Your dress is beautiful! You did an excellent job w/ your dress: beginner..intermediate..advanced! I've been sewing for more than forty years. I'm also self taught. My dolls worn couture before color & mixed prints were a fashion statement! Meanwhile, keep up the good work. Sewing is an art. Like all other art forms, techniques are intended to evolve. I see differently then my mom and godmother. They both sewed differently then the persons which inspired them and so forth. Back stitching reinforces a seam, zipper and or a pivot etc. Also, as you sew more, you'll discover more. This includes but not limited to density/pile of fabrics and threads: IE: synthetic vs. silk (thread) or worsted/coarse vs silk/chiffon (fabric) etc. One of these extreme fabric choices will require a different sewing foot, needle, thread, pins and bobbin tension. Not making these type of adjustments cause more damage. All things considered, needles, pins and or thread breaks.That's a causality of the craft. Like skating though, you expect to fall. However, overtime you just don't fall as frequently. Happy sewing!!!!

I just used this video to make my first ever anything without a pattern. Some trial and error (because I didn't have a zipper, so I made it a wrap-around), but done in a couple of hours, and I love it! Thank you!

Great tutorial! I am a beginner and it is great to see videos that inspire me. I am an avid quilter and I am dying to make a few maxi dresses. I have this fabric in purple and am going to try to use it. I have to make more of a tee shirt bodice but I love how you feel free to create and not worry about mistakes. Very beautiful fabric and dress. It was hard keeping up because it was so fast lol. Be careful sewing over those pins. You will definitely break a needle and possibly damage your machine. Your doing great for a beginner.
