Chamois are about the toughest animal in New Zealand, hence why I always go with a shoulder shot, they're soo tough. A very nice edit that show cases the New Zealand alpine hunting environment. I look forward to the next instalment. FYI the little info bubbles were a really cool idea.

Thanks mate. I'm no chamois expert but I'm 99% sure that's a 14-15 year old doe chamois--unless the growth rings are wrong? I'm no expert but the growth rings are pretty easy to read. And NZ huts kick-ass! You kiwis are lucky to have them. I agree 100%--NZ should have a Game Management System.

@@GrittyGearAndPodcast growth rings do not determine chamois age :)
@GrittyGearAndPodcast
@GrittyGearAndPodcast 5 лет назад
@@isaacfilmsnz1 -- Obviously, I'm no chamois expert. But can you elaborate on how growth rings do not determine chamois age? Everything I've read indicates that it can be difficult to age chamois using growth rings--especially on NZ' West Coast, because the annuli are difficult to identify. But we were not on the West Coast and Ryan's chamois has very pronounced and discernible growth rings. Still, it does seem that some people have determined that it's a waste of time to age chamois using growth rings--in NZ at least. All I know is that Ryan's chamois is beautiful and that's all we could've hoped for. Thanks for commenting. I learn something new everyday. :)

A lot of people seem to think that last year's tahr was shot on private property--it wasn't. Last year's tahr was taken on public land as well. Locals hunt the spot where I killed my tahr. Towards the end of this year's hunt, Ryan and I go to a similar walk-in area and kill some mature bulls (those videos will come later in this series). Both hunts are cool in their own way--but I'm definitely far more keen on the remote, wilderness type hunts. Thanks for watching Nick!

We were thinking the same thing. I don't know why--but we'd undoubtedly have some A-hole wrecking our huts if we had them. Or some mooch would move into the hut and try to make it his permanent residence. We just didn't see anything like that in NZ--they've got something figured out over there that we don't.

Ryan is wearing the Stone Glacier De Havilland Pant. I'm wearing the Sitka Gear Timerline pant. Ryan switched to the Sitka Timberline later in the hunt because of the reinforced knees and butt. I wasn't into the knee pads in the beginning. But after getting used to the knee pads I love hunting in late winter, wet conditions with them. Both pants are built to last and are built to breathe. The SG pant is lighter and thinner than the Sitka Timberline. But the Timberline was the ideal weight for the temps and conditions we were dealing with.

@GrittyGearAndPodcast
@GrittyGearAndPodcast 5 лет назад
Thanks Travis. No doubt, with today's gear we can shoot a lot farther with a very high degree of accuracy. Nonetheless, our rule is the closer you can get the better. The distance at which a person chooses to shoot at an animal is personal in my opinion. Not everyone can shoot 480 with accuracy--some people are shooters and some people are ninjas--some dudes are highly skilled at both. One thing is true--the farther the shot the more the variables and the more that can go wrong. But again, shot distance is a personal choice in my opinion.

What does it take to hunt New Zealand, for someone from United States? I'm a hunter here, but is there any over the counter tags I can just purchase and do public land, or do i need to have a guide being from a different country? Anyone have a link on all the details i can read up on? Thank you! Awesome video
@haroldgodwinson832
@haroldgodwinson832 2 года назад
No, you aren't required to get a guide and no there are no 'bag limits' on public land. However, Tahr hunting isn't for the faint hearted as the conditions can be 'extreme'. That doesn't mean you won't be successful if you just rock-up and have a go. But if you don't have any hunting infrastructure arounds you, it will certainly make things more difficult. And if you don't have alpine experience I'd suggest you think very long and hard before trying it. If you aren't a seasoned alpine hunter your best bet is probably to go with a guide or at least someone who has a good idea about what's involved.
