Well, according to that 3 brain theory, the limbic system is the seat of emotion and the reptilian brain is your "oldest" brain and the seat of instinct, your deepest and darkest drives. So it makes sense the limbic system would lament terribly and the reptilian brain would be grave and wistful

There's nothing that isn't interesting about this game

I had a good few-minute-long moment of intellectual enjoyment when I realized that it's intentional you don't know the effects of internalizing a thought until you do it, and after that it takes effort to excise it from yourself if you don't like who the thought turns you into. And how thoughts (beliefs) take up effort that could have gone toward other methods of self-improvement. And so it's possible to engage with belief overmuch and be left unable to overcome challenges in the world compared to a person who devoted their time to skill enrichment. However the skilled-up person lacks perspective and fails to seize options that thoughts/beliefs give him, blocking him off completely from entire regions of life experience. I realized this when starting on the thought about the cryptid. Obviously a wild goose chase, and harmless to pursue in dialogues and running around, but suddenly you're faced with the opportunity cost of spending your time obsessing over ridiculous beliefs. Hell of a game.

I believe that's his stage voice. The "rockstar" persona. After all, you're rolling for Drama when you make this skill check. I think that the skill check is just Harry attempting to sing without letting his real emotions fully display out there on the stage. You succeed in Drama? You keep it inside and let a little out for the audience, but keep yourself together. You fail in Drama? It's him up on the stage, with nothing between him and the audience. And Kim, knowing Harry, still appreciates it. Because it wasn't *bad*, it was just *too much*. My opinion anyways. EDIT: After all, they're both the same voice actor.

I wish HDB was voiced for the whole game. That gravelly voice would really suit him, occasionally bursting into emotion when other skills come into play.

I see it more symbolic. He is singing from his very primal essence. The oldest thing there is in his mind, the deepest part. From what some might call his soul. Like a wise old sage. On a failed check, all soul is removed. Its just his body creaking. The Limbic System takes over. Emotion, with no restraint. But also no meaning. Too much, too raw. Like a toddler.

@@parentaladvisory113 The skill voices seem to be more of a dissociated aspect of Harry’s psyche; as in they appear by certain context prompts rather than his conscious volition. It’s also possible his drunk bender he went on the night before the investigation induced a psychotic break that manifested in the voices. It’s certainly not normal person thoughts Harry has, there’s a degree of room for speculation on the reasoning behind it all.

@@thedingleberrybush6076 They are sort of normal. I have conversations with myself in a similar way, but Harrier's thoughts are disjointed into psychological aspects of himself. It's actually very interesting because (even if you don't have high logic trait) it suggests more analytical breakdown of himself. He's separating his inner dialogue into distinctions because the whole is dysfunctional. The only way he can function, cope with things so to speak, is to break it down. The conversation with Dolores hints at this when she comments on one of your highest skill, for example encyclopedia "You only communicated in interesting trivia" or something like that.

It also makes sense that Harry breaks his ‘skills’ down the same way a DnD character has differing interactions that are dependent on the stats and class they utilize. Harry has all aspects of the skills as part of his core but since he can’t make use of them all at once due to his state at the beginning, we have to pick and choose the broken pieces of who he was; like trying to glue a glass vase back together. A fascinating and organic way to weave DnD mechanics naturally into a story.

@@thedingleberrybush6076 I also think part of it, beyond the pale influence or potentially modulated by it, is amphetamine overuse/incorrect medical dosage/abuse. using alot too much too quickly or pushing it to focus over a prolonged period produces an experience that is so similar to the one in game i had to look into look into the writers interviews out of curiosity (its implied heavily in a couple i found) Its a thing that i think gets overlooked as a portion of the main character simply because its not as common an experience as say, alcohol abuse, or other mental illness, but if youve been there its jarring how well the game simulates it, it makes this state of being simultaneously, analytical, emotionally reactive, deeply empathetic, but also lost in your internal monolog. Youll end up at the same time haveing 2 or 3 very extreme emotions and potential reactions, but because the mental fixation with analysis and organization that tends to kick in you end up in this wierd place where you feel like your lost in your head and "picking options" with very basic interactions, but all of them feel *EXTREAMLY IMPORTANT* Something as simple as paying a cashier can feel perilous because you can end up with one thought that has you worried that if you come off rude they will have a bad day, then get depressed, and then end up on a downward spiral and it will be all your fault because you forgot to thank them on the way out, one thought thats you going "Dude, your being unreasonable, relax" another going "Hes probably haveing the same thoughts" and another saying "no matter what you do it will be perfect/nothing matters who cares" And your day consists of continually picking between these options to come across as the person your trying to be. This, along with other comments by characters about how he "Goes through everything like a check list" and "Chases every lead down until no questions are unanswered" lead me to think this is very intentionally written in as an aspect of his character beyond the simple electrochemistry references

I failed the legendary electrochemistry check at the end of the game. 92%. Damnit.

Disco Elysium is awesome because you almost never feel the need to reload a failed roll.... And the times you do, it feels like being unable to live with your own actions if you do.

I did the exact same thing. The mental image of a sad, alcoholic man stripping everything off to change into a completely different outfit, belting his lungs out, and absolutely and utterly falling flat has been one of my favorite parts of this game.

Old comment but recently played this fantastic game, yeah the drums and guitar feel very Badalamenti-ish

The failed singing is still a success in a way. Everyone is awkwardly staring, of course, but in this one Harry really opens up and tears himself apart at seams for the performance. Only Kim appreciates it, but here Harry is being the most honest in his entire life. Remember that Drama is a skill that answers for both, performances *and lies*.

It's supposed to sound more sincere. The skill you use to get the success is Drama, the skill you use to lie.

That's the point. You can't go wrong with what Reptilian Brain did, but what the limbic system tried was _WAY_ too ambitious.

If you search for a certain song called "The Smallest Church in Sussex" you won't find exactly that, but something good on its own.

If there’s a sequel with him as the protagonist still, I’m probably gonna have him implode again and lose all the self improvement he made over the course of the game. Feels appropriate.

@@Necroskull388 the creator's of the game said they'd want the sequel protagonist to he a pregnant lady because they want to see what kind of exploration that would have. It makes sense. The first game is about a broken minded Harry. The second game might be a more physically challenge for a pregnant lady. Especially since the creator's also said they want to add more "fights" and "action" in the sequel.
