Y’all have my utmost respect to keep pushing forward. We decided to sail full time after I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and forced into disability. Our entire mission is to inspire and assist others to keep pushing forward and I’m so happy to see y’all doing just that. You can do it, go live that dream!

Life is risky and ends with death! Plukky you are unique, thank you for this Video. Adam and Beth: I am your age, nearly 57, in usual definitions not disabled, but not wealthy enough to buy a boat, that fits my vanishing strength. Live your dream and please by yourself and not in one of these Tourist Tanks cruise ships. P.S. One handed IMOCA pilots like Seguin and Xu show how it works in hard sport conditions.

Plukky thanks for spending time showing folks with disabilities getting out there! My wife is quadriplegic, and we own a 37' monohull. The biggest issue we have is going from cockpit to cabin, but the solution will present itself in good time! ❤ Maybe when you get this boat up and going you can try to race against Impossible Dream.

"37' monohull." says you might not be in the budget range of a 48 foot cat (yeah me too) but would you consider changing boats? There is a small trailer-able catamaran called a Jarcat (J5 and J6), when you go from cockpit to cabin you enter onto the double bed mattress over the bridge deck, no stairs to worry about. I think there may also be other small catamarans with a similar design, It may not be the solution for you, but worth looking at the idea, if it helps great, if not keep looking.

I suffered 19 broken bones and a stroke after the vehicle I was working from was hit from behind while at a complete stop knocking it over 1/10 of a mile from the point of impact. I have almost 26 years of physical rehabilitation, over 15 years in water therapy which helps so many stroke victims. They have a submersible lift chair to assist people getting in and out of the swimming pool. Severity of strokes vary, things available to help such as floatation belts, neck support, floating noodles, etc. plus they work with you individually or in small groups. Balance is a big issue and rehabilitation in a pool keeps one from getting injured due to falling down. Every case is unique, I would rent a cat or charter for a couple of days to see if you can handle it. The builder could have a small lift crane with a electric winch to assist you. They could even design a beam & winch somewhat like industrial and auto repair shops use.

Gooday, Plukky... I think they seem to be planning to sail on a fairly large, comfortable cat or tri, so it might be a good idea to share the travel with long-term crew, such as a hired captain and some young people who could help with getting on-offboard, into and out of the sea for swims and slinging over to the dingy etc... Perhaps a relative/family member... They have the right attitude and they seem to be willing and able to spend for the necessities. Nice to see you make the effort to help/advise.

To get on and off the dinghy, put a lifting platform in stead of davits. The platform has cradles for the dinghy and goes to below the water surface. This solution also gives you a way to get into and out of the water easily. You really want that! There are crazy expensive heavy versions of this, with hydraulics and all, which you don’t want. Have some arms under the bridge deck with hinges well forwards. Ropes and pulleys to an electric winch. Parallel stays keeps the platform flat. “Sailing Uma” were on a cruising cat in the Caribbean recently that had something like that. The boat building people can make something nice out of this. Perfect aluminium project.

she should take semax, there are studies showing people with strokes heal more and gain more of their abilities back when they take it. it's a neuro peptide that tells the body to repair brain and nerves damage. i can't say she will get fully better but she will probably get more use out of her limbs if she were to take it.

Beth, I wish you the best in seeing the world from a new home on the water. I'm older than you but face some similar issues. They are not disabilities. They are just issues we have to work through. I'm 72 and have neuropathy in my lower legs and feet. What does that mean? I am not as stable as others. Sometimes I have to crawl across the deck when others walk or leap. But I am not quitting. I looked at 2 long distance cruisers yesterday. I still sail on a competitive race boat. But I cannot work foredeck. I told a therapist that I had to make a choice. I can sit on the sofa, watch TV and slowly sink into the cushion like a slug. Or, I can get up and do something. Beth, I know you will get up and do something. Please see the world. It is amazing to be in the Caribbean Islands or Polynesia. And, it's hard to keep from smiling as you experience the varied cultures of the world. GO!

I was run down in 1992 and have brain trauma from that! I don't walk smoothly and being at sea, I would not be so readily on display. I have always (64 years!) been private so solitude would be great for me. As a teenager I and my 2 brothers bought a dinghy so I know how sails work! I would love to buy a sea going yacht, as much as my brother thinks that I am insane. Maybe he is right but I have a different idea of life. You are just as likely to be run down in the street as not so my thought is "If not, then why not. What do I have more to lose! My sanity?"

@@adamgoldberg Adam having cared for my father post strokes then through cancer and experienced the same Cancer then Epstine bar virus and damage to my joints.. after cycling and hiking 🥾 most of my life .. I can tell you its always better to have good access on off and into anything you want to get stuff on and off. Mostly because it might be you that needs it or even a youngster that ends up exceeding their limits and ending up immobile.😬🤭 Besides if you can get a chair aboard you can get a spine board or stretcher or dock/garden trailer on and off without having to hand transfer supplies. Same with access to critical systems and even sail rig choices. Conventional is popular mostly because its popular ...not necessarily because its better or simpler. A lot of the newer motor boats and a few of the sailing cats have rear and side gates and even huge drop downs, that can allow easier loading and offloading of supplies bikes , families with trailers/ buggies or toddlers. Its also just plain safer than walking the plank 😉 I dont know what the tidal range is like in your part of the world but in the UK it can be huge, so unless the jetty is floating you may need to factor that into your ideas .. like using the boom as crane. Ive seen designs that have single or twin telescoping booms that extend out of the cockpit roof others use lift and swing inboard arches .. then there's the powered lifting sun deck boat lift. .. across the transom where you can launch, recover, store a heavy dingy. Not a new idea as James Wharram built a front and rear boat and bathing ramps into a few of his larger designs.. which is one reason one was used for a monumental long distance circumnavigation swim.. and canoo escorts were safely recovered in rough waters. No sides to negotiate. 🧙‍♂️🇬🇧 Protected props and rudders from lines and nets will also help reduce your problems. Leave space on the shafts for line cutters ahead of your props. Theres a pioneering Al cat Elsie a ketch rigged cat.. That was built NZ and designed there by a team in that part of the world but they are also designing for another U tube sailing family from Canada with two toddlers. They have also opted for a forward sailing cockpit and internal helm station for safety, comfort and stability.

Hearing you say "pee-pole" at the end of every sentence just irritates me and now that I can see that it's not involuntary it only makes it worse. @SteinVarjord 4 месяца назад
It depends what “no money” means. If it means not enough for food, it’s hard to prioritise anything else, of course. If it means nothing left after the usual expenses, however, it might be not as locked up as it feels. If you live close enough to some body of water, you can probably find a close to free small sailboat locally. It will not be suitable for long distance and probably need a serious job cleaning and fixing, but it can give you loads of pleasure anytime you want to. Small boats actually give MUCH more sailing joy than bigger ones. You can also join a local sailing club. Avoid the posh ones, where the idiot density is always high. A club for sailing enthusiasts will have evening races etc and many boats will need crew now and then. Put yourself out there. Great fun and lots of learning with only the cost of an annual membership. Watching RU-vid it might seem as the only way to find sailing adventure is going to far away places. I’ve done that a lot, but honestly, there’s usually adventure enough to fill a lifetime very close to home.
