DJI Pocket 2 - How to use its sound options to get amazing audio!

For me, one of the best features of the Pocket 2 is the built in sound. In this video I explore the sound settings, and give examples of each audio mode in use. It's well worth understanding what results you can get for each option, to give your videos the best audio quality. Finally I provide some examples of the almost three-dimensional stereo ambient audio the camera provides, in parkland and urban locations.
How to find the options - swipe down from the top of the screen, swipe across from the right side of the screen a few times till you see "PRO". Tap that icon so that you see the message "Pro on". Press the red record button to exit. Now tap the yellow "PRO" icon at the top left of the screen. Swipe once from right to left. Now you can tap on the four little panels there to get the combination of options you want. Press the record button to exit.
This video was shot in 1080p, 30fps. Wind noise reduction was intentionally left off, as it can give the audio a slightly 'processed' sound, and the wind was generally light. But even with that feature off, the Pocket 2 seems to handle wind noise better than some cameras.
In this video I've not delved into the additional audio features you get with the 'do-it-all handle'. I think those have been covered quite well by others, but I'll just mention that the device does work well with an external stereo mic, and you can also use it with some mobile phone TRRS headsets - if you have one, just try it and see if it's any good.

When you were walking while zoomed, I was half-way to commenting on the poor, pixelated image resulting from digital zoom when I though to check my play quality - it had defaulted to 360p. I think my favourite is Front mono for isolated "voice over"-esque effect, and when in nature with pleasing sound like in your video, the All stereo is amazing. They engineered so that sound source is relative to the lens is also very useful. Thank you for covering many features and tutorials with the camera. I find them very interesting to watch 😊. Excellent explanation of how the different sound modes work. But when using just the mics on the pocket I find that wind noise often becomes an issue to the point sometimes my audio is unusable. So I usually use a shotgun and stereo mic with a dead cat as this gives me much better audio quality and zero wind noise even on very windy days.
@Ozpeter
@Ozpeter 2 года назад
Yes, sadly wind noise is a problem with almost all built-in mics on cameras. The Pocket 2 uses some clever techniques to minimise it in moderate breezes, but this includes reducing the stereo sound almost to mono. So as you say, either wait for a still day or use an external wind-proofed audio system.

Hello Peter, nice to see that someone in the world is allowed out and about again. I think I must be the only person on RU-vid that isn't overly impressed by the Pocket 2. I can see it has better sound features, bigger sensor etc. But it still has to be put together like a Meccano set to get every feature to work, and still has the same old inbuilt battery. The Osmo+ had all this stuff (apart from the better sound) years ago - and with a proper optical zoom. So I'm currently looking at treating myself to a Sony ZV-1 (as my present to me from Father Christmas)!
@Ozpeter
@Ozpeter 3 года назад
Somewhere here there's a review of the ZV-1 vs the Pocket 2. I know what you mean about a Meccano set (young folks, you may need to google that) but I'm finding in my early use of the device that I simply leave the 'do-it-all handle' connected all the time and that's it. Proper zoom would indeed be good but the digital zoom does clever things with the sensor so that it's not as bad - mostly - as digital zoom can be. For some rather different uses of the Pocket 2, see the YT videos by 'Melly Lee' - just 2 so far I think but they are very nicely done.

Well spotted! But I think it's 'just' a magpie (black and white plumage) who are prolific around there, chasing some hapless smaller bird (perhaps a honeyeater), motivated more by territorial considerations rather than for dinner. I might try freezing it on the original footage and zooming in a bit to get a better view. In the spring the magpies are notorious for swooping on humans, cyclists in particular, and there are even a few hospitalisations each year!

A hugely informative video, perfectly executed. Thanks! I wonder if you have any thoughts about how useful this camera would be for filming voxpops in a crowded, quite noisy room. With my current, old-school camcorder, it helps if you're a lipreader! Is one selects, say, forward-facing audio, then switches off the Pocket 2, does the camera remember the settings? Thanks again.
@Ozpeter
@Ozpeter 3 года назад
Glad it was useful. The camera retains audio settings after powering down/up. For a noisy situation, there would be two options - one, set it to front / mono, and maybe if you want to get a clear recording of your questions to the interviewee, flip the camera head round to selfie mode which also flips the audio pickup to yourself. Then edit out the flipping bit if necessary later. Or use front and back to get both people at once but that might add other sounds. Second idea would be to use the wireless mic (if you have the full kit) and attach it to something like a ruler or other slat, so you can point it towards the subject and back to yourself as required. That would also work best in windy conditions (with the little wind muff on).
@wrongsideof40
@wrongsideof40 3 года назад
@@Ozpeter Thanks for this, Peter. The radiomic option - I feel sure - offers a more elegant solution. However, I need the end-user (not me) not to have to worry about using/losing(!) peripherals. Thanks for your 'settings' recommendations; the fact that the Pocket 2 retains these has piqued my interest so I'm now going to buy one to put it through its paces. Thanks again.
@Ozpeter
@Ozpeter 3 года назад
@@wrongsideof40 I should add that the wide angle lens permits the device to be brought quite close to the 'victim' to pick up audio while still not having the person's head totally filling the screen! Also, if being used in a room, bear in mind that this is a small sensor device and needs reasonable light for reasonable results. (No, I can't define 'reasonable!)
@MARKandDIANE28

What is the difference between mono and stereo and which one should I use for vlogging?
@Ozpeter
@Ozpeter 3 года назад
In mono, the same sound comes from both speakers (or headphones) but stereo gives directional information, while tending to pcik up more surrounding noise. But to complicate matters, it could be said that having a voice coming from the centre of a stereo sound-stage, with the noise tending to be separated to the sides, can actually add to clarity. Generally, I'd use stereo unless you want to cut out as much background sound as possible - so as a rule of thumb, stereo in the woods and fields, mono in the city centre. Frankly, testing and making your own choice according to taste is best!
@kontikonsumi2028
@kontikonsumi2028 2 года назад
Thank you so much for the detailed view. Question: Is it possible to have different audio channcels for the setting "front and the back mic (mono or stereo doesn't matter" later in the post production? Or does DJI just merge both audio channels? Thanks!
@Ozpeter
@Ozpeter 2 года назад
Output is always to a stereo audio track - whether one mic is used, or all four set to stereo. So you can't alter the front / back ratio in post production. You don't get access to four channels.
@kontikonsumi2028
@kontikonsumi2028 2 года назад
@@Ozpeter Thank you for your answer! That means no matter whether I use the setting "front and back" (mono or stereo) in the settings I cannot have seperate channels later on in post production? what do i do, when during an interview with someone in front of me a loud motorbike passes, while I ask a question? Cant i just mute the back mic (only), while hearing into the front mic? (later in post production? cant i like say to DJI Pocket, that the front mic should be sent to the left channel and the back mic to the right channel in order to achieve my goal? Thanks!!

Thanks for this helpful video. Maybe this is a stupid or obvious question - if I flip the camera, does the front mic stay as the front mic or does it become the back mic? Doing walking videos, I've noticed that it picks u breathing sounds which I don't want.

The camera's mics follow the orientation of the lens module. So when you flip the lens module towards you, the mic on the screen side is the front mic.

True, but the wind noise reduction system is about as good as it gets. It has no significant effect when the wind drops, but when it blows it gradually switches the audio to mono and filters out as much of the wind as possible.

@Ozpeter
@Ozpeter 2 года назад
No, you can't turn off the front and rear mics. For best surround effect, use "All" and "Stereo" in the settings. That really does give an almost binaural soundscape. You could put a tiny piece of tape or blutak over the front and rear mics I suppose but I don't think that would represent an improvement. Also bear in mind that in order to keep the stereo image aligned with the direction of the gimbal head itself, all four mics need to work - when the gimbal head is pointing to the left, front and back mics actually become left and right, for instance.
