I've put a few silica gels in my camera and lens bag. So far so good 2 years fungus free. After watching this video, I think its better to buy a dry box
WOW !!! Silica gels sounds so cool 👍. 2 years fungus free is awesome 😊. A dry box or anything dry should work methinks 🤭. Thanks for sharing this with all of us ❤️. - Rin Othmani, Channel Admin -
The silica gel packs are almost totally ineffective unless in a sealed container - which your camera and lens bag are not. There is a finite amount of moisture they can absorb and in your camera bag (which is not a sealed environment) they will *rapidly* max out on what they can do. Unless you're changing them every few days those gel packs that have been in there for a long time? They're not doing anything anymore.
I think it depends on where one lives or visited. Without storing in a cabinet, let alone a dry one, I never have any issues for over four decades, including cameras & lenses that I bought in the late seventies, such as Nikon F2A, Hasselblad 500 C/M, 50mm, 105mm, 70-200mm, etc.
You're right. It really depends on the humidity and the weather 😊. Thank youuu for your feedbacks, we appreciate them ❤️. - Rin Othmani, Channel Admin -
I store those in plastic pouch with silica gel in it and then inside the bag. 5 years fungus free. Before storing them for a long period I always clean the body of the lenses with 70% isopropyl alcohol (not the glasses) to get rid of any fungus specs that might have been there during photoshoot. Weather sealing gasket is still soft and not cracked. But not gonna take a chance, will think about the dry cabinet now.
I made a sealed, melamine MDF cabinet with a clamping perspex door and simply placed a Hippo moisture absorber unit in it. It can hold 700 mL of water, but after 3 months, not a drop so far. Worked out to be a 1/4 of the cost of a commercial dry cabinet. it's also worth noting your own location's RH throughout the year, as it will peak in summer but some areas are quite dry and such a cabinet isn't really required.
In regions with a tropical atmosphere, it´s a must have, but it seems not be the case for my location: 20 years with some silica gels in a cabinet in my living room...no fungus! I guess, on my location (central europe) it is important, that the air is able to circulate, to be able to dry as fast as possible...my cabinet isn´t air tight. Also i don´t put my equipment a.s.a.p. into the cabinet after a trip. I give my Lenses time to dry. But that wouldn´t work, if i lived in japan...sometimes they have tropical weather with gazillion % humidity, so the only way to be able to dry your equipment is such a dry cabinet.
Giving time for ur equipments to dry out is very smart indeed 👍. I agree with you. It really depends on where you live. So buy according to your needs. Thank youuu for sharing that with all of us ❤️. We appreciate them so much. Thanks also for watching ... - Rin Othmani, Channel Admin -
Be careful. My cab uses analogue hygrometers. The needle showed I was in the safe zone. But what happened was the needle was stuck, the dehumidifier motor was kaput. In the end, I lost 5 Leica lenses to fungus & poor workmanship. In the past, these cabs lasted forever. But now, knock-off models can break down any time.

Agree 100% all my equipment sleeps in a dry cabinet for 12 years now and have zero fungus. Best in investment I’ve made, previous to that I ruined my lenses due to ignorance. I keep it at 40% as well ( analogue but I check it often and adjust if need be )
I bought a dry cabinet when I firstly learned photography to store only my Nikon D750 and 24mm lens. Now I am totally using mirrorless with 2 bodies and bunches of lenses. It is too tight for all of them. I think I may upgrade to a bigger one.
I don't know what's stranger, I've been shooting for 20 years and never heard of dry cabinets, or that none of my gear in this time has had fungus issues. I also live in Vancouver, which is a rain forest, minus the forest. But...we are not humid here at all so....knock on wood for now.
Have u ever wondered, What happen if my video's frame per second is wrong 🤔🤔🤔 Lets listen to what Andrew have to say in Beyond Photography RU-vid channel and do support our E-Learning courses Channel admin Farah N 😉 😉 😉
Do you know the hygrometer that built-in with the dry cabinet is not accurate? It shows 45% Rh but when I measured the humidity with calibrated hygrometer it is actually at 60 something. So I set the value of the dry cabinet at 26% Rh which can manage humidity inside the box around 45% Rh
i’m starting to study photography deeper before lockdown (march 2020) here in the philippines, yet i forgot to have this dry cabinet (because i cant use my camera anymore and i forgot i have one 😅) then i saw this vid now (march 2021) its been a long time, i think i will start to study again.. i will buy the dry cabinet asap.. thanks to this video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤓🤓🤓

Searching on YT someone who could comfort my opinion that cabinet are useless until 4:35 . It was like he was talking about me :D :D :D I ordered a dry cabinet right away.
I think its one of those things not a lot of people think about. I live in the deserts of the US and our humidity is below what he recommends, never have had a problem with fungus. I went to Thailand for a month right as Covid was starting to go around. I came back home and my equipment left in the bag for roughly a month. Some of the lenses developed fungus because it hadn't been able to dry out. Going to make a cabinet to store my lenses in from now on. I don't need a dry cabinet but I need to make sure they don't stay in a bag after going to high humidity places.

Hi friend 🙂 one question: if I put inside the gabinete a instant camera that it was outside and I not sure if could have mold, the mold stop it or my other gear inside can be damage?
hi, great video! btw i got few questions : 1. can i store a lenses with fungus in it along with other lenses that are fungus free? 2. if a lens with fungus in it stored inside the dry cabinet, will the fungus keep growing?
Hi ... Thanks for watching. 1. I don't think you should store a good lense together with fungal laden lenses. 2. Not too sure on this. I guess u can try n see how it goes 😊. - Rin Othmani, Channel Admin -

1. Mr diy, air tight cheap "tupperware" 2. Tesco dehumidifier 3. Daiso humidity meter Thats me 🤣 just change dehumidifier 3 times a year that cost me below rm10
Me again, after a year from my earlier comment. Still use the same setup but upgrading to rechargeable dehumidifier. The con? Need to recharge after 2-3 weeks The pro? I can leave home without worrying the dehemidifier will turn off or short circuit and burning my house down.

I used a dry cabinet. But over the years, my lens collection has grown in numbers. So what was sufficient then is now getting cramped and the lens is rubbing one another. Is this alright?
I think camera lenses shouldn't be rubbing agaisnt each other. Maybe you can give them a little bit of space, just to be on the safer side 😉. Or you can add a another dry cabinet 😊. Thanks for watching 😍. - Rin Othmani, Channel Admin -

in my case I put my dry cabinet on my shop so I had to turn it off when I leave every night , so it is turn off for 8 hours during night time and I turns it on for 8 hours from morning to afternoon. Is this safe and okay? I am worried. And I notice the humidity stays at 60% on my first day turning it on

Can a Dslr shutter seize up if the camera hasn’t been used for long periods , for example 1-2 years or so? If stored even in a dry cabinet at the correct 40-50RH? Thanks in advance 👍
Hello, great video... just curious, most important part will be the humidity yeah? i kept mine at RH = 47, temperature usually was affected by the room, is 31 celsius ok? 🤔

I think, and this is my opinion alone, with daily usage of camera, the chances of your lens developing fungus is likely minimised 😊. But it's also a good thing to invest in a dry cabinet 😉. Thanks for watching 😍. - Rin Othmani, Channel Admin -
Loved the video. Any idea about a specific brand like, I hear a lot about Andbon. As if its the Canon of Dry cabinets. But wanted to check if Hiniso also equally good? Actually Amazon is not delivering andbon at my location but Hiniso is available. So was checking if Hiniso also good.

You can use single use dehumidifiers containers in a box or even a spoiled dry cabinet as long as you check the water lever every regularly (one container can last around 2 to 3 months depending on the size). When you see the level water more than a half container is time to replace for a new one. But if you never check it, you might face the problem mentioned on the video seeing your lenses floating on water.
It was a little flimsier than I expected. I had to add a 2x2 piece of wood to the bottom on the rear side in order to stabilize it better ru-vid.comUgkxXTh-lz-8W6GcB219vTLp27-MxbZYObBX . It is also starting to bow a little at the outer wall ( I've had it up for about 6 months), I've already had a shelf tumble down because of the bow and the fact that the little shelf brackets are quite short. I went out to home depot and got some longer ones so that the shelves don't tumble down again. Overall, it looks very nice for the price and it holds a lot ( I use it as a pantry). I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just strongly suggest reinforcing it before putting it up.

This video is partially misleading. You don't need a dry cabinet if you don't live in a very humid region of the world, or in an air-conditioned setting.
I bought a dry cabinet recently, I was keeping my gear in an air-conditioned room where the humidity is lower and only taking it out when I would use it, but, that caused a problem, condensation. When the relatively cool gear moves out of the air-conditioned area into a warmer more humid area condensation starts to form all over, but more so on areas that absorb heat quicker, such as metal and glass parts, even inside lenses. I'm now keeping my gear in a non-airconditioned area, in a dry cabinet, as that allows the gear to stay at the ambient temperature without being exposed to the ambient humidity when not in use.
@@dtucny Condensation isn't an issue if you let your gear acclimatize in a camera bag. I've only experienced condensation twice (years ago) and it's pretty easy to avoid. For most, keeping gear in a bag with silica gel packs is more than enough.
@@Tinfoilnation That's where the desiccants come in! Besides, I have shot in the rain, wiped my camera dry and didn't even need desiccants to prevent mold from growing on the gear in my camera bag. Unless your lens is literally covered in water droplets, mold growth is unlikely in the short term.
