Talking of the possible future value of bikes. I think the better way of looking at it is, if you can buy a bike that you love second hand for a reasonable price that you can afford, then just keep it well maintained and enjoy it. Basically most bikes will reach a value which bottoms out and won’t drop below. Therefore you avoid the biggest cost of vehicle ownership which is depreciation. That way the cost of maintenance etc is your only annual cost. If you strike lucky and your bike eventually goes up in value again then that’s great but if you love it you’re not going to sell so it’s immaterial. Just enjoy your bike and ride it, happy in the knowledge your pleasure/ passion is not draining your bank each month 😊

A passion for motorbikes, not mechanical ability or common sense makes me ride in all weathers and long miles, it makes me choose the bike not the car, put up with all sorts of discomfort because i'm on 'my' bike and we always make it to our destination, we feel things we couldn't in a car and travel roads just for the sake of being together, regardlaess of the danger, laws and whether it was made to do what we want it to. I love your passion Freddie, never lose it.

Wonderful to hear nice things said about the California. We love our '03 (with hydraulic valves). Owned her for 3 years, twice back to the factory in Mandello. Handles like a boss. Yes, speedo failed, replaced the internals with those of a ducati sp2 speedo.. Not a perfect bike by any means, but we'll never sell her 😊

Perfect response to Giancarlo Freddie. I wonder if he is a biker at all. To call the V7 old garbage or the EVO motor needing a lot of maintenance is just plain ignorant. Both of those brands are iconic, deservedly so. Just as Triumph, BSA, Norton, Royal Enfield, BMW, Honda, et al are as well. Passion is the key.

Freddie, you are right about values dropping., or not increasing but it depends on the vehicle. an original Kawasaki Z900 has values of between £20 and £30K. Similarly, original sandcast engine Honda CB750s have values well above £10K. However, I have a 1978 Honda CB750 F2 SOHC. It is probably only worth about £2-£3K max. It is not 100% original as exhausts are hard to find. However, whenever I take it for a ride, I am almost always approached by somebody who used to have one or used to lust after one, or who just remembers seeing them on the road. It is a great conversation starter, but this never translates into additional value. Hey ho, perhaps meeting new people has better value at the end of the day?

Agree entirely with the Moto Guzzi California. Stopped at the level crossing in Manningtree last week and got talking to a chap with a 1998 California on a T plate. No issues and a beautiful bike. Freddie go to America. My friend loaned me his Yamaha Virago for a while and twice it got kicked onto its side in car parks over a 3 month period in Texas. This was 30 years ago, but the Harley thing must still go on.

The BSA Rocket Gold Star 650 you featured is a twin and is not in the same league of value and collectability as the true Gold Star single-cylinder models . Have a look at a DBD34 Gold Star 500cc single, you'll find that they are a lot more pricey. This is the model which the new Gold Star 650 is styled on. The original BSA never made a 650 single.

As a Moto Guzzi California Audace 1400 owner I must admit the reason why they keep their values is because they are amazing. They ride break and handle more like a big Japanese muscle bike rather than a cruiser ( gsx1400 or xjr 1300 or CB1300 ) service is every 6000 miles oil filter plus valves but hey it's a Guzzi so they are sticking out like on a BMW boxer. The big block Guzzi engine is a gem. You can ride the torque from 2500-4000rpm or you can keep spinning it and get in to the power band from 4500-7000rpm this 90 degree 1380cc engine just rips(and this is coming from someone who used to track a GSXR1000 and sold it to buy my Audace! Change the dif oil every time you change the back tyre and that is it. Massive plus they have all the modern electric aids so abs 3 stage traction control ( that can be switched off for burnouts) and cruise control from standard plus 3 riding modes pioggia (rain cuts power by 1/3 makes very soft throttle response I use it as eco mode on motorways) turismo( every day riding full power but still soft throttle response) and veloce ( sport aggressive throttle response most fun ) 21 litre tank can last from 130miles when You ride it like You stole it up to 250 miles plus in pioggia with cruise control set at 65mph. And the best thing is they there are only a handful of them on the road! So if You ever gonna be in the south east of England and You would like to sample the biking biggest secret give ma a shout @audac_rider and we can make it happen

Spot on with your retort about including passion. For most of us in North America or Europe, without passion, most motorcycles would fail the sensibility test. In urban settings, scooters would probably trump everything else. And outside the cities safety and practicality would lean to small cars. But throw in passion and the spectrum of bikes makes sense.

Worth also factoring in the impact of inflation, have owned the same classic car since 1998 and has gone up in value probably by a factor of 4 times or more. Part of that is spares costs due to availability etc, but the bigger factor is purely driven by inflation over that period.

I agree with you mate; passion is the most important factor for me as well. Motorcycling for me is all about enjoyment, not commuting; a bike is a toy, not just a utility. So I kind of do understand people taking a more rational approach to purchasing a motorcycle. I do that with cars: 100% rational. But bikes? Hell no.

Like many others here, I'm in complete agreement about passion Freddie! If it weren't about the feeling riding gives me, common sense tells me I ought to just buy a sensible car instead. I ride my motorcycle daily, don't even own a car anymore. Bought the Harley Davidson Lowrdier ST, and was that the sensible purchase? No definitely not 😂! But the joy I feel every day when I ride it makes it the right vehicle for me. I'm actually looking at buying a second bike as a backup/bad weather bike, and I thought about the more "sensible" bikes to purchase. But my heart wants the Triumph Scrambler 900 over any of the more sensible bikes, so that's the one I'll get

The thing about value is that currency is always inflating so sellers (not flippers) are usually making some sort of profit on older vehicles even if they are selling it back at "market value" because they probably paid a lot less back when they bought it. The guy selling the vintage bonny probably got it for less than $2.5k if he's had it for more than 6-10 years and the guy before him is still making a profit too, and this is assuming no restorations were done either.

Passion is great put passion can be had with practicality and dependability. What you describe is marrying an exotic dancer because ‘she loves you’. There will be a good market for iconic classic motorcycles surviving in small numbers for the foreseeable future but otherwise I agree with your generational thesis. For example, people who actually rode bikes in the 1960’s are well into their 70’s now. Yes there are younger people interested in bikes of that era but their numbers won’t replace that earlier generation - the demand will fall for many “classic” bikes that were in many cases pretty ordinary bikes in their day and so the price will reduce, eventually 🇬🇧

Freddie, you have to factor in the fact that any vehicle rarity and desirability of the original car or bike determines the value. Mass production will never produce high value. You shouldn’t buy any vehicle as an investment. If you get lucky, brilliant, but as everyone says “Remember the value of any investment can go down as well as up!!”. Drive it and enjoy it

If what's in your garage doesn't make your heart beat a little faster, it's most definitely the wrong bike. 😂😂

Value lies in scarcity like coins . The age does not make it valuable but the amount produced that year or like in bikes how many of a model was produced over the production period of a certain model. 🆒😎👍.

Riding a bike it´s all about joy and freedom. Unless you work for Uber, then in this case just buy something reliable and cheap. Owning a bike for me is having something that makes me happy and worth having.

Unless you're a mega rich collector, a future classic and the value of it is almost irrelevant. For the vast majority vehicles are too expensive to be ornaments.

Only buy a bike to ride it. If you break even reselling it you have done well. Save a fortune on valve clearance checks: buy some feeler gauges and check them yourself. Your Aussie subscriber is right. I've been stunned by Aprilia forums where people who have bought 15 grand superbikes baulk at the cost of brake fluid. If cost is an issue buy a cheaper bike so you can afford to keep it well maintained. Numbskulls. And your anti Guzzi guy is wrong. My 85 Le Mans 1000 is fantastic, reliable and a joy to ride. The guzzi V twin goes forever. Bi rebuild needed for hundreds of thousands of miles. You just need to service them more frequently than modern bikes. But, and it's a big but, you can do the servicing yourself. I stripped down and reassembked a Le Mans 850 in my garage with no previous knowledge of the Goose. Just a manual is all you need.

The only thing worse than a V-Strom 650 is having to drive a car. Life is just too short to ride boring bikes. The SV650 is a 🍑 though.

regarding the comment about how the price of a bike dies with its generation. i believe that any older bike could become a classic, its just that nobody wants to buy them, getting them serviced and/or repaired is too costly. mechanics at the moment charge first rate fares for second rate jobs, and its killing the passion of younger, lower earning riders too. Additionally, i think a bike actually gains value once the equivalent generation of owners die. People’s appreciate thing more once something is gone. The bikes arent gone persay, but the era and people are.

YES!!! It’s the passion! Nothing about having a bike is rational! If you want to be rational, safe and cheap, buy a Toyota Corolla! I own a Harley because it puts the most massive smile on my face, not because it’s an intelligent choice!

It’s not the speedo, it’s usually the front wheel gear drive.

Not with mine, it was the worm gear inside the speedo 😅

Not sure about lifetime value, but if it last a lifetime, you’ve got you money’s worth. I think today’s inflation kills kills that theory.

Passion! There is no common sense with passion. They are mutually exclusive. Without passion what are you left with? A Toyota Corolla. 😂

What's all this about not servicing your bike, instead throwing them away for such a simple operation like valve gaps. If you ,like most , think the dealer costs are prohibitive, learn to do it your self. How can people talk about passion for a bike that they will bin off for the sake of a few minutes work.
