I like your project. Here's what I really like about it. You can carry the knife in it sheath and use the walking stick in any public area, hiking trail, or park and not cause alarm, but in a flash you can have a 6 foot spear for self defense.
Just finished mine this week. I found these chair leg tips also at Home Depot, The Bushman at Midway USA, the flashlight strap at Four Sevens and added a hand grip for a cain. The hand grip is nice and slips on the staff with a little soap but dried up tight. Using it now when I walk the dog in case we encounter any rabid or aggressive strays....
Great idea, however, I was thinking about build one like this one, but with the blade already attached to it, maybe hidden somehow, because if a mad dog comes running to you, you don't have time to pull your knife from shear to attach it to the stick. Any recommendation about it? Thanks in advance.
I don't know if I mentioned it in THIS video, but if you use it as a spear, you need to use the wood screw. That isn't to keep it from falling off...it's to keep it from becoming permanently lodged on after impact.
Can you demonstrate this on video? I have so many questions: - what wood screw? - screw it where? do you still a hole on the side of the bushman? What about drilling a hole in the stick, wouldn't that compromise the strength of the stick too much, like it would crack there? - without the screw, is it tight enough not to loose the blade? Sounds like you're saying, in fact it becomes too tight even, to the point where it's hard to get the blade off?
I had unsubscribed a while ago for some reason I can't even remember at the moment, but this video got me back. The sheer utility of this stick, the minor modifications, and the Bushman all won me over. I'm planning to build a stick like this very soon if not today. Excellent tips and a great demonstration. Thanks, and keep the vids coming.
They are called spontoons. They were popular in the US after the Revolutionary War up to the Civil War. One of the early naturalists walked from illinois to Florida with one. John Muir in California used them as well. Your design is excellent. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome vid, will be making two, one for myself and one for my younger son who hunts. A very useful item here in Oklahoma. Thanks Chris and keep them coming.
Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts and knowledge for others.... I was raised to hunt, fish, enjoy the outdoors with my family but just recently started getting equipment and supplies together, (Other than standard bulky heavy camping stuff that I already have) Times are tough and I started out slow... Made my owm alcohol stove, fishing kits, first aid, ect, Getting ready to invest in quality cutting tools, and packs large enough to haul my gear..(Your knife vids have been extremely helpful... And I sincerely thank you again, you've saved me from a lot of mistakes..) Anyway, I just wanted to maybe offer up a suggestion.... To save from drilling several additional holes in your Walking stick/spear and possibly weakening the end of it...Since you already have an eyelet in the end maybe drill holes in the attachments where they line up with the eyelet and use a lynch pin or some other type of pin so that you can easily and quickly change them out, and not risk losing them in the water or the knife pulling off the end of the stick after stabbing an animal with it...Thought I would throw that out there...
Great video and as a girl I love the accessorizing. LOL! I also like the fact a teenage boy could use this as protection and survival tools for fishing and hunting without license.
True. Too many people overlook the advantages, skills, talents and usefulness that teens will play in a SHTF situation. I'm trying to form a group/community now where 16 and above will be able to and encouraged to vote on ALL matter concerning the group, and they'll be expected to be trained in guard duty, as well as do other things within the group, like tending gardens and livestock, helping others build shelters and a myriad of other things. The younger teens, if and ONLY when with an adult, can be taught to track, hunt and fish...even younger pre-teens can be taught to track, etc. My Dad started teaching me when I was about 5, and it serves me well to this day. Learn to track, but not BE tracked! I wish you and your teen the best. Like Crosby, Stills and Nash sang....teach your children well..
FYI, the screw hole isn't to keep the bushman on the pole, it is to keep the pole from getting jammed into the socket and not being able to break the knife loose from the pole. Cheers!
i've also made a walking stick like this; however, i made it for travels over ice and deep snow. It has metal screw on the end ( the head side) to grip ice, and has rubber for handle and grip... i would like to see a video on this , and see what you could come up with .... GREAT video....
Excellent! I think I'll do this for my next navigational cane. The price inflation on those has gotten way out of control, and the metal eye on the end, to me, would be the most perfect tip, for sound and detail. Plus all these additional uses you've mentioned. I like getting the most out of everything I have to carry all the time.
Good vid. I like these how to videos better than some of the current sponsored vid reviews. Blade hq finally got the bushman back in. Nice knife and good value.
Great tool I am about to set one up for my wife because she just started walking with her cousin most evenings and in our part of the world its gonna be snake season for a few more months and I figured this was a good solution!!!!
Excellent video sir !! I definitely am going to start working on this project. Talk about a kick-ass multi-tool and weapon. You came up with some really cool modifications. 5 stars 👍🏼⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Well, the wood you want if you can get it is hickory. Properly treated with mineral and tung oil it becomes nearly impossible to break. Also the tung oil makes it nice and grippy. If you can't find hickory, see about an oak staff. As for height, you want something that is minimally an inch or two higher than your eye level. Getting the staff too short is very dangerous, and you could easily cut off some dearly attached part of yourself should you trip and fall while carrying the spear. Typically the kinds of woods used for utility handles aren't properly conditioned and if they break you're in trouble. There are other hard woods that will work, but those are the two best, and of the two hickory is the best. I've also harvested my own, but getting them straight requires some additional work. If you do use a wood you've harvested cover the ends with some sort of material that is a water barrier so that it doesn't split during the drying process. It will usually split at the ends because that's where the moisture evaporates the fastest.
That's a nice way to go for a survival staff , I looked on Cold steels web site but couldn't find the blade you used for the end of your walking stick. What is the blade called on their web site ?
not sure why you'd need to cut open bottles in a survival situation, idk maybe youre thirsty and the bottle caps are stuck. Made me laugh sooo friggin hard!
for my spear tip instead of buying something or attaching my knife i found a old butter-knife/letter-opener i don't know winch it is but its its probably 9in long the handle is flat an 4in by 3/16 in thick i cut the spear shaft with a hack saw so i could attach it it works good enough the top with a cut also helps keep my frog and fish gig on without much help i drill a hole some way down and still tey a peace of 550 around the tine thin through the hole just to be safe
I just had a (good?) idea you should try. tie some shock cord to a tree, and the other end to a pocket chainsaw. as you pull on it, it cuts whatever, and as you let go, the shock cord pulls it, might help cut a little bit. you can make an excuse to carry shock cord by putting it on you walking staff, connect it from the loop thing at the top and somewhere to the bottom, maybe use it as an improvised bow?
Great video. I used a United Cutlery Columbian Warrior Spear Head and coated my handle with Flex Seal. If it wears down I'll recoat it with Truck Bed Liner. Thanks.
Love that survival DIY survival stick you did..! I know it was 6 years ago but hey I found it..:) anyway was wondering if you did any more mods too it or if you found anything better..? Hell maybe you still use it.. Anyway love your Chanel..!
Hey, man is the grip tape, is it like tacky sticky? Or is it like gritty skateboard, or airplane wing walk grip sandpaapery type, lol. I can't tell thanks
Остриё стрелы, также как наконечник копья. ВСЕГДА!!! Должен быть кинжальной формы если конечно ты хочешь вернуться живым с охоты или войны. Хотя и такое гуано лучше чем ничего:)
You have several good ideas for the staff. However, being shorter than you actual height it's easier to injure and impale yourself should you slip and fall.
get you a cold steel billhook or swiss halberd or some other sort of socket axe that you could use as an axe what Pro chopping down larger trees in case you need to build a log cabin
Walking stick Pritty cool. Mine is the cold steel leather neck. When 0n a hike I mount it on a stick. But I have a 357 mag on the my hip just in case I run into a pissed off bigfoot lol 😁🙏 ✝ 🔪 🔫
Built one very much like this. Bought a hickory broom handle at Lowe's picked up a rubber foot for a bar stool there to. Wrapped some bank line and paracord on it. Got my bushman with the new sheath loven it. Put a screw in the bushman if your going to use as a spear or it will jam on to handle bitch to get off. Also carry a frog gig a bit smaller then yours. Caught a couple fish with it don't tell the fish and game guys. Good vids thanks for all the good info.
I don't view this channel 4 Comedy and if I did I certainly would not find anything funny at the expense of another. I watch to see reviews on here and ideas. I may not agreed with everything sad but I support your right to yo,ur opinion. my comment was to the poster of the video. It may have been the fact that I have to World War 2 combat vets as friends. maybe because the research across America program was fresh in my heart. It is something I feel strongly about and while you may not agree with me, it is my right to my opinion. I started making Spears for frog gigging back in the 1970s. I have opinions about the types of spearheads for different applications.
Or you could just be looking for offenses where none existed. "Old people aisle" is an ACCURATE description. It is filled with products for elderly care. And that's where the cane tips are. And now that's being twisted into something like shitting on WWII vets. Sorry, but I'm no longer entertaining this nonsense.
preparedmind101 well said you didn't mention age or anything, some people just need to take offense at things I think seems to give them something to talk about with others. well keep up the good videos.
The first time you get in a serious jam with that knife spear- if its not secured with a screw (plus a 2ndary securing device even if its only tape) that thing is going to fly off the handle then so will you. Just sayin.
In late 2960s at a state park 5 teenage boys came down the the trail, 2 of them had walking sstaffs which had spear heads,i said hay, listen just so you know if a ranger sees that spear they'll stop u give u a ticket for having that in a state park and they may even take u to jail, one is that right, i said tberes a ranger at the packing lot doing a park check for picnicers for alcohol he see you with that u'er in trouble, u better take it off the shaff, save youself soome trouble. When i got to the parking the one kid came up to me and said thank you for the heads up. Where did you get something like that from, whats it made of, my dad made it from lite steel it come into 4 pieces and a attachment at the end of it,its got a hammer, spear head saw and about 14 other things for survival, tell your dad its totally awesome ,how can i get one ,it woud cost about 300 dollars
I don't look for things to gripe sbout and I do find the term"old people" to be derogatory. Maybe it is you eho are quick to anger when someone confront you with something you have done. If I were looking for things to complain about, I could have started long before now. I do watch your videos and do not always agree with your reviews on knives, but recognize them as your opinion and they are not offensive. Your old people comment is offensive. That is my opinion and I ask that you respect that.
The old people isle at a store? Really? Some of us have to use canes for other reasons than being old. Let's have some respect for people who have to use canes and walkers because they haved served the people of this country to their own detriment. That being said, a frog gig eould be a great addition and is a great fishing tip.
If you don't have a sense of humor, don't venture further into my channel. I can't imagine anyone thinking there was malice in that, but hey, it IS the Internet. I used a cane for months after a surgery. It was the only time I could get away with using a Cold Steel cane meant for smacking bad guys. If you must use a cane, Google "TDI cane". That would be my pick.
Give it up man(old). You've bashed him on this video multiple times about a comment that only YOU seem to find "derogatory". Grow up, nobody forced you to watch this. Move. On.
Error, did you must get out of juvenile detention? This happens a long time age. In the country I live in, I am entitled to free speech. He is also entitled to his free speech. That is why I dropped it ages ago. I find it offensive to talk about people with handicaps because I know many veterans who are now handicap because of their service and others who served and are now handicap from their age.
Geez Man. How about plunging that thing at full muscle force into some hard and soft targets. People do videos on these stabbing tools and dont stab stuff. Why bother. I'd love to see you energized up and go through a door, or drywall, a side of beef. How many hits before it breaks...? And uhhh, lots of us are of the "self defense" category.
