Sorry guys. RU-vid is bugging today. Think the word "White" got us demonitized and deranked so I reuploaded Anyways as far as this video goes, not gonna lie, we felt it was pretty underwhelming mostly because we felt like the discussion stayed on the surface level. Same cultural talking points which arent really the root of the issue. We feel like talking about it once and a while is fine but when the entire discussion is just that, it starts to feel like a distraction but maybe yall disagree. We wanna hear your thoughts!

As a native American.. the only thing about pretty white girls in headdresses at Coachella that offends me is that non natives think they have the right to decide who is and isnt allowed to practice native culture. 99.9% of natives dont care if you wear native stuff that's why sell it at all our reservation stores... the only thing that scares natives is the death of our culture and it seems these anti racist all hell bent in making sure only native people practice native culture so that it'll be all but gone in a century. Culture only dies when it stops spreading and if you want america to be theworlds premier multucultural hub you should at least let the people practice the cultures which have existed in this country for thousands of years and exist nowhere else on the planet. In fact this multicultural hub is the last place on the planet where people should team up to finish off dying cultures. Also to your point about "traditional ceremonial headdresses" anything you can buy off wish isnt a ceremonial headress and isn't a threat to my culture or our practices the same that someone dressing as a priest for Halloween doesnt hurt actual priests. It's almost insulting to think we'd be offended by wearing something made of plastic you bought off the internet for 5 bucks from china. The only headdress you'd ever be forbidden to wear at a party would be one given to you directly from a chief or a medicine man. And to be honest if you were actually given the headress you are probably fine to wear it. This is just another case of white people/SJWs getting all offended on behalf of people who aren't even offended themselves. No human being has the right to tell you how to dress and what cultures you're allowed to admire. When Europeans first got to America the government was so scared at how frequently the Europeans defected to native society that they made having long hair illegal because it was seen as a stepping stone to defection. White people telling other white peoppe not to practice native culture is just an old racist relic of the past because white people were afraid of other white people adopting native culture over their supposedly superior European culture. Any time you lose your shit at a person in a costume you're contributing to our cultural genocide. You know what race I'm not worried about their culture dying? Japanese culture, because everybody is allowed to practice it, it has spread to every corner of the planet. Nobody who gets upset about cultural appropriation has ever contributed to a culture. Culture has shaped us over thousands of years and no human has the right to dictate who is allowed to resonate with what cultures
@SweetLilyofPeace
@SweetLilyofPeace 4 года назад
It is refreshing to hear you say that. I must admit I was a bit surprised by the guys' comments as am getting a bit sick of this cultural appropriation getting way out of hand. As a little girl I loved dressing up in different cultural costumes but nowadays my parents would be lambasted for letting me dress that way. It is getting out of hand like saying cannot use the word blackboard. Seems now people call them chalkboards. Yet we also have whiteboards. I don't think one is inferior to another lol. It is just crazy and does not solve anything at all.

Love this! I saw another video with a similar point to yours. It was Halloween and this guy was dressed in a poncho, sombrero and a fake mustache, asking people on a college campus if his costume was offensive. Thet ALL said yes. But then he went to a little Mexico shopping strip (all the people spoke spanish and some even needed a translator). He asked actual Mexicans if his costume was offensive and not one single mexican person said yes. They said they liked it.

He says "you aren't discriminated against because of your skin color" He is assuming that she never faced any sort of discrimination just solely based on her skin color, which is not only racist, but it denies that person any sort of individualism and also denies any experience that they had. For example, I joined a clan on a game that was comprised of black people, they were all friends. On of the clan members told me that they were trying to make a "black only clan" so I had to leave. That is discrimination. How does this guy know that she has never been discriminated against just because she has a certain skin color. People can be discriminated against for any reason at any time. For this dude to deny that is dishonest and very closed minded. Just because black people in America can have similar experiences doesn't mean they have similar cultures. There are black people in America who never face discrimination because of their race. I know this because I have met quite a few that tell me so. The point is, that black people are not a monolith, just like white people are not a monolith.....his views of the world are sad. Also, the term "reverse racism" is probably one of the dumbest phrases of the 21st century. Reverse racism would equal out to not racism. The reverse of racism is not racist. So I don't really like that question. It implies that only white people can be racist and if you are racist toward white people, then it's somehow reverse racism? White people didn't invent racism...

@onemillionpercent
@onemillionpercent 2 года назад
well, it's the concept moreso than experiences. he makes an assumption that is true most of the time. i totally agree people aren't monoliths, but this was not something offensive. it's not something terrible to say that you may not face this trouble in the world b/c of this one aspect of yours. that may actually be more likely to be true. there are so many other factors as well. saying this is much more nuanced with a sociological lens than boxing a racial group in and saying they can't dance, for example. the first is more likely to be true, the second isn't really a claim one can make, and while it may be funny to some (as it is with any shallow stereotype), it is offensive to some as well.
@vyrusnationgaming1999
@vyrusnationgaming1999 2 года назад
@@onemillionpercent I agree. However most people use skin color as a monolith in our current culture, especially against white people for some reason. I see it with others as well but for some reason white people aren't allowed to voice their opposition to it because somehow they are complicit in it. It's not terrible to say you might not face trouble in this world because of one aspect of your. However it is terrible to say it when it relies on your skin color. If it relied on conscientiousness or strength of character or something that someone could actually control, then I would agree. But when it relies on making a blanket statement about all people with a certain skin color then I think it's gone a little too far and I think it's wrong. People aren't saying that you MAY not face adversity because you are white. They are saying you absolutely will not face adversity because you are white. Anytime white people complain about anything they are acused of having white privilege and are just brushed off as "snowflaking" because they are complaining about injustices. That's not what snowflaking is. Snowflaking is complaining about something trivial that isn't affecting your life and crying about it or throwing a tantrum.

We say were american because thats where we were born but because of family background we usually identify with where our roots are because culturally there truly is no such thing as being american. Yeah we have one that we kinda forced but thats because were not like countries like France or China in which our people were native and goes back to the very beginning of the country and have a deep and complex culture thats been around for generations. Were a verrrrry young country made by settlers not the natives. We are a mishmash of people from all over and culture wise the USA will never have anything like other countries do. Because of that we typically like to identify with our heritage because thats where our families culture is rooted from. If white liberals actually wanted to solve class racial issues.... what would they campaign on? And if minorities could move up.... they might not like the idea of paying higher taxes. And so on.... The superficial issues allow far left liberals to pretend that they really care without caring at all. They have to keep a death grip, especially, on the black vote. Actually helping inner city blacks get out of their class cycle would hurt them in the long run. The last thing a liberal wants is an educated middle class minority thinking they can think for themselves.

5:35 I bet that lady knows a lot about the cultural importance of geishas. There was (and still is) a product from a Finnish candy company called "Geisha." It created some controversy about cultural appropriation a few years back. A Japanese immigrant (or at least I think he's an immigrant) made a RU-vid video about it. He said that Geisha is a job like any other, albeit more traditional and specific to Japan than most jobs and that most Japanese people would see a product called "Geisha" about as offensive as if it was called "Engineer."
@Silveirias
@Silveirias 3 года назад
I've lived in Japan and know many Japanese people (who were born in Japan, have lived most or their entire life in Japan, and are currently living in Japan) of different ages and I have never once heard anyone say a non-Japanese person cannot wear a kimono/yukata/any Japanese clothing item, or dress up as a geisha... Quite the opposite. Japanese people in my experience are excited that people outside Japan are interested and think their traditional clothes and culture are beautiful. Fewer people want to become geisha, and the kimono industry is getting smaller as well, so I have only ever heard Japanese people thinking positively of tourists taking interest and buying kimonos. The only negative things I've heard are annoyance if people think the geisha are prostitutes or if people wear the kimono incorrectly (and even then people want to help you, and not all Japanese know how to put on a full kimono themselves either). The only people I've heard saying non-Japanese can't wear these clothes or dress up as a geisha are non-Japanese people outside Japan or people with Japanese heritage who have never lived in Japan.

The problem is when they start profiting from other ppls culture. Kim K for instance; she started the Kimono clothing line and faced so much backlash from the Japanese for cultural appropriation that she recanted the entire line. It’s weird asf to dress up as another culture for Halloween- u can dress as fictional characters, lady bugs, pumpkins, fairy’s etc. but it becomes weird when you start dressing up as people because it implies that you feel their culture is silly. No other countries are out there playing dress up and dressing like “Americans” for holidays. Just because you want to appreciate something doesn’t mean that you need to take it! For example, just bc someone likes my hair doesn’t mean they can touch it, just because I like how someone at work dresses doesn’t mean I should go buy the same outfit as them and wear it, it’s fucking weird.

Same thing with “Latino culture.” Many Latin American countries have their own cultures since some are more African, European or Amerindian. The same thing goes for food, dances and music. Many Latin American countries also have their own dialects, slang and indigenous languages so it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what “Latino culture” is. Same thing with “black culture.” Black people all around are not a monolith and the culture varies from location to location.

So I don't think all white people think and even associate with all other white folks like I used to think. Irish is one race that seem to really separate themselves from all other white races. I used to think Portuguese was white until I met several different black Portuguese. Like Latin countries where color of skin is irrelevant to your race. Every single Latin race ranges from white blond hair blue eyes to black skin and kinky hair ect. So all this race separation Is more relevant in states that are less diverse I guess??? moniqueresendezful Sorry, but you’re using the term race/races in the wrong context. Mexican and Puerto Rican are not races. They’re nationalities. Latin America is actually more of a melting pot than the USA because for many years marrying outside your race was illegal here. (anti-miscegenation laws) Racial identification is more fluid in Latin American countries due to the 400+years of race mixing. However in most of those countries the ruling socio-economic class are white and still identify as white mostly being descendants of Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors and colonists. I’m sure you’re aware that Spain had a racial categorization system in place called the casta system which placed the different races on different socioeconomic levels from white Spaniards born in Spain at the top, whites born in the New World second, mixed race people in the middle,with Indigenous(Natives) and Africans (Blacks) at the bottom. This system was abolished legally but its still mirrored in many Latin American countries today.

i completely agree that a big issue with the discrimination and racism has to do with poverty and class... a lack of wealth in a certain area wears away at its social aspects through hurting the educational systems, centers that assist people in that community, etc. so then people in those communities feel alienated from other communities, because they feel that with the poor education and lack of opportunity, they can't get out of their situation. also, i really don't know if it's my place to say this (please lmk if i'm wrong), but i feel that the way black celebrities are portrayed is actually indirectly causing issues. we're almost creating this stereotype that you can't be successful while black as an every day person, unless you're a celebrity. and you see a lot of black celebrities (mainly musicians) focusing on money... while i don't think that's wrong in and of itself, that constant theme being promoted and associated with black culture is keeping nonblack people from seeing that day-to-day black people are seriously underprivileged. and for me, i feel that the celebrity culture as a whole (regardless of race) focuses so much on being wasteful with money because it's so focused on spending as a form of entertainment for others, something that we could use to actually help underprivileged people. again, i'm not shaming celebrities for talking about money, it's just when it's the constant theme of it promoted (because i know there are potential celebrities who don't talk all about that, they're just not as famous typically), there's something underlying in our society that is off. anyways, yeah, i don't think that the whole issue is the celebrities' faults, but more the society we've created. so essentially, back to systemic racism.
