I design and build a fireplace surround for a Superior DRC2035TMN 35" natural gas fireplace. I had to trim down about three hours of raw footage to make this video...sheesh! Thank you to all who were involved in making this project a reality.

Geothermal is probably the best way to heat your home but you'll pay out the a** for it up front.

That's pretty nice! You MUST be a perfectionist! You taped off your caulking. Hey, more power to ya! Wish i had your patience! Serious question, why not just install a ventless gas fireplace so you didn't have to cut a hole in your roof?
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI Год назад
Personal preference. I just didn't like the idea of a fireplace sucking oxygen from the room to burn and then the fumes being released back into the room.

I'd have to dig out the installation manual to get you the exact dimensions but I know it's designed/built within tolerance. Inspector signed off on it too 👌

Pretty sure your gas system is not up to even late 90s code. Should be ridged into the appliance (since there’s no access). You also need a gascock. Other than that cool build, I think.
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI 3 года назад
That could be. Our Town building inspector signed off on it and the fireplace instructions said flexible to the appliance was acceptable (though I realize code differs by location).
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI 3 года назад
I have two gascocks actually. One in the basement below the appliance and one side the appliance where the flex hose attaches to the unit (accessible by removing the front grill on the fireplace).

I’m thinking of doing something very similar. Mind if I ask what this cost in supplies? Not tools necessarily but Materials including the fireplace.
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI 3 года назад
I didn't track what the total project ended up costing but I would estimate all said and done close to a few thousand. This was built early in the pandemic before build materials skyrocketed as well I believe.

Planning to install an insert with a blower. I need an outlet in the existing wood fireplace. Do you know whether I can use regular outlet or any special outlet is needed duebtobthe heat?
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI 3 года назад
I'm not qualified to answer that but I would imagine a standard outlet would be just fine.

Very nice. Curious why you put vents on the side?
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI 3 года назад
Good question! Heat produced from the fireplace gets trapped inside the surround which I felt was both a potential hazard and also a waste of warmth. By adding the vents I am able to circulate the air inside the surround. Cool air from the room is passively pulled in through the lower vents and the warm air from inside the surround is forced out through the upper vents. It worked out pretty well actually!
@Mustafghan
@Mustafghan 3 года назад
@@TheGreenAcreWI good to know. I just want installed s gas fireplace myself. Mine had an inner and an outer tube.
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI 3 года назад
@@Mustafghan Yes, mine has a double walled vent pipe as well which does cut down substantially on heat transfer but the top of the fireplace itself still let's off quite a bit of heat inside the surround that I wanted to utilize/circulate out.
@Mustafghan
@Mustafghan 3 года назад
@@TheGreenAcreWI I see. I thought you would want that to vent out the gases like carbon monoxide
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI 3 года назад
@@Mustafghan I see. If the exhaust vents were installed correctly, there shouldn't be any carbon monoxide escaping into the room. All noxious gases should be escaping through the chimney outlet on the roof.

Great video. But isn’t that a relatively tiny flame for all the work put into that? Does it give off good heat?
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI 3 года назад
These fire starters are meant for...well starting fires. They aren't intended to be a stand alone heat source merely a means of holding a flame on kindling long enough to ignite it without the need for lighter fluid. I use these everytime I burn yard debris or have a bonfire with the family!
@gh05t_mv
@gh05t_mv 3 года назад
@@TheGreenAcreWI I mean the firebox itself. In the last shot you have it on, and pan up to the TV. It just looks like a pretty small little fire. I say this because I’m interested in adding a propane fireplace to my living room but for a means of heat as well as ambience. So I’m hoping mine will produce much more flame that I’m seeing in your video. But the shiplap style you went with is 100% the style I want.
@TheGreenAcreWI
@TheGreenAcreWI 3 года назад
My apologies, I thought this comment was related to my latest video on "fire starters" lol I should have looked closer. I was a little disappointed in the flame height on this fireplace to be honest. With that said though, it does put off a good amount of heat still. For your situation, I might recommend installing a blower to really force the heat out into the room, especially if you are trying to heat a larger area then we have. Some fireplace models allow you to adjust the flame height as well, unfortunately, I haven't found a way to do that with this model.
