So I feel like Ranting so let's Rave 1) That goddamn tiny ass D-Pad. Sure, 3D games were all the rage, but then 2D games got absolutely screwed 2) The sticks. Why make two different sized and colored sticks when you can insert doubles of one? 3) 3 shoulder buttons instead of 4. I mean why? 4) Face buttons were good for some games but others, like traditional fighters, got messed up by the layout 5) Since then, Nintendo realized their error and went back to even button layouts with various stick layouts for their pro gamepads in the following generations (PS bottom inline stick for the Wii, a top inline stick layout for Wii U (this one was trash as well), and then the Xbox offset stick layout for the Switch) So yeah, here's my more extended hot take on the GC gamepad being trash

Characters in the game are considered to be better or worse than they actually are because of reps. Sonic and Cloud aren't as good as people say they are, but Sonix and Sparg0 are just that good at the game that people think they're really op. Sonic is probably around 5th best, not top 2, and Cloud is somewhere near 20th. If Sparg0 mained Joker and Sonix mained Pac-Man you'd probably see the same discourse around those characters that you see now.

My hot take: Kazuya isn't top 15 He's DLC little mac, but he's still little mac. Get your ass on a platform or zone him out, forcing him to approach, then punish said approach, and abuse his dogshit disadvantage. He has zero safe pokes or threatening ranged attacks, he can't even touch most sword characters. He's also the only character in the game with a 7 frame jumpsquat, which opens up plenty of Kazuya specific block setups. He literally can't jump out of Robs down tilt on shield and he's forced to roll, essentially turning it into a 50/50 (roll in or roll out) and if you guess wrong you get Rob'd. Wavedashing through attacks is fake, his recovery is exploitable, the only thing he has going for him is EWGF and big combos.

1. Shiek is top 5. Tweek was onto something. That character has little to no weaknesses 2. Sonic is undoubtedly better than Steve. Steve is a gimmick character. He has a less consistent gameplan, 1 millionth of the speed of Sonic in a game where speed is important, and he has a worst matchup spread. 3. Basically 90% of tier list opinions are formed by tournament results and people need to think for themselves/realise when it’s the player VS when it’s the character

Mashing and sdi should be removed from the game. It A: Breaks the flow of your inputs, changing the way you play from methodical to frantic, and B: Puts much more wear and tear on your controller than is reasonable. I'm positive Nintendo puts mashing in games so you buy more controllers.

Lucas is top 10 at least and the most underrated character in the game. He has top 5 edge guarding with dair and pk thunder, a really busted combo game(if you don’t believe me look up his nair loops, dair loops, zair loops, upair loops, and drag downs), really solid killing options, top 5 shield pressure(fair is minus 2, zair is minus 3 and is especially busted with djcz, down tilt is really s afe, ftilt is really safe), a FASTER VERSION OF A MELEE WAVE DASH(it’s called snake dashing, look it up), a true zero to death out of frame 4 foot stool out of shield(it’s called footstool djcz) and just a great out of shield option in footstool djc which combos into what ever he wants, really early kill confirms(basic dair loops will kill confirm at 67% on normal weight characters), very good spacing(fair and djcz), a great recovery, and serviceable zoning. His neutral is insane because of djcz being a solid approach option with pk fire to call out approaches and snakedashing to mix up his ground movement(reminder that this A BETTER MELEE WAVEDASH in a game where NO ONE ELSE CAN), his advantage state is crazy with combos that when optimized go from 0-80 or 40-death, and his “weaknesses” are all greatly exaggerated. People say he struggles to anti air but idj upair and nair are really fast callout options. They say his landing game sucks but his air mobility is great and fair has so much range that it’s not hard to out space people, and he has the longest airdodge in the in the game. His only real weakness is that he can sometimes get platform camped. Characters with way more mild strengths and exploitable weaknesses are regularly considered top 10 so why isn’t Lucas? The only reason is that he is an unpopular character and people don’t want to put in the work to get results, which is why many of the “best characters” are in reality easy characters like gnw, Steve, rob, pythra, cloud.

Hot take 1: People gaslight themselves about characters that are good on paper vs in practice and swore for years Pikachu was the best character in the whole game. They drank the Kool-aid Pokemon Company provided and put themselves in a mental haze for over 5-6 years. Hot Take 2: We wouldn't need to ban Steve or Sonic if Americans didn't have stage lists that make Steve and Sonic menaces to fight on. We have counterpicking, DSR, and gentlemans for a reason. Use them, and allow stages that make Sonics and Steves and whoever more uncomfortable. Bring back Lylat you cowards! Hot Take 3: Make the Timer 5 mins so time outs are a viable option for more characters in the cast, and that we can go home earlier. Every single tournament wraps up faster than smash ultimate. Hell, Pokemon VGC takes a shorter time for their game than an Ultimate game or even a set.

My hot take: Smash Bros tier Lists are pretty useless.

To me, saying that Lucina is still better than Marth in 2024 seems pretty tame for a hot take. So... here, I think I have an actual one : compared to Lucina, Marth isn't fun to play. Getting tippers gets less and less fun the more you get used to hitting them, but missing them because you're out here trying to catch this one tiny pixel opponents can dodge (when Roy unfairly gets random sweet spots even if he doesn't hit from the base of his blade) doesn't ever stop being annoying. Contrarily to Lucina, playing Marth also gives you the impression you can't play aggressively, and this prevents you to appreciate fighting fast characters because of how hard they can be to hit with tippers. Lucina doesn't care about that, as she's always rewarded for hitting her opponents. Unfortunately though, Marth isn't, and while Roy ending stocks with sour spots is funny, it's a horrendous feeling to do that with Marth.

sonic and steve are arguable for top 1 and 2 in the game. And people wanna ban both? Why? Like, There was a case back in mid 2022 where no one knew how to fight steve. But now, with people like miya, sparg0, hurt beating acola, and A LOT of players beating onin. I see no reason why steve now should be banned. The arguable top 2 steve players lost against other top players. Plus, neo brought acola to a game 5, shadic, shinymark and others beat onin. So steve isn't a centralized character, is he broken? Yeah, do the players care? Yeah, and what do they do? They just get better, yeah they might complain here and there. But at the end of it, just getting better beats steve players, like all characters. And if you wanna ban a character for being boring. Sonic would've been long gone banned. If it's boring, then sorry. It's for real money.

Why the hell would you ban fan favorite characters like cloud or diddy just because they have good results? All this would achieve would be to make the meta even more saturated with campy ass mid-low tier zoners and instakill the competitive scene at all levels. You'd honestly be better off banning the bottom 30 characters from the game. I think EE was spitting when he said the bracket randomness caused by all the low tier heroes upsetting players like sparg0 and gluto is destroying storylines and only benefitting players like acola and miya whose characters effortlessly stomp mid tiers.
