Julie, We took our portrait of Edward Montagu to the National Portrait Gallery a few years ago on one of their open days. It was wrapped up in brown paper and string, and the guy said. " who have you got there? "Edward Montagu, Earl of Sandwich" "Oh we have several of him in the Collection I will go and get the photos"(black & white). When he got back, we had unwrapped it and it looked at it and said, "Oh Dear!", " Why, Is it not him?" "Oh yes it is definitely him, but its a better portrait than all of ours!" He had six different photographic portraits in his hand. Look at that order of the garter, its ridiculously large, and painted over a portrait of him as a Cromwell supporter!"

Hi Julie! Love the videos/live chats you all have been creating! In this video my interest was especially peaked by the house records. I have done extensive digitizing of my family's comparative meager records and photos. Have you all thought of digitizing those records yourselves? Although I was able to use my printer/scanner, that would not be completely possible with all of your family's records, especially those in bound volumes. However, with the proper lighting and wise use of a smartphone you could easily digitize every page of your documents and the family's portrait collection. What an amazing job that would be! If only I could lend a hand! But, alas, I am in the US. Well done, you and your husband's family, in bringing the family's history to light and allowing virtual visitors to Mapperton! Continued best of luck to you and yours!

Such a wonderful presentation. I just watched this after viewing your latest live broadcast. It’s great! I noticed at the end you mention it was National Sandwich week in Great Britain. Wouldn’t it be wonderful (once the world reopens) for the Earl of Sandwich to host a Sandwich festival yearly in honor of it? You could invite the best sandwich chefs and officianados from all over Great Britain for tastings and a yearly competition. Best Sandwich in Great Britain! I’d definitely get a kick out of attending something like that. Keep up the great work, I just love your show. I hope you plan an episode at Mapperton! Stay well.

I’m so happy that I found your channels! Your family is lovely, and very interesting . The discovery of family history and treasures have always interested me. One of my ancestral families lived in Blandford . The Ryves family. The estate was sold to pay gambling debts. If I get to return to England one day, maybe I will visit the estate. I read that it is a wedding venue named The Came. It was named Ranston a few hundred years ago.

When reading the ice cream recipe, you have, understandably, read "ye" when this is actually the word "the." What you think is a "y" is called a thorn and stands for the "th" sound. Perhaps this will make more sense when you read further in the journals.

The conversion in pounds for the diamonds that cost 405 pounds, is close to 85,000 pounds today.
@stephanieh.6144
@stephanieh.6144 4 года назад
It would actually be quite a bit more. Statista.com has a conversion value of 236.43 for 1666, so that would be 95,754.15 GBP today. But the inflation of the materials (gold and diamonds) would not have the same inflation as the standalone currency. So it would be well into 6 figures, at a minimum, and likely more depending on the gem ratings, not to mention the provenance. It would be fascinating to get a more accurate estimate from a jeweler that specializes in this type of appraisal - and of course, to actually find the piece. ;)
@fernandoferdinand4866
@fernandoferdinand4866 3 года назад
Bc of the fact that this object is made of high commodities as gold and diamonds it would have more value and also being owned by members of the British monarchy. It would fetch a price in the single digit millions between 3-5 millions worth in 2021.

Small correction Julie. Charles II did not come back to become king, the minute his father dies, he becomes king, automatically, "the King is dead! "Long live the (next) KING!" The coronation confirms that the Church of England recognises him as King, and crowns him, as a Christian C of E Monarch! Remember Edward VIII was King, but abdicated to marry his divorced American, Wallis Simpson.

I checked several conversion websites and the resulting values for the jewel were all over the place and too low in my very humble opinion. The highest value was $107,249.92 from Edward Nye, English Department, University of Wyoming. This would be dollars, not pounds. This does not take into account the intrinsic antique value or the provenance, both of which would make the jewel considerably more valuable. At least it seems that way to me!

Just like the Earl of Cavendish they were made Duke's because the seven asked William III and Mary to come over and take over the monarchy. Think about THAT one. They wanted James out he had visions of a Louis XIV style monarchy and it was basically a no Catholic zone. General Monck brought Charles or asked if he would come back. That's what I mean you cannot make up this incredible history. Thanks everyone!

Every other person that I have seen has always worn white cotton gloves before handling such historical documents because of concerns about the oils that are naturally present on our fingertips and hands damaging the fragile pages when touching them barehanded. Just wondering.

Fantastic job again, you are all very entertaining and likeable, you could try patreon something along those lines, have a look at the French chateau you tubers, not that you should be like them, as it is totally different kettle of fish so to speak, but you can see what they do, how they manage to make quite a bit of money that helps towards roofs and renovating everything, people do love to see work and renovations the nitty gritty so to speak. This is very much appreciated, to see such history and hear the knowledge coming forth. I think a cup of tea and and sandwich of course, with the knowledge and history flowing, between you all, would be wonderful too. Because I spite of all the serious history, people wanted to know, what sandwich and what icecream was your father in laws favourite 🤷‍♀️ stay safe.
