It's my first time doing a proper DIY paint job on wheels so let's se if I can do it. 😅
If you’ve been following along you’ve probably noticed that it is time for the Discovery to get set of new wheels and tires. The rubber paint on the old 18" wheels has done it's job and the General Grabbers has earned it's retirement.
To start it of I decided to fix up some old original 17" rims my self, diy style, and do it as cheap as possible. The wheels are in a really bad condition and is in need of a proper refurb if they are going to take their place on the Discovery.

First time painting wheels, what do you think of the result?? 😅

Nicely done, you are lucky that you don't wear glasses 🤓 like me so I have always Paint on them. I did my Rims I think 10 Years ago. Just changed my Steering Linkage on both sides last Friday.😊 Greatings Sandro from Germany

@@SCGFunktionsmodellbau Hey Sandro and thank you! I have glasses but as you say, luckily I only use them while driving long drives or watching TV. 😅 Good thing you won't get paint in your eyes. 🤓 Do you have the rims still, if so is the paint holding up? I secretly love doing these jobs my self and learning, even though they take a long time to do. Steering arms, which car? The D3 I find to be fairly simple to do, a good set of players and your set. I have change min two times in the past 9 years, was on the way out when I bought the car and last year I think. 😊 Best, SImon.

@@LandRoverDrive Hello Simon, yes I have done all 2 Sets of Rims, and the Paint is still on it, ok I used somewhat of professional paint. This is also the second set of Steering Linkage on my D3 I used this Time Meyle HD Parts, and hope that I can get another 2 years of TÜV because there is quite a lot of corrosion on the door sills. @@SCGFunktionsmodellbau Okay, you've done a good job then. 👍 I don't remember the the brand I used, but I used the same brand now as last time as they held up for 6-7 years. I got some corrosion on the door sills as well and need to attack that after the summer. Will have to practice my welding skills again. 😅

Glad you enjoyed it Andrew! 😊 In the end, and now, I think it was worth it and since I got to learn a new skill I considering it being well worth the effort. Part 2 is coming on Sunday morning and I can't wait. The black rims and the new tires just made for an amazing visual upgrade for the Discovery. 👌

They look great! I’m thinking of getting my wheels powder coated. A place here in the US can do them with the tires still on the wheel. They take the air out, break the bead and push the tire from the front of the wheel and then do the powder coating process. Wish me luck!
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Thank you Jerry! I was considering powder coating my self while doing this job. That's why you can see me a bit hesitating at in the beginning. Sandblasted and powder coated. But was trying to save some money as well. I think it would end up at around 1000 to 1200$ for five rims for powder coating a set of 5 if I remember correctly. 😊 If your beads are in good conditions I think you don't need any luck, maybe with picking the correct color so you'll be happy with them. 😅 So good luck with that then! 😂

Good job!! I've painted wheels in the Biltema parking lot, your way will last a lot longer! I also need to find 18" wheels for my D3😍

@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Hahaha, in the parking lot. Well, you would have had the can of paint I was missing at the end then. 😊 But thanks, they came out great to be a DIY job and the paint is still on the rims so take that as a good sign. These are 17, old ones were 18, the old ones I show with the rubber paint. 👍

Nice work. I used self healing primer on one set of wheels, and satin black as a top coat. Did a similar process

Thank you Rob! Healing primer, not familiar with that? Does the paint self level or something? 🤔
@robgreenhill1426
@robgreenhill1426 Год назад
@@LandRoverDrive hi, yes it sort of self levels and seals any putting and imperfections, giving a smooth level surface for painting. It also seals any minor scratches too. Really good stuff. The finish is good enough without a top coat

@@robgreenhill1426 sounds great. The wheel paint I used also was self sealing so didn’t need a top clear coat. I think I have missed a few of your posts. Didn’t you have a Range Rover classic and/or defender at some point? Have those moved on to new homes?
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Hey hey. Defender went to a new home last year. Was to much to handle at some point, couldn't get on top of everything. But I am keeping a lookout for a Classic. I am hoping to buy one for my 40th birthday in two years time and do a longer trip in it. :) Erik still has his Classic, all though not in working order at the moment, it need a carb refurbish and some other stuff before it is ready for another trip. We will see, maybe suddenly there is a series in the driveway. 😅

@jdenmark1287 Год назад
@@LandRoverDrive nice 👍🏻 thanks for the update. Combining multiple vehicles that need work/maintenance with being a parent is a near impossible task. My friend is currently rebuilding a RR Classic LWB and a Series II 109. It’s a long process. My ideal rebuild would be an early 90/110 with decent body panels and junk every thing else. Then buying a new galvanized chassis, a new galvanized bulkhead and footwells. Installing a mechanical diesel engine like Isuzu 4bd with aftermarket 5 speed transmission/transfer case and aftermarket axle system. Rebuilding those systems have become more expensive than buying new ones. Your friend Eric might want to consider a simple aftermarket EFI system for the Range Rover and eliminate the carburetor entirely.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
I would love an old mechanical petrol, just a super simple engine like the 2.25. Just as a contrast to the TDV6 and all it's bells an whistles. :) But a older 110 with V8 on a new chassies would also be a much appreciate car. Isuzu diesel seams to be the way to go, they really know their engines it seams. 👍 Erik has tried fitech, or what it's called, but he struggled with stuff not working in the set. Don't know if there was something wrong with it. But he decided to go back and keep it as original as he can to keep the value of the car. There are some crazy prices for good 2-doors in Norway now.
@jdenmark1287
@jdenmark1287 Год назад
@@LandRoverDrive those old two doors are super expensive every where. So are defenders in the states. I have the Isuzu in my Perenties and it’s the best diesel ever put in a Land Rover, for sure. If you get a series it’s best to keep it original for value other than parabolic springs. I had a lightweight with the later 2.5l diesel in it and it was surprising how much faster it was than my Series III 109 with a 2.25l petrol. I know the Danish Army was running the old lightweights and I thought Norway did too, but you might have had the early 90”. Check out Withams out of England they usually have the best deals on decent surplus.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
@@jdenmark1287 So true, need to save up for all the LR's I want to have. 😅 Parenties are really cool, wasn't there a 6x6 parentie at some point. We have lightweights in Norway as well, not many but have seen a handful at the LR meetups. The 2.5, do you know when that arrived, which year? Can you find them in a late series 3? A series 3, HCPU would be fun and really build a overlander out of it with a tray and roof top tent. 👌Want to do so much but don't have enough resources at the moment. 😊
