Great informative video, strategy based, logical approach, I've been in the automotive repair business since the late seventies as a tech.,and as an instructor, we need more people as talented as you are in the industry.
I've been a D.I.Y. mechanic for a long time and have gotten quite good at it over the year's, these videos make me feel I'm back at square 1 learning all over again and I love it. thanks killer keep up the good work. and yes I am a member on your pay channel.
I watch your videos all the time whether I have that specific problem or not because watching the way you scientifically diagnose each step and the way you present your thought process makes me a much better craftsman no matter what I/m doing...mechanical work or anything hands on1 Don't ever let any negative comments discourage your methods, you rock and really appreciate the time you put into each video. I was pleased to know your in Denver, I live in Castle Rock so you represent Colorado in style!
Thank you for the very interesting and educational video. I really enjoyed it. I was an industrial electrician with troubleshooting as my main duty in the job and I know from experience how frustrating a problem can be and yet how simple it can appear after the fact. Hats off to you for a fine job. The element of time, or a lack of it, can add a dimension to the problem. Again, thanks, John Studinski
+John Studinski Electrical by definition will always be like that as you well know. I bet if you look back at your experience, EVERY repair you have ever done was actually quite simple but finding the fault may have often taken hours!!
Well were now in Jan 2019, and i'm certainly impressed. It could well lead me to solve my current issues. You may keep getting old, but your video's will stay virtually forever. Chhers
I've watched several of your videos, I like the way you troubleshoot problems. Your procedure is similar to the way my Dad taught me 40 years ago. I agree don't change just continue to improve as we all should thanks!
You SIR ,are a real pro!, I always wanted to watch videos where a mechanic diagnoses faults and more importantly goes through a detailed step by step process, thumbs up to you!.
great approach in diagnose, thanks for a very professional tutorial. it's all about leaning not just fixing .Some would just change every part till they got to the real problem and charge you for it...
Very good diagnostic video! Thumbs up! I truly learned how to take the right step towards this no start issues. Thanks for the great video, expect to have more from you!
God like talent. I learned like 10 new thing from this one video alone. Thank you for taking your time to show us your knowledge my good sir. Much appreciated.
Thanks. It's videos like this that show customers how much real Mechanics like me have to go through to diagnose and fix a problem CORRECTLY, not just throw parts at it. Much appreciated.
You helped me a lot. I'm no mechanic I just try to troubleshoot my problems. if I can't fix it then I send it to mechanic. Thanks for the video you did really good explaining even though you're in a rush for New Year's I think you did a great job.thanks for the info.hope to see more.
2002 dodge stratus 2.7. No spark. Replaces cam and crank sensor. Switched asd, relay it's good. Fuses are good. I have battery voltage at the coil. I dont have anything at the other wire going to the coils that comming from the computers coil driver. I tested a couple coil wires coming out the ecm. I can see the camshaft spin when I crank the engine. Will out of time chain cause a no spark?
The reason I dislike every video you make even though I watch every one and learn something every time is... Just kidding! I love your videos. I thumbs up every one because I like your logical approach and I like how through you are. Keep up the great work man.
I am translating in Spanish your video to some my friends and, besides learning a lot,we admire the positive aptitude you keep even when you are underneath the car. Saludos desde Miami.
Thank you so much for your videos. Im having the exact same issue with my 93 explorer. with what I learned and this video I am confident that I'll be able to conjugate the process principal to Ford (fix or repair daily) and be back on the road.
Very interesting and involved, but good lessons. Diagnosis on these types of issues can be tough, so your input is greatly appreciated. Of course visual inspections on wiring are helpful, but it can be very hard do a 100% visual inspections on all wires, and even if you find a suspect wire, there still needs to be a confirmation if that is the "true issue" or not.
Just found your channel a few weeks back. Love it. You have taught me to look at repairs in a completely different way. I'm a 60 year old tech learning a better way. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Keep doing.what you do best. Some of us are listening. Thanks
Your spark test for the coil is EXACTLY what I needed.. Tahoe been setting for 3 years doing a pcm swap to the 0411 as I thought I had a bad pcm.. Was a bad ignition control module and your test was the ticket to diagnose. Autozone sold me a bad one apparently as I started with coil first... Thanks for the lesson.
Awesome thank you for making this video, my issue is a crank no start good ign coil good crankshaft sensor. No switching signal so you gave me some good ideas to work on. Thank you again
Love the in-depth troubleshooting. As an aircraft mechanic I can tell you there is nothing worse than a professional parts changer - prove the fault and learn something along the way. Some people don't have the electrical/electronic background to do that though. Keep setting them straight!
Will do!! I'm on an airplane every-other-week... and I know there are parts changers in that field as well. Several times I've been on planes that had to return to the airport back-to-back due to improper repairs. Most recently was a bathroom smoke alarm that kept going off when we hit 5000ft. 3 times they couldn't diagnose it.
Don't change a thing . I watch for the different approach you take to diagnosing problems . I always take away something. I have been working on cars since '85 and still find myself learning new things daily. Dealership pattern failures shelter you from the outside world at times.
Thumbs up. Cool that you can correct yourself, but if you had “seen” the melted wire, I wouldn’t have learned anything about other ways to test. The purpose of your videos is to teach and you’re a great teacher. I’m new at car repairs and learn a lot from you. Thanks!!!
I really like watching the material. It shows issues that I don't regularly get to see, but I highly believe in his approach as this is the same approach I like to use. If I suspect something to be the cause, I want to be able to 100% verify that to be the case. Keep the videos coming and don't worry about what others think.
Challenge excepted ! Thank you so much for this video. It led me to find that the hot wire and signal wire from my crank to my coil had at some point been cut and very very badly spliced together. hopefully a proper repair will fix my issues
82 old DIY guy!? Got a 1999 Astro for $800, no spark, etc.. Your input very educational.. This van has many problems, most of which are taking care of?! Had random misfire, after many trips down stupid paths, now no spark.. Will be using some of your guidance today..... THANKS!!!., Love your sense of humor
It's all about learning the troubleshooting process and following it to a logical conclusion. I have 45+ years as an electronics technician /engineer and still have a lot to learn .. Thanks Matt for getting me closer to the 2% club!!
Nice to hear you thinking out loud during the whole video, knowing that your thoughts may be wrong as far as guessing on a result, but correct in the process of getting to the right solution.
@@SchrodingersBox so another question i looked further as I checked them wires and my fuel pump engages regularly as it sits but I found 2 broken ground straps one from my chasis to the cab and one from the engine to the chasis. Could that cause no spark?
"Boy, don't I feel stupid...If I'd have just started with a visual inspection ten inches above the connector for the crank shaft position sensor, I would have been able to fix that in just a minute.... and I'm sure we'll see people in the comments saying they would have done that, whatever." Cheekiness with evidence to back it up? You just earned a subscribe, good friend.
i would have checked that 1st! lmbo. I love this guy. lmbo. great guy. im lmbo right now listening to him. id take my car to him just to listen to him gripe about all the comments. I like learning from him too
great video. not a mechanic , just a lowely carpenter of 24 years .love your well thought out approach to diagnose the possible problems. that in my opinion is what makes a professional instead of someone just replacing parts! people should use your approach in every day life. it works trust me!!!
Great video . my problem was exactly the same , 10" above the removed , tested then replaced crank sensor was the burned section of wire !!! Cut it out , soldered on a new section and good to go . Thank you for excellent diagnostic , common sense but great to have someone walk through the steps .
I’m really impressed with you tactics as a mechanic. Watched many of your videos (some many times). I would like to purchase a diagnostic program like the one you use on your laptop if you had any recommendations I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot man! Keep up the good work!
I agree with you talking and help others to learn and help to eliminate the problems . Like you said the visual inspection first of all the wires would have saved time but we never think of the first things sometimes But i really enjoyed you video and I have been working in my shop for over 50 years now, and I learned from your video. You show me a man that doesnt look for help or read books and I will show you a mechanic that will just throw parts at problems and doesnt do justice. Never sell anyone anything they dont need , for if you do like you want o be treated, then the customer will come back for many years to come and end up buying more over the years and your reputation is on the line also . word of mouth is still the Best advertising in the world, and Trust is what you are building . God Bless and Thanks JW. .
I really enjoy your systematic approach to troubleshooting and your use of basic tools for u s old mechanic it's a treat. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom
I thought it was great . Here because my van stalled out and never started again. Tested fuel voltage first because I'm stupid ,seen low voltage and replaced the pump. Still no start. Then checked coil. No spark. Replaced the coil. Still no spark. And now I'm here hahaha. I think the best part besides me learning a lot, was the end of the video. Completely support what he said. Hard enough working on a car let alone positioning a camera all different angles and editing . Guy did a great job. Even got on the floor for us all. What's to dislike
Good job man...Iam a diesel mechanic myself and still like watching your videos because you take the time to film step by step what you are doing and testing...your right I know a lot of people that would have replaced the coil first....love the videos! Have a safe and happy new year my friend
Bro you saved my life thank u for your Educating videos You help me so much with your technique And how to attack an automobile I love what you do and how you get it done thank you
Even though this was posted 6 years ago the information is priceless that is exactly what I have in my shop and Going on 4 days you did it in minutes thank you for your knowledge you rock.. I was stuck there for a minute ..now I no what to check next ..thank you once again ..
Great video. Enjoyed watching the diagnostic process. This will be helpful with my father’s 96 Lincoln town car, displaying similar symptoms. All I could really ask for is better lighting, but I know that is a tough thing to do in such cramped quarters
Hey Matt, You make the best DIY Auto Diagnostic Videos. You have a great technique for explaining the theory, and showing how to do all the various tests and procedures. I've learned so much from you I have even started to transcribe your videos so I have a step by step how to manual. Thanks for all your help. Gary in Denver.
by the way...your awesome. I've learned do much from you. I continue to watch at least two or three times a day thanks and keep up the great work. also ...the negative commentators are good for your channel...a good story always has antagonist.
I love to see car problems like that. That was definitely not easy diagnosis!! Don't be so worry about haters. They are gonna hate, that's what the internet is all about. Screw it. Keep doing your job, you just do it right. Btw, let me switch to payed channel now so I can catch up with recent uploads :))
Total rockstar attitude in this video. Diagnosed that wiring issue like a boss. Thanks for showing your thought process. I found this video informative and reiterates the bypass test tells you a lot of information.
Good video my friend, as always, good information. God bless you and your family and business and give you the time and patience to keep on helping us DIY people. Blessings.
Great video, I really appreciate the in depth information and explaining what, why, where. I will definitely be dealing with something simalar and I believe this video will be of great help to me on my 98 S10 with no spark.
Thank you for your videos. I've just started to become interested in engine diagnostics and, your channel is a treasure of information. I appreciate your direct approach and find your sarcasm entertaining. I laugh out loud then replaying that section to make sure I understand what you are teaching. You are the Lewis Black of RU-vid!
Schrodingers Box I wouldn't say they are better. They are different. Scanner danner is for ONLY diagnostic - no cooling, no mechanics, no suspension... Your channel is more for people if you know what I mean.
Excellent instruction video on this type of problem, very clear and easy to understand vocal communication. That's important for a slow learner like me. Nice humorous side too ,..seems to come natural for you.
I like gasoline instead of brake cleaner. It makes for a much warmer flame on those cold winter days. By the way, I like the spark tester. It's the little things like that that make life easier.
ahhhhh yes your right!!!! Using your wisdom I have been relishing in the sensational comments from those who didn't comment!!! I'm even more awesome than I thought!!!
+Schrodingers Box Personally, the concept that Steve brings up, is why I find you so little in error. I'm to busy being guided in my own thinking during your teaching to be distracted by tiny missteps.
Hi from Yukon, Canada. You have taught me and others so much, appreciate your scientific mind. As as tribute to my late mom last year, did 24 cold starts ( for free), did 14 well when it was minus 46 c, and now this year, they coming back too me in our last recent cold spell, but as 10 had other issues, and I use your theology, and all have been helped now...., so once again, thank-you for sharing your knowledge.... regards Kenn
Chet Lockard I’ll tell you a thing or two this kid here is wasting his time he should be a Tex for one of the big car company’s he seem like he injoys what he is doing and it is easy to see I’ve been in the bus iMessage for 50 years and that kid is what it’s all about he knows what the f he’s talking about and i joys helping people out honesty is the best policy ok good night it’s time for my nape keep up the great work in helping people GB
Schrodingers Box I don't think Scotty is, himself, a hack. His channel does promote hackery though. It's because all his videos are special cases and he neglects to tell the viewers something very important : "this isn't going to apply to every vehicle, but in this case" . lmao
there is no point in doing that since different cars have different color codes. You cannot think of but by "this or that color wire". You have to think of it in terms of "bypassing the signal" or "shorting the signal to ground".
Great video. Its admirable that you actually trouble shoot and try to diagnose the causes of these faults and not just throw a bunch of parts at the vehicles. I wish I had your knowledge myself. Thank you.
Thank you for showing your work, most video just want to cut to when they find the problem. I think the biggest challenge besides finding your 10mm socket is the Troubleshooting. 👍
