#askgcntech Hello guys. I have a cheap 8 speed microshift rear derailleur. I wanna change that to an 105 or ultegra 11 speed. I know I need some new wheels with a shimano 11 speed freehub. I am surrounded by mountains so I'm thinking of an 11-32 cassette, but now the question, do I need to buy new levers, or can I use these (8 speed) hand levers that were originally on the bike? Tnx and cheers.

Hi GCN Tech. You should also note that you cannot use a C02 inflator on a latex tube. The cold air from the C02 cartridge makes them "brittle" and they'll most likely blow within a few Klms. I had several frustrating experiences before the penny dropped. I now run latex tubes, but my spares are always butyl or tubolitos. I just change back to a new latex tube once I'm home.

I switched to latex inner tubes and they do feel both faster and more compliant, however they do not hold air pressure very well at all. If you go with latex be prepared to pump up your tires every ride because it will absolutely be required.

I run some VERY light latex tubes (60g challenge brand) and haven't had any punctures so far, but much better ride quality and overall comfort and feel. The downside is that they can't reliably take pressures over roughly 100PSI without splitting open randomly, but heavier tubes like the vittorias (~70g) seem to do fine. It's one of the cheapest cost to watt gains I know of and makes your bike feel noticeably more comfortable and faster, would definitely recommend them.

Been using Vittoria pink latex tube for 4 months now. One puncture on front tire, two on rear. Punctures are really bad one. Run into huge potholes that the tires are torned. Tires are unusable, changed to new pairs. However the tubes (which are also torned) are patched using extra Vittoria latex tube. Been running for 2 months now. Patch works very good! Last week got the second puncture on rear wheel. Puncture is at new spot, the previously patched spot has no leak at all.

Re: Solid tyres: I ride solid tyres for nearly three years for my commute bike from East London to Central London (about 1 hour ride each way). The ride is hard, harsh and bumpy. There are days I absolutely despise the ride but they always got me to work and home. Have not stop once to fix a puncture so it is a tolerable trade off for me. Rode many of my normal roads, had many years of data, and switched wheels day to day just to confirm, and it was 7 percent. Well explained on the saddle position question! The problem I have though is setting identical saddle height with different brands of saddle. If the top surface of the saddle isn't flat and the profile varies between the saddles, what point do you measure to? A lot of people just take a point somewhere in the middle, but common sense migh dictate that the back of the saddle, where your sit bones are making contact, would be best. But where exactly? The height of the saddle can often vary dramatically in different places towards the rear..

I cut patches from disposable latex gloves and place one on top of the other. The deal is that they stretch with the tube, so do not inhibit the tube from stretching as normal patches do. This relieves stress from the tube preventing further ruptures alongside the patch. This has proved more than adequate for thorn punctures (which are numerous here) over many years of cycling. Yes, slime is good but doesn't always work. Note: do not put liquid glue on the latex patch as this will cause it to wrinkle and become unmanageable. Apply glue to the tube only and wait for it to set off to a contact state, then firmly press the thin (dry) latex patch onto the tacky contact cement. Repeat with a 2nd layer of latex to protect the patch from abrasion, or just use thicker latex in the 1st place. These patches are reliable for the life of the tube. I would not use them for larger cuts but for thorn pricks this is awesome. Sceptical? I don't blame you, just try it and see.

R. E. Michael Kelly - you may need to check your rear Derailleur compatibility. The current 105 (R7000) groupset is compatible with 34 tooth on medium cage (RD-7000GS) but only 32 on the short cage (RD-7000SS). To use 34 you may need to buy longer cage or get a hanger extender. Older models of 105 have Lower max tooth capacity too, so a hanger would be needed too. That is the cheapest option without buying a bunch of new parts.

Also remember that a Shimano 11-34 is actually 10speed width on the freewheel so you'll need a 1.8mm spacer. I run 11-34 on the shorter cage and it does work if you fiddle with the B screw to limit the travel slightly

@insquares
@insquares 3 года назад
Check with the carbon wheel brand. Generally, latex tubes shouldn't be used with carbon rims due to the heat build-up when braking. But, this is highly variable due to terrain and braking style (dragging the brake vs. pump and release). I use latex tubes with my alloy and carbon rim without issues but I don't have very long technical descents and don't drag my brakes.
@hebrews11vs5
@hebrews11vs5 3 года назад
And if you are prone to reduce rolling resistance a bit too much, a latex tube will expand quicker than butyl and thus explode more frequently if you say, pump to 130 psi one cold morning and the temps rise during the day as the sun bears down on your carbon rim.

I am not a feather weight and don't want wheels that will collapse when I get on the bike. How ever most wheels for some reason come with either 24 or 28 spokes. Sometime both. My question is. To keep the strength of a 32 spoke wheel in a 24 or 28 spoke wheel. Would going for a deeper rim make up for the lack of spokes? I am also going for alloy rim. If I wanted rims that didn't stop in the wet. I'd keep me ceramic rims on the bike.

Is though about this to and decided it depends on your road surface if it’s smooth tarmac then it doesn’t matter but I’ve found that on rougher roads the area where the car tyres run is typically smoother and more quiet so you could probably deduce a little faster too.

#AskGCNTech Is it possible to convert a flat bar, belt drive commuter bike into a drop bar, belt drive gravel bike? Tire clearance is not a problem.
@chris1275cc
@chris1275cc 3 года назад
That depends a lot on what you mean by commuter bike. If we are talking traditional Hybrid then it is usually doable with good results, the main issue you tend to run into is that the top tube length is longer than it would be on a traditional Gravel/CX/Road frame. Providing the top tube isn`t massively longer you can reduce the reach with your stem and bar choices, measure your top tube length then go look at the geo charts for Gravel bikes online (of equivalent size) and see how much longer your top tube is and go from there. Stems wont be an issue as they come in all sizes and are pretty cheap but if you go too short things can get a bit "twitchy" so its better to even out the reduction between the bars and the stem.

#AskGCNTech. Hey again GCN! If you could only buy 1 bike and cannot upgrade them (except for wheels), would you rather go for a lower grade carbon frame with a top of the line electronic groupset or the same but higher end carbon frame with same but mechanical groupset?
@itsyourboiiemil5450

Electronic group sets aren’t going to make as much difference as a higher grade of carbon so I’d choose the better carbon and mechanical groupset
@ghowell13
@ghowell13 3 года назад
Framesets are always going to be the highest ticket item in a bike build or complete purchase. Were it me, I'd buy the best frameset I could afford. Groupsets can be much more easily purchased in comparison, or even pieced together bit by bit. Example, I'd rather an F 12 with a Ultegra mechanical groupset, than a Prince or Gan with Dura Ace Di 2, if that makes sense? And all other things being equal, wheels, brakes, and so forth. Now, for reference, and to keep everything in perspecrive above, I recently started to race BMX again, after 32 years, on a 16 year old Specialized S-Works Hemi I rebuilt. And I try to ride my 2011 Trek Madone 5.2 about 4 times a week to keep the middle aged spread at bay🙈. I'm 47😂

@JMCyclingVideos 3 года назад
Normally I would say higher grade frame. Just due to the fact that everything around the frame can be upgraded. But since you said cannot upgrade, I'd go electronic shifting all day every day. You'd be hard pressed to feel the difference in carbon grades, but you will feel the shifting hundreds of times per ride. I've ridden lower and higher spec frames (BMC Teammachine SLR03 versus SLR01, for example), and the difference is almost entirely weight, not feel or aero.

Tannus tyres are mostly horrible. I had them on my commuter for a couple of years. The one good thing is no punctures. For everything else they're bad. They lack grip, have a weird profile so cornering isn't great. And the clips wear out over time, leading the tyre to detach from the rim at speed.

#AskGCNTech I’m registered for Unbound Gravel (formerly Dirty Kanza) in June and am working on my hydration setup. It seems that most riders use a hydration backpack or vest. I would prefer to avoid this as I get a sweaty back and it creates a lot of irritation for me. Do you have any advice on how to carry 3+ liters of water/sports drink along with the necessary nutrition and repair supplies without a backpack/vest/fannypack? Thanks you.

I think your hands are too dry so theyre gripping the rubber too much. Maybe try a miniscule amount of lotion on the whole hand or just the affected area. Or, just put electrical tape on where you rest your thumbs on the hoods or just wear groves

#AskGCNTech I haven't used my wheels for quite some time (having ridden a lot indoors) and now I want to use them outside. Those are fitted with tubeless tires, with sealant from the previous application (some 10 months ago). Since I haven't been using those all this time, I was wondering, do I need to re-add some sealant?

Depending on the amount and brand of sealant, as well as room conditions, the sealant may have dried. You can do the 'dipstick test' and remove the valve core and put a small zip tie or similar in it to check the sealant level.

#AskGCNTech In a top level pro time trial how is the time measured when a rider hits the course? Is it exactly at the end of the countdown or is there a more accurate measuring that also takes into account the little time gap between the end of the countdown and the moment the rider actually starts to roll down the ramp? With pro time trials beeing measured within hundreds of a second at the finish, it would seem a bit strange to me to be inaccurate at the start.

#AskGCNTech: Vittoria Air-Liner Ammonia in Sealant Warning = Si pointed out & Vittoria tech has confirmed that the Sealant used with the Air-Liner should not contain any Ammonia. I contacted the Sealant Brand I use and they stated "Ammonia is present in all natural latex solutions - we minimize down to .001ppm". So is that safe enough? Vittoria was no help in naming brands that would not be compatible. With all the different Sealants being used by so many riders, unless the Brand was crystal clear with their ingredients or at least Ammonia content, how would a rider know? Interestingly, Muc-Off one of GCN's sponsors does say Ammonia Free in their website's Product Feature page. The Brand I use does not mention Ammonia at all. I looked at a few other brands with similar mixed results Mountain & Gravel riders have been using Liners for years including Vittoria's watching YT videos I did not hear any of them mention of Ammonia or damage to their liners from sealant. Feel Free to Edit in anyway - Hoping Alex (aka Mr. Tubeless) can handle this topic. is ZERO Ammonia the only safe level?

@jonnythelegs2597
@jonnythelegs2597 3 года назад
You have to use pre glued patches on latex tubes, can't say I've ever noticed the difference between a patched vs non patched tube. I've been using them on and off for nigh on 30 years now and I've used most of the brands out there at some point. Most issues are normally down to storage as they degrade if not packaged well and you have to be careful not to pinch them when fitting. The ammonia in some latex solutions can break them down too. Treat them with care and you'll have a lighter smoother and faster ride compared to butyl tubes.

They are however more resistant to pinch flats, latex being a more fleixble material might be the cause for this. Pinch flatted latex tubes can be repaired from the inside with latex sealant, let them sit slightly inflated for a few days while the sealant hardens and you're good to go. The sealant doesn't repair the holes unless the tyre also gets punctured - And yes, it will get messy!
