We have been great on this channel looking forward and documenting the present, but today I wanted to take the opportunity to do a bit of a reset ... and take a look back at my bike history.
This is a trip not only through my bikes, but in many ways my bike journey, hopefully it is something you might relate to.
There are some great bike in this list (and some that I am not so proud of), but this is less about the material good and more about the experience of these pieces of equipment.

Every cyclist’s bike history is a pretty good reflection of their personality, and their ‘mature development’ or lack of, in their cycling life/addiction. Nice set you’ve gone through Chris! 👍😊 I’ve had many bikes over my 30 odd year cycling adventure! I’ve pretty much come full circle too! My first real excellent ‘racer’ was a Tommasini super prestige. My goodness that was beautiful even if SLX steel was far too much over kill for a 52kg watts wimp like me. I now have 2 Tommasini, one steel one carbon, both Campagnolo, both use rim brakes and tubs and both make me just drool with lust and smile with every ride.

When I properly got into cycling and started racing I loved the Ridley Noah’s that you guys were on. About 18 months ago bought an old stock SL rim frame, complete with the funky forks just like you guys had! Maybe because I haven’t ridden anything newer to compare it against, but I love it. Keep up the awesome content Chris!

My road bike journey. I’m a tinkerer,I love mechanical stuff and bikes are no exception. 2008/9 There was the beginnings of what has become a huge Fixie/single speed scene in my area. I quickly realized that a truly high quality bike was expensive and I would have to build something to get what I wanted for what I could afford. A lovely but neglected 58CM Schwinn World Voyager from a Craigslist Ad was the beginning of what became a very fun Single speed bike that taught me a lot and shaped what I think you need in a bike. 2011 saw me enter the traditional geared road cycling space, I was given the choice of the lowest spec Allez for $599.99 or a very nice used Alloy Pinarello Angliru with 9 speed Campagnolo Veloce for $550,i Still have that pinarello and still love it. Eventually the pinarello was wearing 11 speed super record,Bora 50 wheels carbon everything but I knew that day was fast approaching that I would finally buy a new bike. All signs were pointing to a used Caad10 or breaking down and buying a Caad12 One fateful Saturday in 2019 I went on another average Early morning group ride and saw it- the most beautiful bike I’ve ever seen in person. I had to know more about it,I had to own one- and this will strike everyone as very odd 2016 Diamond back podium Equipe. The graphics are a bit Garish,it only clears 25C tires but I don’t want to ride anything else. 11S super record,Bora 45WTO wheelset all the carbon trimmings every time I see it I want to go for a bike ride and that’s what it’s all about.

I was late turning to cycling and my first proper bike was a Giant TCR Advanced with a mechanical rim brake 105 / Ultegra mix which was a great introduction but the bug had bitten and I kept looking at Bianchi! In 2020 I bought a Specialissima, I just loved the history, the look (gloss celeste paint!) and the idea of a lightweight climbing bike, even though I'm not so lightweight myself. I've that Specialissima kitted out with Di2, Campy WTO rims and of course it's rim brake which I believe are more than good enough for my sportive cycling. God I love this bike, the whole package just feels so fast and immediate power transfer. The TCR doesn't have the same comfort or sense of ease as the Specialissima but it's a great bike in it's own right, I guess the price differential between the two explains some of the differences. I use my TCR for wet summer rides (I live in Ireland) and dry winter ones. For wet winter & indoor I've a an alloy Felt bike which is almost disposable, it just does those crappy rides when I don't want to destroy the other two. I also potter around on a Giant Talon MTB which I bought to accompany my son on some off-road rides but that's been a waste (he's given up)! I think I've all the bikes I need but there's just something attracting me to the Colnago C68, I wont be buying one or I'd be divorced! I'm not attracted to the aero bikes at all, for me the benefit is not there as I dont average over 40kph where they make most difference.

Great video Chris. Down the Rabbit Hole I started out on an Aluminium Avanti 9 speed shimano ultegra. I hated the way the gear and brake cables ballooned out of the handlebars. The Avanti broke in a crash.. I gave the ultegra away and bought 10 speed Campagnolo Chorus second hand. I put that on a Specialized Tarmac Pro. This bike was a rocket and I became a Campagnolo convert. Eventually I went down the rabbit hole after watching Thomas Voeckler in the yellow jersey. I then bought a Colnago C59 Italia and from there I've never been tempted by the rabbit hole except for a Focus Mares disk braked Sram Rival cyclocross bike and a mountain bike (Merida aluminium one by with Sram) and oh yeah a Reynolds 531 Steel Frame from the 1980s which has a steel fork and which weighs 8 kilos with Record 11 speed. Of course, that's my winter bike....with aluminium rims when the rain is in the hills. The Colnago is quite frankly a dream to ride in all weather. Carlo at Quantum Cycles in Perth did a superb job repainting it. It has super record rim brakes with Record 11 speed componentry and rim brake campagnol bora wheels. There's nothing aero about it. But it does give me the feeling you've spoken about. It will be a shame when it wears out or breaks if that happens.

I bought a second-hand titanium-carbon Colnago CT1 with Campa Super Record about ten years ago, frame probably too small, drop surely too much for me, but I rode it as much as I could. Last autumn got a Canyon Grizl gravel bike with good fitting frame to have the one bike to rule them all. Rode it for a year, loved it, then got the itch to try a proper road bike again. Fiddled with the set up of the Colnago, to get it fit better (it's almost vintage and a beautiful bike, so didn't want to sell it). After the tank-like Grizl, it feels like a completely different beast, it just wants to go fast, you feel bad if you are not pushing it. I'm quite excited to ride both of them.

I actually found your channel, Chris, after I bought my Bianchi XR1. I got it in a matte finish and man it looked so badass, but your comments on the Specialissima paint is spot on. What a colossal PITA to keep clean. I'm pretty anal retentive about a clean bike but this was insanely challenging... so much so that after season 1, I stripped the parts and sent it away for a glossy clear coat spray. VIVE LA DIFFERENCE! Stilling riding that bike in anger with a -20 stem and 44 bars (since I'm 198cm tall). I still have my Pegoretti-custom-built-for-me Pinarello. Had it since 1993, full Campy Record. I ride it once or twice a year and the last time I rode it I did a PR on a climb we call The Beast, which is shocking on a heavy steel bike with a 53 up front and an 8-speed straight block in back. Devels look interesting for sure. BTW those NERO bianchi era jerseys are badass... wish i coulda grabbed one. Cheers.

Chris, I resonated with your comment about having the only bike of it's kind. I modify every bike I own to work for me. It is through the process of modifying and working on all parts of the bike that I build a connection with the bike. It is the personal modifications/upgrades/decorations that make me love "my" bike. I have no connection with a brand new off-the-shelf bike. I just built a bike from the best individual components for me from all over the world and it is truly mine and I truly understand it. Learnt a lot by doing everything myself 😀

Hi there Chris. I didn't have a lot of bikes comparing with you lol. But I have been riding since '94. I had the privilege to represent my country 2x ( Curaçao). Bu I started with a Simple bicycle which wasn't that popular or known as a race bike. Rodmars It was my older brother's and I build it little by little and turned it into a race bike. It was a steel frame. After that I bought a more race orientated used bike. A Dutch brand, named Batavus model Criterium. It was also a steel one but Reynolds tubing. I build it with Shimano RSX (7 sp) that time. STI. I got hit on my bike (Batavus) by a car. I stopped cycling. In 2002 I started again and bought the Eddy Merckx Alu Sprint. It came with full Veloce groupset. Which after one year I swapped it with full Ultegra 6600 that time. 9 sp. Race with it but got hit again by a car in 2006 just after we finished with our last preparation ride for a race abroad. I didn't stop this time. I was looking for another bycicle that that and I ordered a Bianchi 928L full carbon with DA 6700 and Ksyrium SL 100 anniversary. Lately I replaced the 7800 shifter and derailleurs with 6700 and added two sets of Easton Circuit training wheels and DA C50 race wheels. Still riding and racing the Bianchi 928L. Planning to go for an aero frame bike. Not knowing which one yet. Thanks for sharing

My background is XC MTB racing in the 90's but I'll leave the MTB's out of my story. Because of my background I tend to lean towards the American brands in road bikes and also they were more affordable. So in the mid to late 90's I bought a polished aluminum GT road bike to supplement my training, 105 components, aluminum fork, 23mm tires, got to know a few local riders on group rides and started to race road races, Gran Fondos, criteriums, hill climbs, then had to move city's for about 4 years and had to stop racing. On my return in 2002 I pulled the GT out of the shed and discovered it had a crack in the head tube, got a warranty and got a brand new GT ZR3.0 with carbon forks. I was doing other sports so not riding until about 2012 when I started to do short rides to rehab a hip injury. One evening I went to a local club criterium and rode around at the back of D grade (they were mostly kids so I was embarrassed to get involved in racing with them lol) but I won a spot prize to a local Gran Fondo, did that and really enjoyed it so started to look for other events to enter and decided to upgrade my bike. The GT has had several upgrades in components since (mostly Ultegra 10 and 11 speed) and done many races but is now a single speed and gets used every week, I got the rear brake bridge raised so I could run 28mm tires for our rough chip roads here in NZ. About 2014 I bought a Scott CR1 Pro which I loved for it's climbing and light weight, used if for racing but it could only fit 25mm tires so I moved it on. Next was a 2017 Cannondale Synapse which I raced, I still have it and use it every week, 11 speed Ultegra (all my bikes are mechanical). I could fit 30mm tires on this and would use it on gravel as well, got the job done but not ideal so bought a gravel bike. Which was a Trek Checkpoint, I was quite good at gravel/mixed terrain races and did and still do some huge rides on this bike. Beginning of last year I bought a Giant TCR disc, very nice bike but I've done less than 1000kms on it so far, don't think I've used it all this year and I used it mainly for sprint workouts but as I've scaled back my racing on the road somewhat I'm struggling to find a use for it now. Even though it's only slightly heavier (3x gels) than my Cannondale I still prefer the Cannondale for long road rides under 200kms. Really long road rides over 200kms are my thing now and mostly the Trek Checkpoint get's used with it's ability to carry more water and food, it is my heaviest bike but such a good bike for this kind of thing. Including MTB's I currently have 6 bikes that get used these days. Not looking at anything else, happy with what I have.

Really interesting video, loved it! I actually bought a Bianchi XR3 rim brake version because of your recommendation and absolutely love it! I’d already had three Bianchis ( an alu/carbon 1885, carbon infinito and alloy track bike Super Pista) and still have two of them (I sold the Infinito). My first real bike was my mother’s old 531c, fixed wheel Claud Butler. I did my paper round on it haha!

Brought up in the steel era, my first good bike was from Lennie Rogers cycles. Was Lauries race bike. It was 2 inches too big for me. I knew nothing then. It had a stronglite triple on it 54 45 38 and a 13 to 18 block. His rationale was it was easier to move up and down chainrings than the gears. No indexing then it was all done on feel. From there I moved thru many steel frames made by Jim Bundy, Paul Blom etc. Eventually landing on ordering a Bob Jackson from the iconic british frame builder. Had a soft spot for them for many years. 1973 it was. I still have it and still ride it. Campagnolo record group set. Superbe machine. Had a few fill in bikes for a while mainly for training on. As you did. Then in 1983 I placed an order for another Bob Jackson 531c tubing, I put Campagnolo Super record on it. What a machine comfort and performance and I still ride it almost exclusivley now. Now has Superbe pro on it mainly. I have a steel Cinelli super corsa which inherited the Super record group, was working for Hanley tradng at the time and lusted after the frame. He gave it to me and I still ride that as well another 1983 vintage I rode that bike over all those iconic mountain passes in Europe, much to the amazment of people on their Newly minted Carbon frames. There was a ex Belgian pro on the tour Eric van Lanker.And he said now thats a bike... During that time at Hanley Trading a Carbon Frame with alloy kugs turned up I forget its brand but was Japanese. Built that up with Superbe Pro to test out. Rocketship first sub 10kg bike I had ever ridden. Like wow... I gave it back to him saying I cannot justify riding around on this. Little was I to know on the revolution coming. So continued with my steel 1983 Bob Jackson. Up until about 5 yrs ago when once again my affair with British frames led me to Ribble. A Daedachi tube frame branded for Ribble but lookjed very much like the Casati of the same year. Around 2014 that was. Still have that bike and it is a go to for long rides, Campagnolo Chorus with a Compact 50 34 and a 12 to 32 11speed. I am getting old now at 72 and not as strong, can still climb a bit being 65kg. Have a mad plan to ride Three Peaks next year as a swan song. The Ribble will be my steed. The legs well they are work in progress, not kidding myself here its a big ride. But I think I can do it in 12hours. We shall see, love your channel keep it up. Think you still owe me a T shirt for a route I sent you on rides we do. Dont think you were too keen. Anyhow rant over. Might see you on the road.

I am happy to see that apparently I was not the only one who were cursed with this damned bike buying syndrome, where I keep looking for the next best, new, shiny thing. For me it was kind of like an addiction. It was shocking and downright scary. As a musician I experienced the GAS, (gear acquisition syndrome) where musicians do the same as cyclists and they always want to buy a new guitar, bass, etc. However it wasn't nearly as intense as it was with bikes. I could go for years with a new guitar and did not particularly felt the need to get a new one, or sell the old one etc. Plus guitars are not as expensive as bikes - I mean they can be, but generally speaking. For bikes... I had like 15 bikes in 2-3 years, some of these were very expensive, around 3000-5000 EUR The main problem I had that I was never really satisfied with them. I bought bigger frames that didn't fit my body, convincing myself I will make it work with a smaller stem, different setup etc. It almost worked, but at the end still felt very uncomfortable on the long run. (KTM Revelator Lisse - wicked fast bike thou, very good looking and that SRAM Red AXS set...) Had a great bike, but I hated how the cables were not fully integrated - Scott Foil RC etc. Also, most of my bikes were used ones and I often run into problems like frame delamination, weak breaks, spotty shifts, weird noises etc. Now I bought a brand new 2023 Merida Reacto 6000, added a set of DT ARC 1400 wheels plus a Vision 4D ACR handlebar and never looked back. I really hope this nightmare of spending money I do not have, on bikes that I don't really need is actually gone. I know my bike buying lunacy was messed up, but it felt good to confess. :)

@@ChrisMillerCycling As much as I LOVE the aesthetics (and performance/low CDA) of modern day, crunchy carbon composite, disc brake aero road bikes, I REFUSE to go into debt for the rest of my life (67 now, on that dreaded 'fixed income' BS, with almost no 'disposable income' at all) in order to own one. That fully integrated, hidden everything, track bike with gears and brakes look is addictive, even if they are beyond impossible to work on. But again, cannot pay MORE for a bike than I did for a decently nice, NEW car in '16. So, I will stick with my vintage 20 year old Merlin Road titanium, skinny tubes, parallel top tube, tiny 1" steerer head tube, and very slightly curved (instead of the dead straight forks of today) Reynolds Ouzo Pro fork, and all. 😉 It does have a circa 2001 Campy Record 10 gruppo on it, with their ~2010 compact Ultra Torque Carbon Record cranks added later, and yes, this 'works' and shifts JUST FINE for me, with no problems whatsoever, or need for charging or carrying spare batteries on every ride. (I laugh when all of the U.S. 'Shimano ONLY snobs' scoff and tell me that ALL Campy is pure sh**, and that even current 105 has to perform at least 100 times better. 🤣) I even bought another set of alloy rim brake wheels (Fulcrum Racing 4s) for it before the manufacturers' current disc brake ONLY, bikes AND 2 mile wide wheels trend FORCE those to become totally extinct as well. I am on the lookout for any NARROW width, 45-50mm deep section carbon with an ALLOY rim braking surface wheels (like those FFs you had on the Cervelo in the vid), but these are becoming impossible to find nowadays. (I LOVE the sound they make, especially when shod with a high TPI cotton cased, quality clincher and latex inner tubes!)

This one is really GOOD! Actually I believe you'll be more than fine on any of those bikes, even the worst bikes -- if you separate the wheel and tyres, the geometry and resulting riding position, you'll find it might not be the bike/frame that was to be blamed. I always thought bikes are just like lady's handbags. What's the justification for the $2000 handbag ??? Or that $1000 dress ??? Compared with these I find the $5000 bike an absolutely bargain. I actually laughed when I watched the sections you mentioned you feel so much confidence when riding some specific bikes. It's the exact same language when our lady friends got some new clothes and handbags... We have all been there and the pysco thing is real. I think that's just what bike industry really is but we just don't want to admit. What I hate is the industry trying (and they succeed) to selling the idea that it's the $10000 bikes being the difference/barrier between you and pro. It's especially true in non-cyclists and beginner cyclists. Before owing a power meter, one can never know the truth. This is largely amplified through the bike shops especially in where I live. You are rich, you can afford the $10000 trek with a hole, you are a pro. You are poor, you can only afford that aluminum emonda, no wonder you are a noob. That's what they whole industry try to sell. And how the bike shop want you to feel when you walk into that shop. "You talk about the proper riding??? Nah you have to get some proper kit to starting out, or you'll forever be a noob". From a business point of view that's how you sell something, but it's just wrong/ill when you know the truth.

I'll never sell my SL4 Tarmac. I bought it with some student loan and months of savings working at Dominoes Pizza. That bike brought me 2 road race wins, multiple podiums, tens of thousands of racing miles and still kicks ass today. I had a first gen. Venge which the SL4 replaced because that frame had a terrible BB alignment issue, although I did take my first road race win on it after a 20 mile solo breakaway. I was sponsored by a shop team that gave me possibly one of the worst bikes I've ever ridden - Bottecchia 8Avio, you could only fit the smoothest 22mm tyres on it and the external cables was a mess. The team got a new issue Bottecchia T1 Tormalet which was an insane upgrade. Incredible bike. Nice matte finish, lightweight aero frame with wider tyre clearance and bottom-mounted rear brakes. - This thing spanked and I took around 2 road race victories including a stage race jersey on it and a few podiums.

I started cycling in the mid 80's, Apollo V Steel with Suntour groupo....over the past 3 decades, numerous Steel, Alloy and Carbon steeds, I have settled on the Aethos S Works. Curious to see you get behind on one, and get a few hundred K's on it (Climbs and descents) By far the liveliest, confidence inspiring bike I have ever ridden. While its light, I don't feel that is the main reason, it seems to really handle well in all areas.

Started with a Cannondale 2.8, then a Caad 3, caad 4, caad 5, Caad 7, System Six (the original one!), then went a bit left with an Orbea Orca (original one that Mayo rode). Then has a long break from the bike until about 2019 and got the ladt of the traditional shape Cannondale Supersix Evo and still ride it .... love it... also got a Caad13 for yhe winter. This year I got a 2017 Specialized Tarmac for about a third of the MSRP and it's in perfect condition. Now I'm in a semi panic to get some backup Ultegra 11sp drivetrain and some Chinese rim brake carbon wheels and spare brake pads to last me until I die. Started Road Cycling in 2018 after my basketball career and knees went south. But since I had no idea what I was doing spend my money on a 2019 Cannondale CAAD Optima and it has served me well till this year. Have upgraded parts slowly but as I have been getting fitter and riding more competitively the bike is not able to keep up with me any more looking to get into a new bike in this coming year. Looking for a more lightweight build this time around as the CAAD was a big of a heavyweight. I have been looking at Giant TCR as well if I can find a distributor here in the US for TIME the Alpe D' Uez looks like an amazing bike. My bike history is less well-biked. I got a 1974 Schwinn Varsity at 14, then a 1979 Motobecane Grand Sprint (what I call my first "real" bike) while an undergrad. After it was stolen, I was too disheartened, and too busy career-wise, to ride seriously for a couple of decades, though I did acquire a handful of bikes in the intervening years, most of which I kept and am back to riding. After an on and off search of over 30 years, this year I bought a replacement Grand Sprint (this one a 1980) that is currently in pieces. It will be ready to ride again, in very close to original spec, in a month or so. So, in a way I'm also back where I started.

Too harsh for long days doing Fitz's or Peaks. Then came a Merida Scultura, my entry into discs and Di2. OMG never looked back. That is now bike #2 with a Defy Pro 0 taking centre stage. Nothing exotic but it all serves a purpose.

I Chris a quick question: for a not so good descender (I normally get dropped on dowhills and don't struggle on climbs) is a narrow bar an issue? I ride a 38mm bar and was wondering if swapping for a 40 or even a 42 might help improving bike compliance and / or the confidence feeling one might have whilst descending. Thanks a lot if you'll have the time to answer and for your great videos! Carlo (from Italy) 😃
@ChrisMillerCycling
@ChrisMillerCycling Год назад
Hey Carlo, interesting question. Though your bar width is only part of the full package when it comes to descending. A wider bar might give you more room for error in terms of steering, but it’s not going to “help” you as such. If you want to get better at descending, there is nothing better then following someone you trust down a hill and try to follow the lines they take in and out of the corner. Maybe we should do a descending tutorial on the channel soon. Thanks for the question. Chris.

My first thought was what could a Filipino possibly do in the market of highly competitive frames, but it turns out that I should've not looked at the product with my personal opinion on the race itself.
