Thank you so much! You helped me to find and solve a problem music repair shops weren't able to find because they didn't know how to dismantle the headset! Much appreciated!
The ear pads on these have my ears hot and sweaty in ten minutes of wear. I ordered some velvet and foam replacements from ebay. Hoping they'll be more comfortable for longer wear. Only $10 so no big deal if they don't work out. I've been searching the internet but haven't seen a lot of people complaining about how hot these are, so maybe it's just me. I like the sound of these and for home studio monitoring, I need closed back phones. But these get my ears so hot, it's such a relief to tear them off my head and put on my trusty HD-414's. I lose a good deal of bass response but they're so comfy.
I have an old pair of HD 280 pro and the right side stopped working. I tested the driver for resistance and it reads around 53 ohms which I understand to be fine. I tested the cable that connects the right and left and one of the conductors doesn't have continuity. I wanted to replace the cable but I can't find the right cable online. I saw a few forum posts recommending using random earbud cables but I wanted something close to OEM. Do you have any recommendations to replace this cable?
Same thing happened to me this morning. I haven't quite figured out precisely what went wrong but I do know when they broke. I noticed that the right channel wouldn't extend down from the headband assembly, which made for an uncomfortable fit. Being a certified genius I applied more pressure until I finally worked it loose only to find that I had broken the right side. Seems to me that the wire feeding the right side must have lost slack somewhere in the assembly which is why the right side of the headband wouldn't extend.
@@PulseClockPhantom Hahha funny did the same thing wanted to adjust right side applyed some pressure and now its fine sitting, but right ear doesnt work anymore.
Great video! I have a pair that needs the headband cable replaced. I'm in the US. Do you know any sources for a new cable? I thought of 2 pieces of litz wire, if the original is not available. Thanks!
I can't quite tell, are the gaps in the separate plastic parts of the headband supposed to be there? I bought a used pair and was concerned that was a weak spot where they broke but here it seems like it does that out of the box.
Can you run into legal issues reselling modified headphones for a profit? Curious because I have a pair of HD280s that I modified (detachable cable and blu-tack mod), and had the idea of buying a few, modding them, and reselling them at a markup like you mention here. So what chance is there that I get a cease-and-desist letter from Sennheiser for that?
I hope not ;) I started out in 2009 selling modified HD280s so I know the fun journey you are thinking of starting. We have been an official sennheiser partner since about 2012 and they have been quite supportive of our modding - they have even got us to make small batches of modified headphones for them to give to musicians and celebrates. If you are in the UK it may be worth popping us an email and we might be able to help you get a batch of HD280s a bit cheaper
Hey, great video. Curious what you think with all your knowledge. Do you think using sound deadening material inside the cup stuck on the ear caps inside wall would make for better isolation and overall sound deepening (like putting your hands over the cups). Or do you think it's about sound absorbtion inside the cup. It seems if you put your thick insulated muscle over the plastic it deadens the sound and keeps more in. Otherwise you loose sound across the spectrum. In this case have you tried sound deadening on the outside of the cup?
@@CustomCans they do have good isolation. When you put the palm over the ear cup it does transform the sound. It becomes less hallow and plastic like.... Not that it sounds that way without the palm eliminating vibration, but when you lay the skin on the cup it becomes apparent that it is indeed a hollow plastic type sound.
Just bought one, it came with a polarity issue, one side is inverted from the other, center image is inexistent, when I invert one side through software it reassembles the center image as expected. If I can't get them replaced I'll definitely use this video to resolder the cans. Have you ever had a polarity issue before with these cans?
*I want to open a pair of those up that I already own and you some Mass loaded vinyl or the automobile version of it with sticky back to deaden the phone's up more so then I get even more outside noise rejection that's allowed me to hear more nuances and hear the audio far better what are your thoughts on that, is there actually any room inside of it to do that?* ...by the way i ha e the 280 PRO
Do you have any close up photos of the circuit board and electrical connections housed inside of the back of the left channel where all the cables connect? I'm trying to diagnose a break in my right channel. I suspect the wire running through the headband lost slack and broke somewhere along the run when I tried to extend that cup out from the headband. I hope to fix the problem but I wager I need to do a full disassembly to find where the wire broke and ultimately replace it with a new wire. However, I have reason to suspect that the wire may have broken close to the board. When I was examining that board earlier today I saw that the wire for the right channel seemed to terminate to a pair of uncovered twin wires that were soldered to the board. I suspect they aren't meant to be uncovered like that. Then again, the wires for the left channel were also uncovered close to the board, which is why I wasn't sure. Alas, I haven't been able to find a photo of the board with sufficient granularity to give me an idea of what those connections ought to look like.
@@CustomCans Alright. No sweat, man. I'll probably end up just rewiring my 280s anyway. I was considering going with a slightly longer and thicker wire and running it mostly outside the headband housing to prevent another break like the one that caused the fault in the first place. Guess we'll see how that goes.
I own this model of headphones and the inner cable got torned apart from the left earcup beacuse of just folding it as per its own design. Tried soldering the cable again, lasted 3 months. Tried to solder it again with no luck ,but now the two drivers arent audible and with my multimeter I see that each driver solder patch points are having continuity... i already bought another pair of headphones (beyerdynamic this time) , yet i still want to fix these 280hd for a gift. Seems like i would need to change the whole cables from inside the band, right? Any suggestions? Not so beginner on soldering because of my terrible workarounds solutions xP
Ok. I literally just bought these. Had hours of aggravation and spent money replacing my audiobox. So much work, finally to figure out that the headphones came out of the box with a broken wire. these are by far the most expensive headphones I ever bought. They are garbage. A replacement cable cost $50, plus shipping, so I should just by other headphones that come working. Thanks for video - but what's the point when a replacement is going to end up being 2/3's the cost of new headphones. And for $60 I can just buy another brand that works out of the box? The wire quality is garbage. I took it apart to just solder to another wire that actually works, and these wires are impossible to cut. It would have been a better of of my money to literally burn it.
BEWARE!!!... The headphones quality is excellent, BUT the ear pads and headband skin covers start to disintegrate by themselves just an year after I've bought them. They look horrible and tiny pieces of earpads skin cover are falling on my neck. I am not using them so much as professionals do, they are stored in normal (not hot) room temperature, nor I had sweating issues at all. Just the skin cover design is BAD.
