How can you walk through the centre to avoid the crowds, avoid having to take out an umbrella when it rains, and still enjoy the extraordinary architecture? Take advantage of Prague's arcades, which hold many surprises!
In this episode of our Live Prague series, we'll show you how to get from the National Museum to Burnt Street on Národní třída.
The Phoenix Passage
From the horse we turn into Krakovská Street, where the Phoenix arcade is located. The architect behind it is Josef Gočár, author of such gems as the House of the Black Mother of God. However, this is not the only thing that makes Fénix unique - you will find here, for example, a clock on the ceiling or an erotic mosaic by Rudolf Kremlička.
Merkur Passage
You know it from the movie Bony and Peace. And although it may not be as representative as other Prague passages, it hides a unique feature - the medieval portal of the U Hřebeckých house, which dates back to 1381.
Lucerna Passage
This Art Nouveau gem, built by the grandfather of President Václav Havel, is interesting in itself, especially for its stunning decoration. What you won't miss is the sculpture by David Černý representing St. Wenceslas sitting on the belly of a dead horse.
Moreover, the Lantern is a kind of crossroads of passages - if you would like to return to Wenceslas Square, use the Rokoko passage, which will transport you to the world of refinement from the beginning of the 20th century. But we will go the other way.
Palace of the Novaks
The most extensive passage in Prague resembles streets with squares where one likes to get lost. By the way, the palace was built to accommodate as many shops and cafes as possible, making it practically the forerunner of today's shopping centres...
Světozor Passage
The next passage we will pass on our way is the Světozor. Most people associate it mainly with the cinema, the legendary patisserie or the canteen. The arcade took its present form in 1947. What you should definitely not miss is the advertising stained glass by František Hudeček.
Passage Alfa
Don't miss the magnificent glass hall in this arcade. The only blemish on the beauty of this Prague passage is its dilapidated state. From here we will go to the Franciscan Garden, at the end of which is the Teta arcade, which will take us to Jungmannova Street.
Škoda Palace
In the building that houses the municipality, there is another passage. It has recently been renovated, but one original thing has been preserved - the unique paternoster lifts. Also worth a visit is the locally renowned bistro, where students of the Vyšehrad vocational school work.
From the arcade you can go behind Quadrio, through which it is only a few steps to the destination, i.e. Spálená Street.
How did you like the route through the arcade? And do you have any other favourite passages in Prague that you shouldn't miss? Let us know in the comments!
