DIY Engine Flush using Automatic Transmission Fluid 

Many old time mechanics used to use ATF to flush the engine when doing an oil change.
ATF fluid contains detergents not as potent as a full engine flush formula/solution. Is it as effective? I'm not a scientist but I'm going to run it through my 5.3L Chevy engine.
