Sam Witwer voice of Darth Maul in 'Star Wars: Rebels' discusses 'Twin Suns'. Video goes in and out because of phone calls.... literally the worse time I have ever gotten calls lol
I get a bittersweet feeling when I see this video. I wasn’t 100% happy with my photo op cause my expression. But getting this video and getting to talk to him about Star Wars and Being Human made up for it. I’m happy I got to meet such a cool actor.
He could've also added the part where Obi Wan didn't even ignite his saber until Maul mentioned (who we know to be) Luke. Obi Wan was completely contempt to settle their conflict without violence, but as soon as Maul knew about Luke, Obi Wan couldn't allow him to leave with that knowledge. If you watch the episode, you can see it in Obi's eyes. He's calm, then when Maul knows he's protecting "something", Obi's like, "Okay Maul you better stop now..." with his eyes, then Maul says, "No, someone." And Obi knows he HAS to kill Maul.
Grand Admiral Thrawn I interpreted this scene the same way. Obi Wan was very content to avoid this fight forever. He wasn't going around searching the galaxy for Maul all these years looking for revenge for Qui Gon and Satine. Up until the last possible moment, where he knew he had to kill Maul to protect Luke, he would have been content to simply convince Maul to leave, and perhaps even try to turn Maul to the Light Side. This is Obi Wan, or should I say Old Ben, at his peak Light Side Master level here. He has "risen above" the wars, the fighting of his past life. He has one duty now, to protect and guide Luke until he's old enough to fulfill his destiny, and nothing else matters to him. You imagine him for decades in the desert, meditating, watching, training, preparing himself for that final sacrifice he makes in A New Hope. He watches the rise of the Empire with disinterest. He watches the gangsters and smugglers on the planet with disinterest. He has a singular focus and he is utterly devoted to it, and he has no room within himself for any thought of Maul at all. Before, during, and after this fight, I felt like Obi Wan had a sort of melancholy about him. He pitied Maul. He felt no anger toward him. He had long-forgiven Maul for the people Obi Wan loved that Maul took away, and was sad that he had to put Maul down. There was no joy, no sense of justice, here. It had to be done, but Obi Wan did everything he could to be merciful, to give Maul some level of peace as he died. He outclassed Maul in every respect, mentally, physically, metaphysically, and did not drag the fight out unnecessarily. He defeated him as quickly as he possibly could, and ensured the blow would not cause Maul to suffer long. When Maul demonstrated at the end, that he'd learned nothing, and was still so focused on revenge, Obi Wan closed his eyes and felt so very sad for Maul. I believe this scene was the greatest one in all of Star Wars, honestly. It was perfection. Every movement, every word, was rife with deep, layered significance, and it represented in a microcosm the sort of wisdom Yoda imparted when training Luke. Wars not make one great. In the end, Obi Wan's undeniable mastery with a lightsaber did not make him great. His sense of duty, his compassion, his ability to forgive someone who had wronged him, those are the qualities that made him great.
Sam just keeps on earning respect points! Loved his portrayal of Maul and his knowledge of Star Wars lore and storytelling! Thank you soooo much for recording this, man!!
Star Wars Rules no problem! Glad I could share this moment with everyone. Celebration was one of my biggest highlights of this year 🤓 I'm glad I got something cool recorded lol It was unexpected
That's SO cool! This proves that Rebels even though is softer and more child friendly than Clone Wars it still hasn't lost it's passion for Star Wars and the writing is a solid as ever..
So many things he explained that I never picked up on. The Ben stance between young obi and qui gon, the cradling of Maul, the explaination of the mindset of the two of them (telling the story the two were telling in the stare down). Makes me love this moment even more.
Parallelism. Obi-Wan meeting Ezra in the desert fighting an old foe Maul, a precursor to Luke and Darth Vader. All the more we should push for Obi-Wan spinoff ! Obi wan played by Ewan McGregor but voice dubbed by Stephen Stanton. 🙌
Its great when you realize all the philosophical connections in star wars and the reasoning behind them. It makes things so much better and elevates the show for me
One of the few excellent moments in Rebels to be honest, I haven’t enjoyed the show much at all. This explanation does the characters justice and shows how wel it was done. I was very impr seed with the scene myself when I first saw it, noticing how Obi-Wan quite literally fully evolved into Ben Kenobi at that moment.
tebjosh13 No Problem! It was really awesome. I thought nothing could top this but I ran into Dave Filoni, Warwick Davis, & Andi from the Star Wars Show after this! It was an EPIC conclusion to Celebration.
I never noticed Obi Wan’s transition from Obi Wan to Ben in that scene, from his more aggressive stance to his more defensive one, showing that he almost instinctively got ready for this big showdown and realized that’s not how it should be. That’s fucking dope
@@seanmansfield4853 You'd be surprised how many blockbusters were produced by her, she knows the business and that's a fact regardless of personal bias
Thank you for sharing this! I know it was years ago, but I just found this video and enjoyed it very much! Sam is such a great Star Wars fan, and did a terrific job acting Darth Maul!
Glad to hear that! I actually ran into him at the Chicago Celebration, while it was closing.. Got a couple good pictures with him. Been a fan from Starkiller, Aiden, Maul, Deacon, etc etc etc Cool dude, and interesting career choices. I’m very proud of how many people I could share this with. The way he described that arc, was just beautiful and it really resonated with me at the time. Pretty epic
Huh, I thought that TFU was his first work for Star Wars. A while ago I was looking a voice cast for The Clone Wars and recognized him from his role as Starkiller just because he looked like him. He's also my favorite voice actor for Maul and Palpatine.
To be more accurate, Starkiller looks like Sam Witwer. Someone involved with the creation of The Force Unleashed noticed the resemblance, and asked him to do the voice.
Sam Witwer really is the ultimate Star Wars fan and he's living the dream of being mentored by Dave Filoni and starring in Star Wars shows and games. I could listen to this guy geek out for hours. He's also into DC and (I think) Marvel, so that's a bonus.
Charlie Hopkins No problem man, one of my favorite moments from Celebration. Lot more people have been watching this after Solo 🤔😏 I got tickets to next years Celebration, I hope I can meet this awesome dude again.
Really cool explanation. I always thought Maul kind of wanted to die at that moment because his life was pretty miserable. Maybe subconsciously he did which is why he messed up and did the same move?
Holy crap…Sam knows every last possible nuance of his Twin Suns scene backwards and forwards and from all possible perspectives. Makes me think his t-shirt should read “All This And Brains Too”
Sam is one of those people like Filoni and Favreau who I feel has this deep understanding of Star Wars that's vital to the future of the franchise. Even though Maul's story has come to an end I hope there are still ways for Sam to continue being a part of the universe.
As an added bonus that fight should also be compared to this from 7 Samurai. Same idea, assess yourself and your opponent, change your initial stance and make the right decision. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GF5U83UIX1o.html With some differences, the Darth Maul and Obi duel was great to be heard from Sam and his feelings on it.
@@tonystank3091 They don't hate Star Wars, Alec thought it was weird, Harrison is putting a price on himself, he just pretends to hate the franchise, Natalie just treated the prequels as a job that would give her a boost in her career, but no more. It doesn't matter, the main thing is that they played their roles well (except for Natalie, although I can only blame her for the Phantom menace), without huge involvement like Hayden Christensen, Liam Neeson or Samuel Jackson.
@@denchik5798 So it's not that they *hated* it, it's that they didn't really *care* about it. Meanwhile, there's Sam Witwer here who's something of a hardcore fan himself.
Maul lost/died because he never changed, never grew, never adapted...he was an incomplete person dragging himself along in the same rut of Master/Dominant vs Apprentice/Subservient because he knew nothing else...
Maul is most likely depressed (let's face it, who wouldn't be), but he came here trying to end a feud and kill his nemesis, not to get himself killed even though that would ultimately be what happened.
@@charles-olivierdenis6633 He came to kill Obi wan, but I am not sure he really expected to survive. I highly doubt he put any thought into his plans afterwards.
@@matthewc3135 Exactly what I was thinking! I mean killng Obi Wan is the only thing he has left, but I think he knows it won't leave him satisfied. He just wants to die.
I know I'm very late, but allow me to perhaps solve that problem. Maul knew of the Prophecy of the Chosen One, but not of Anakin, the said prophetic child. On his part, Kenobi basically lost hope in Skywalker, and hopes that Luke might have actually been the One instead of his father (even though we see it doesn't play out exactly like that in Return of the Jedi.) At that point in time, neither knew or believed that Anakin was (still) the Chosen One, but Ben believed it was Luke, and Maul, in his final moments, came to the same conclusion.
