This is the most wonderful lesson! Thank you so much. I learned a lot from it. Can’t wait for the next lesson. Debbie, you are just the best teacher ever. ❤️😘
I've watched quite a few videos, but none were as helpful as this one because they never started from the very basics as you did. I will definitely practice these strokes. Thank you so much.
Margie, I am So happy this was helpful and my teaching style resonates for you. So so many amazing and talented artists I’m thrilled to be one of them for you! Lots of warm ups, practicing brushstrokes and you are going to be an amazing floral artist 🌺 And so fun when you develope that muscle memory and confidence.
I started out in acrylics and now I’m going towards watercolors. This tutorial is so helpful. Your instructions are very clear, and you speak to adults, not kindergartners! I’m so glad I’ve found you!
Thank you so much and I’m so glad my resonating style works for you and that you found me too! I teach how I learned best honestly and I hope to continue to inspire you and answer any questions you might have and supporting your new watercolor! Happy painting, friend 🎨🌸🖌️
So happy to have found you! I began water coloring during the pandemic. After awhile I got so confused with so many different ways to paint. I bought Archers paper and I love the Windsor Newton paints. I love Princeton brushes, too. Long story short, I just gave up. And got DEPRESSED! My daughter told me to start painting again. She said I was happy when I painted. So I have been painting with you for a month or so and I’m happy again. I like the way you teach. I’m a retired teacher that worked with dyslectic children and adults. Well, the pandemic is over? My husband and I contracted COVID last week. I’m just beginning to feel Iike I may live through this. Today I made the transparent flowers you showed us how to make. I’m an artist, again. Thank you so so much. When I was too tired to keep my mind on a picture I just practiced your strokes. Thank you again. ❤
Good morning Maxine, and thank you for sharing your watercolor story with me. Im so happy that your daughter gently guided you back to what brings you joy., you found something that you love. Art also does this for me. I hoe you and your husband are on the mend. The transparent flowers are magical arent they?! What really made me smile is to read your words "I AM AN ARTIST AGAIN" Wow, beautiful. Feel that in your entire being, remind yoursef daily of this, that is truly the truth for you! I h ope to continue to inspir and support you in your watercolor journey! It is my pleasure xo
I’m So happy. It is a practice most do not do routinely. I think it’s difficulty is in the simplicity. If you practiced even a few mins everyday, exploring and playing you truly would be amazed. Happy painting and most of all have fun!
I’m SO happy I discovered these tutorials❣️Wish I had sooner. I still consider myself a beginner and I’m passionate about learning how to paint watercolors!
I still consider myself a beginner and I've been painting my entire life with watercolors. Always something new I discover :-) I'm so happy you found me in this giant wealth of wonderful watercolor artists. Welcome I hope to continue to bring you lots of fun techniques and tips~
Glad it was helpful! It truly does help, and you will develop that muscle memory more and more and be amazing how it helps with your confidence. :-). I also have a Beginners course a bit more comprehensive with worksheets etc. debbie-walker.mykajabi.com/offers/RkXzKGF6 Meanwhile lots of fun stuff here too! Happy painting friend, Im glad you found some good tips.
Excellent video for beginners to practice and a great idea to use these techniques to warm up before starting a painting. Would have loved to have this when I started out in watercolours.
Me too Tidus; when I was in college taking art, there were no computers, youtube, videos to watch; you had to go to in-person workshops, and classrooms or maybe find other artists willing to help you. It was mostly self-education and trial and err. So nice today to have so many amazing artists at our fingertips!
I'm so glad it is helpful. I try to give as many different ways to help. I also have free drawings on my website under free resources and a brand new online course for beginners its much more comprehensive, slower, and has worksheets too. The more you practice you will develop that muscle memory and start to feel like "I Can paint that" :-) Happy painting friend, and have fun!
Thank you so much. I am brand new to any sort of painting. I am really loving it. I have been trying to do some flowers and it has been such a struggle. This helped me SO much . I always believed I had no artistic ability. I now know anyone can do it if the desire is there. I will continue to practice and watch your tutorials.
Thank you Darlene! You are my favorite student and subscriber. Its always been so enjoyable for me, to hear exactly what you said "I thought I had no artistic talent..." I'm happy you are finding your way with watercolors. They are certainly magical~ (I'm a little biased). Absolutely, I truly believe, if I CAN DO THIS... YOU CAN TOO~ xo Welcome Darlene I hope to keep playing and painting with you~
I just love your instructional videos, your manor of teaching is so calm. I have already learned so many tips in only a few short video binge watching. I am new to watercolors, but totally hooked already!
Thank you so much! Always makes me so happy when my teaching style which is somewhat unique, I think as I go very slow and step-by-step. It’s how I learned best as well happy painting, and I’m so happy to have you here.🎨🌸
Thank you Debbie for doing what your doing. I'm a true beginner(panting for about 4 months) and have learned so much from you. I have done almost all of your tutorials and have enjoyed them immensely.
Im so glad I Could show in a way that makes sense for you~ I know for me I have to take my time, learn slowly and practice lots! Try this new tutorial as well, I think it may be helpful ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UkKxUG-TsCI.html Happy painting~
Thank you for this wonderful practice tutorial. I’m a beginner and this tutorial has taught me a great deal. Can’t wait for the second one. Thank you for all your tutorial videos. Can’t stop watching them. You’re a gem 💎 ❤
I’m So so glad this was helpful Here is my Beginners playlist there should be some good techniques and things in here for you. ru-vid.com/group/PLGvRyB1lQxymyefAW8WOtx6r2eouR3Zi6 I hope to continue to inspire and share all I know with you!
Wonderful, I do the same, consistency is the key piece to learning for me :-) I'm so happy this is helping. Happy practicing, the more familiar it becomes, the more you will begin enjoying this beautiful medium. I will keep reminding you, YOU are an artist friend, Have fun and most of all enjoy!
He he, I suppose thats where it comes from, I always do well, with inspiration, encouragement! I see everyone as artists for sure! Just different styles and looks :-) As long as you LOVE what you create thats where its at!
Please do! Im trying to share both beginners and a little more challenging videos maybe once a week so I can support both the beginners and those a bit more advanced. Keep practicing, warming up daily, and you will get better and better as you strengthen that muscle memory~ Most of all enjoy !
Thank you for a wonderful video. Very well explained, and perfect for a beginner like me. And I love your other videos too (and of course your beautiful finished artwork). 🥀
Thank you, I'm thrilled my Beginners Playlist is helping you. My goal is always to show how doable watercolors are with the right techniques and help. Welcome beginner! You are in for a beautiful journey~
I've been watercolor painting off and on for years but am never satisfied with the end product. This tutorial is going to help me soooo much. Yes I have done all of these painting but have never seen it as clearly and precise as you show it and explain what you are doing. You are one amazing teacher! Thank you so much for these lessons and videos. Hugs :)
Thank you! I’m So happy my teaching style Works for you it’s how Inlearned best so I naturally teach as such. I Love working with beginners too. Happy painting friend and keep having fun!
My pleasure! I remember decades ago my first "official" watercolor class in college and it was so foreign to me even though I had been playing with watercolors my entire life. The basics are many times over looked but can make a big difference, and take the trial and err period a bit shorter :-) Most of all play and have fun! The rest comes with practicing xo
Thank you Ann, I am so happy. My goal has been to create online courses, until I figure out the tech side of that and filming I am loving sharing with you. I hope it helps xo You are so encouraging and grateful I appreciate you
I try not too look at the numbers honestly.. I am living everyone’s excitement and learning, sharing their paintings with me and such wonderful support🌸 honestly had no idea how supportive and fun this would be five months ago. And you were one of the first Thank you for sticking with me🌸🎨
You're most welcome I hope they gave you some good insight and check out my playlist. I tried to put a lot of beginner tips and tricks and they’re happy painting, and most of all have fun.🌸🎨
Im so glad t his is helpful and my teaching style works for you. Keep practicing and developing that muscle memory you will get better and better! Happy painting and have fun "-)
This is great! I love warm ups before druving into painting! I can second the guarantee that practicing this daily will improve your skills as this is what I did in the beginning and still do as warm up. Debbie, I have enjoyed so much of your tips, tricks and teachings of watercolor! I do have a small request for a videos. There are a ton of watercolor artists on RU-vid and for the most part the basics are very similar but when it comes to water vs paint ratios everyone kinda has their own version of explanation. I would love to see a video on your version and how you label or call each one from mast tone all the way to most watered down, ie cream, butter, milk, tea, juicy, ect. I can certainly pick up on it from your videos as i have been painting for a few years, but it would be quicker if I know exactly what you call each and then in future videos when I hear you say tea, or milk I will know exactly what you mean by that vs what Jenna Rainey or Lindsay Weirich, mean by tea or milk. Thanks you're such a great teacher thanks for all your hard work!
That is a great question Let me sit with that and see if I can find a unique way to explain that. It’s such a feel I suppose Great invitation for me! Thank you stay tuned (I’m a tea drinker so I know exactly what I’m Wanting when I say yea lol)

My pleasure im so glad it helped! Its amazing how these exercies and warm ups can help and make such a difference. Happy painting friend, I hope to continue to inspire you. XO from California
Wonderful! This is a practice I still do daily. Warming up the fingers, developing muscle memory, next thing you know you sit down to paint a flower and you dont evenm have to think about it! Confidence... Have fun and enjoy~

Practice, practice. :-)
You got this! Iknow sounds simple, mundane, but I cant tell you how much this will improve your paintings and skills. I love playing with this. Have a fabulous Saturday friend. Always good to wake up to your ocmments :-)
Glad it was helpful! I hope you give it a daily try. I promise as boring and mundane as it sounds, you will be pleasntly surprised how wel it works, and will be a mnaster of watercolor flowers in no time!
Thank you so much, Debbie.
Hi Sassy, Since it is just watercolor I have a sink I pour it in, and rinse with warm water. I'm glad you are finding some helpful techniques I hope to continue to share with you Sassy!
Love your vidoes! Question: I thought wet on wet referred to a wet brush laying down on wet paper? You are showing a brush wet with water and paint on another color. What about wet on wet paper?
Hi Liz, wet on wet can be wet onto wet paper, and wet onto wet paint. Im so gald you are enjoying my tutorials. And thank you for your thoughts. Someitmes I also will rewet dry paint to make it dam p again, and then apply more wet paint onto that. This is something I enjoy with watercolors is when I apply another layer or "glaze" of watercolors the bottom layer will still show through with subtlty, and creates the most beautiful colors. I just love watercolors so much for these qualities. Happy painting
Hi here you are...2 WELL WATER Amazon link amzn.to/3KsHzRMm Meeden Direct Link - (For outside of US) bityl.co/KHILbityl.co/KGgQ Happy apinting, You will LOVE this water well..
Hi, I’m thank you for your question. I put all of these videos in my playlist for beginners. Here is the link for you. I know it was kind of confusing how I referred to these tutorials. I’m kind of new here and with so many things to keep track of and coordinate I’m getting better though.! Beginners playlist ru-vid.com/group/PLGvRyB1lQxymyefAW8WOtx6r2eouR3Zi6&si=kIhiYd4z-EZ_qHSj
Hi Beth, its an interesting distinction.. the value and the consistency. The more pgiment (80% pigment to 20% water) it can become much more opaque, thicker, creamier almost like melted ice cream. The lighter the value, (80% water to 20% pigment) the more water, transparency, and fluid, when applied to paper you can see the paper through the pigment. Yes, tea and water is similiar. Although again, subjective. Im referring to a hot cup of tea when I use tea consistency, vs coffee which might be creamier. Its all for me more of a feel for the paint, and playing with it so much that it becomes innate and intuitive. You have inspired me to talk more about this as its a really common question. I hope this helps~ I would sure ilke to be able to show and explain this better for everyone... Thanks for asking!
That’s a great question. It actually does go into the belly of the brush, but I always suggest working with damp brush versus a really wet brush, which is awfully hard for beginners.. I use both the point of the brush and the belly of the brush try to keep the pigment from going into the feral as it can ruin your brush if it gets down in there and it’s hard to clean out . I hope that helped and answered your question
I cater to beginners who ask for the why's and supplies etc. I am now adding time stamps to my videos for those of you more advanced so you can skip through my introductions that may not be helpful for you. Thank you for your feedback, I take all of it into consideration.
Debbie - do you ever use the smaller wells surrounding the inner larger wells at all? If so, do you fill them will tube paint for your palettes or are you using individual dabs of paint tubes as you paint each time and put them in the larger wells? I saw a paint pallet to the right (MeiLiang) Thanks!
I typically fill my wells with tube paint let them dry, wake them up by spraying paint on them each time I paint. Lately I’ve been using the MieLiang pallete But that isn’t my norm I hope that helps!
Appreciate the reply and that’s been my process as well. I ended up getting the Aristro paint set ( which I haven’t used yet) since the two MieLiang sets weren’t the correct ones. I pay full attention to your tutorials unlike doing so in class many moons ago;-)
@@stacydietzler9321 darn so sorry the MieLiangs didn’t work out. I love mine and actually just got the larger one with metallics to play with. I hope the Others work out for you. I’ve used WN since college so it was fun to branch out a bit :)
Thanks for your thoughts It sounds like my teaching style Just doesn’t work For you 😊 So many amazing teachers with different styles that may work better for you Thanks for stopping by!
Debbie, I can’t thank you enough for this opportunity you have given us to learn so much!!!. I can’t wait for the next tutorial, I have a feeling that the next will be just as informative. Love you!!. 🙏🏼❤️
Hi Kristina! You made my evening with your enthusiasm! I am thrilled to have you here. Happy painting, you are my kinda girl “binge watching” Watercolors! Paint in gf!
Very informative tutorial I need to practice these. I heard you mention that you do zoom classes do you have some information that I could check out. Thanks Debbie 😊❤
Hi Linda Yes I’d love to have you. I host one or two semi private classes per month (time permitting), up to five girls, we spend 30 mins on brushstrokes, colors, technique, then 60 mins painting. The next class is this Tuesday and it’s Peonies. I like these classes because it’s an opportunity to work much closer with you, paint with you , answer some questions, demonstrate. Here is a link bityl.co/KEpO I’d love to have you🌸🎨
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy this tues is not good for me because I only just heard of this and have an appointment on Tues. But I am definitely interested in future workshops! I will be looking for further dates definitely!!! I've never done one before and think that I am definitely ready for it! Thanks Debbie 😊
Wonderful, these practices will definitely be a great practice, help develop muscle memory and ultimately that confidence will soar! Happy practicing friend.
You are so welcome, I hope it was helpful. I know as a watercolor beginner there is so much to learn, it can be overwhelming. Paints, brushes, pigments, supplies, and then Technique! Baby steps, this is how I learned best, nice and slow :-) Happy painting, Keep practicing everyday you will get better!
Wonderful! You will not believe how quickly you improve and feel so much more confidence when you sit down to paint something! Happy painting friend, lets keep learning and creating together~
Thank you, this is so great. I feel like I need a class in how to mix the paints on my palette. I feel like I need a decent amount of water to rehydrate my paint but then somehow I have a watery soup and then I end up with all the puddles.
Hi Beth, Yes, that can definately be a conundrum, I would say first try a palette set with lots of colors premixed for you, Its why I love the MieLiang palette if you are a beginner mixing colors for me anyway, was a huge step and so much confusion. When I was learning, I first learned watercontrol, how to get that feel for my paint consistency, then start learning to mix your colors, (which btw, is SO fun) I do offer privates if you like, to get one on one guidance in watercontrol. Once you get that, it is a game changer but does take practice to develop that ability to feel and sense consistencies. Once you get it, it never goes away though! Here is also a video on water control. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UkKxUG-TsCI.htmlsi=PfJLqZKMYI4HdQav TIP- I spray my paints with water and let the spray activate my paint for a few minutes before I begin painting. :-) Happy painting! Let me know how I can further support you, watercolors is magic when you learn the basics ~
Thank you for all your lessons for beginners. I have gotten intimidated by videos from wonderful artists, but go so fast that I don't understand how they accomplish it. 29:11
You are so welcome! Im glad you are able to follow my tutorials and they are helpful. Happy painting friend I hop;e to continue to inspire and share with you~
