DIY Spray Paint Shaker

Not Handsome but Handy

I use quite a bit of spray paint on my projects and I really hate standing around shaking the cans for a few minutes each time, especially when I'm using a few colors and primer. Even worse is when I don't shake enough or the paint is a little older and it doesn't come out evenly or results in a poor finish from not being mixed well.
Here is my solution to this problem, a machine that will shake the cans for me so I can focus on other things while they're mixing. This will also let me occasionally mix my entire stock of paint from time to time to ensure they stay well mixed sitting on my shelf.
I built this out of plywood and 2x6 lumber with some threaded rod, bronze bushings and a small wiper motor like I used on my rock tumbler project.
This was a fun little project and should come in quite handy in my workshop. Let me know what you thought about it in the comments and if you have ever made something similar or could use one yourself.
Good news, I was in my garage today and found a motor I picked up for future projects and it has a part number on it. Not the exact same as the video but similar square female shaft input. PART# FD MY2007 U222, I found one on ebay www.ebay.com/itm/275500416448

I have been shaking some of my old paint cans for a while lately and finding it to be to hard and exhausting when the paint ball rattler in the can doesn't even rattle for a few minutes - NOW THAT's getting old! So I was wandering about a paint can shaker too. But I was not sure how violent I wanted it. I remember the one I've see in the store for gallon cans of paint - those are crazy violent to have in my garage. So when I searched in RU-vid for "DYI paint can shakers", and yours was the first to come up! Interesting concept and it looks like something I want to attempt. While I was watching I was hoping that you showed some shakings after you finished it. Well done and thanks.
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 3 года назад
Haha glad I'm not the only one that is too old to stand around shaking cans! So far this little machine is quite handy and the speed control allows you to find that sweet spot to get the paint mixing right, depending on how much paint is in the can or how long it's been sitting, etc.

You should build a shacking spray paint storage rack, it could shack quietly for a few minutes a day, or maybe just slowly isolate all the time. Another option would be some kind of magazine that would move the paint one can at a time to and from the shaker.

Fantastic design! I want to build one. I have downloaded the plans. Could you please provide am link to a windshield wiper motor? I have searched around, not having any familiarity with them at all, and can not find one that looks like the one in the video. PS, there are literally what seems to be a ga-zillion RU-vid videos on build these...ones that use electric motors with pulleys and belts, ones made of metal, plastic and wood. Ones that use pneumatic motors, some over-engineered, some under......some that sound funny, others too loud,, (yours sounds like a paint shaker should!)...some with plans, but mostly not....but honestly, yours is just right! thanks much making the plans available, and also min advance for helping me find a windshield wiper motor.

You know if take the same size plastic container with a screw on cap, fill it half way with heavy whipping cream and shake it for about 8-10 minutes, you can get 2 things 1) The liquid will be butter milk and the solid will be homemade butter. I like your idea for the shaker. You can also go online how you can prepare the final process. Thanks, Mike in California

As cool and cathartic as it is, it's really a lot of overkill and expense.. Try the video with a foot of 3" plastic pipe and a test plug. Ten bucks. Hook it up to a drill/driver and spin for 30 sec to a minute and a half. Bingo.
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 2 года назад
I agree it is overkill and more of a fun project for me. The advantage to this over a drill or reciprocating saw attachment is that I can have the paint mixing while I do other things, just keep popping cans in and hitting go. I have many cans that I keep for a long time so I like to go through the entire inventory and mix them all from time to time.
