Well, the MIni 4 Pro bad waypoints results are in. We wanted to test out the waypoints and expected great results, but we were somewhat underwhelmed with the results. Maybe we expected too much...
Have you tried creating a DJI Mini 4 waypoints mission? It's really simple to do, but have you tried to re-fly the mission to see how accurate it truly is? Well, that's what we're doing today so stick around and see what happens.
When we bought the DJI Mini 4 Pro drone (Dwight), I was probably the most excited about the waypoints missions we could create and duplicate later in the year to show the differences the seasons make. We've created several DJI Mini 4 waypoints missions and have been really pleased with the results, BUT... I wanted to check and see how accurate these waypoints missions truly are so I figured what better way to do it then to test it for a video.
I brought the idea up to Kristi and she immediately said, "We're going to the surprise flight location to do this test." She didn't give me a second to argue either. She said, "We're going to the 2024 HGTV dream home site." This is the HGTV Dream Home near the end of Pelican Reef Drive. They have a sweepstakes every year, and this year it’s in St. Augustine. This is 4/10's of an acre home, including a new Mercedes and 100,000 cash for US legal residents. The sweepstakes HGTV is having ends February 15, 2024.
Anyway, you may be surprised at these results because the DJI Mini 4 waypoints weren't nearly as accurate as I was hoping. Watch and see!

Lol I know man! It was cool that she came along. She actually insisted on coming along because she wanted to see the house. We had a really good time. Let’s hope she comes more often now. We really didn’t realize how close those birds were until reviewing the footage. That could have ended really bad. Lol.

Lol no kidding. Those were some huge birds. We knew they were close but rewatching the footage we discovered how close. If I’d realized how close they were we may have snorted the waypoints mission. Lol. Thanks for watching as always. God bless!

Hahaha. Sorry man. I say go for it though. You may have some better results than me. But it seems like you have more wind lately than we do! Lol. I guess the results weren’t too bad but that height difference was noticeable to me. In all honesty, I duplicate other peoples tests all the time and they come out as original because we all put our own spin on the right? That’s what’s so cool about drone stuff. Nobody does exactly the same stuff.

All in all, even with the wind warnings I think both flights were very close. WayPoints is something I have not played with that much but it is something that could be very useful for tracking progress over time. Like on a build site. Awesome to see you brought that pretty young lady with you this time to add a bit of class to the We're the Roberts channel. Juist kidding. Still, it is great to see you both out there flying together. Thanks for sharing.

I do agree that the flights were pretty close and the wind may have caused some issues. Maybe I haven’t given waypoints enough credit but then again maybe I still have a lot to learn about them. Lol Eventually I’ll get there. Haha. It was awesome that Kristi came along this time. And I already know she’s way more classy than me. Lol.

Lol I think you the right man. That wind was horrific! I’m thinking I want to try a comparison between the mini 4 and the mini 2 waypoints with the maven app. We’ll see if it works out. Nice job as always and nice to see Kristi again. It look like The two flights were pretty close to me. But then again that could be Kristi magic editing touches😊. I'm going to guess they're only going to be as accurate as the satellites and/or DJI will let him be. I'm going to have to try this out on my Air 3. If the weather ever gets nice enough to do it. Nice video 👍🏻 Cozy that you are both out and about 😃 However, it was unnerving with the bird activity around Dwight 😅 It would've been a fun experiment, if you also made a route point mission with the Mini 2 in Litchi/Maven and compared that to the one made with Dwight in the DJI Fly app. And by the way - I would also love to get Martha's voice back in DJI Fly 🤞🏻

Ok first things first. Martha’s voice is a necessity to us feeling more comfortable flying, right? She’s a lot more soothing than the new voice is. The new voice gets me all anxious. Lol I’ve been wanting to do a comparison between the 4 and 2 using the maven app for waypoints so that could be a great video idea for sure. Those birds were pretty close and we didn’t realize how close until we started reviewing the footage. We may have aborted the mission if we knew. Haha. Thanks for watch ad always, brother. This one was a lot of fun. It was cool having wife come along again. Hopefully she comes along more often, eh?

Nice test! Yes, the wind will have blown it about a bit, pushing it off course and delaying its arrival at some waypoints for sure. Some editing trickery can take care of that, with a lot of patience. The altitude difference, which you mentioned, is a different story. Altitude is the least accurate axis in space that gps will provide, it's just the way it is with these things. Also quite hard to fix in post. What I've found is that flying the same mission a number of times increases the chances of getting usable footage, just a numbers game really. Eventually, by sheer coincidence, one take from several runs at one time will match up perfectly with one take out of many runs from a different occasion. But maybe not for the entire flight, maybe just a couple of segments. And then before you know it you'll be splicing together 6-7 pieces of footage into one... Cumbersome, but that's what I've found anyway. Thanks for the video, entertaining as always ❤

Lol I hear what you’re saying. I guess the results weren’t too bad but maybe I was expecting a little too much. It makes total sense though that if you make a lot of different runs there’s a better chance of having some really similar results. That height difference in our 2 flights was obvious but maybe if we’d done a 3rd flight we would’ve had better results, eh?

Lol there ended up being several show up the longer we were in the air. I think we may have been intruding in their territory. Sort of like HGTV did. Lol.

I ALWAYS make a NEW waypoint mission each time. I then have the drone run it once, to see if camera rotation and drone rotation match what I expect. If it does, THEN I move back to position One(which isn't one but Zero). It flies right every time when I do it this way. This might be confusing, but I also add two waypoints, Zero(first waypoint) and Null(last waypoint). These are Never included in my recordings.

Oh wow your method makes total sense. I like the idea of adding the waypoints at the beginning and the end. I may have been expecting too much from the waypoints from the comments we’ve gotten so far. All in all the drone did a pretty good job but the height difference was pretty noticeable. I’ve done a waypoints mission since this one though and I ran it 3 times. The 2nd and 3rd were pretty much spot on but the first was a little lower in altitude. Awesome advice, brother! I'm not sure about the mini 4 but I've used waypoints with the mini 2 with litchiand for pictures im impressed, it's not perfect but close and I've used it between several drones, the work great for time laspe of projects. That looks good for the waypoints, I don't think you will ever get a perfect match unless you are using a survey grade drone but that doesn't look bad

That dream home looks awful close to the creek bank, not sure if I'dve built it that close to a flowing creek. But hey, who am I to say where they should build?! Lol well it’s cool to know Kristi inspired you to try the waypoints, man. Initially I wasn’t too impressed but after her edit it seemed to be pretty good. She said she didn’t do much ti edit it but the transitions seemed to mask most of the problems, eh? Oh, have you heard of Florida Man? I bet he was the mind behind this build. That whole area is marshland. I have no idea why they decided to build there. I guess most of Florida was marshland at one time though. Lol. Who knows?

It's no mystery that two consecutive waypoint flights, using the same waypoints, are differing quite a bit. The GPS system has not good enough precision in itself for sub-meter precision but needs differential correction data like RTK (Real Time Kinematics). Also, the precision is lower in the vertical axis than the horisontal axises. Do an experiment by placing a GPS receiver somewhere and log its RAW output packets over a 24 hour period. You will see the position driftig around your actual position with several tens of meters. Most GPS receivers are compensating for this drift using its forward movement. That's why you might see a greater position error in your automotive nav app while you're parked at one location but very little error during travel.

I think I understand what you’re saying and it makes sense. I’ve been told if I had done more than 2 flights there would’ve been a better chance of having better results. Hey, it’s great to see Kristi back in the truck with you again! Hi Kristi! That’s my little sister’s name. I haven’t tried waypoints yet, but Dwight did a great job for it being that windy! Good test! Darn, I somehow got dictation turned on on my iPhone, and it keeps typing what I’m saying to my wife, and I can’t figure out how to turn it off! lol I keep having to erase what it is typing. Anyway, great test Kev! Beautiful scenery too! I don’t normally comment on my phone. I hate typing on it, but our power and internet are out from the California storms, and I have to use my phone. Oh yeah, cool shots of the birds too! Glad they didn't attack! I wonder if they were nesting down there? They don't like drones invading their territory.

Awesome question, Ron. Honestly I haven’t had much luck with it blocking the sun but the RC2 screen seems bright enough that I haven’t really had any problems. Where that sucker shines though is it lets me keep the sticks in the controller and I can put it in the case without worrying they’ll get damaged. I learned though you have to be mindful of your stick size. If you have the cinematic stick extensions it won’t fit under the cover. Booooo!!! Lol

Hahahaha. So did we, brother. We haven’t seen that channel much in the past several years except when we go to the doctor and they’re playing it in the waiting room. It’s surprising how much you can get caught up on HGTV when you’re waiting on your doctor to call you back. Lol
