FOR FELLOW ADD/ADHD SUFFERERS (yes, I was diagnosed with ADD by a professional) tips I have found out: If you are on medication for it, take a day off from the meds (only on days you don't have anything important scheduled), allow yourself to wind down, be your natural quirky self, you will also have a better night sleep. REMEMBER TO EAT! Adderall and other stimulate meds used for ADD/ADHD suppress your appetite! Set reminders on your phone for important events! Caffeine helps a bit with focusing! so drink that coffee or tea! Have a creative outlet! people like us normally are more creative than the average person! be it music, art, comedy, whatever lets you express yourself! Ignore the jerks who make ADD/ADHD jokes, this also means don't punch them... even if you want to. Remember to take care of yourself.
@missvisibleninja
@missvisibleninja 7 лет назад
If you do decide to take a day off meds (which you totally should its really relaxing and recharges you) do it with a consistent schedule. I for example dont take my adderall on the weekends. But if you take it inconsistently it will wreck havoc on your system. In my 12+ years of taking adderall I have learned that if you don't take it for 5+ days and then do take it your body will stop being hungry and stop being tired. There was one time a couple years ago when I didnt take my adderall for the entire summer and then took it every other day for band camp and I did not want to eat or sleep for a week and a half. For a week and a half my body was neither hungry nor tired. Do not do what I did. it sucks a lot.

I have ADD. When i was a little kid at school, i was kind off a perfectionist. I sometimes froze and said nothing in class when i had to say the answer. that was really bothering and i got distracted VERY, VERY easily. I even got bullied because i was very different. I had no friends. It became a REAL PROBLEM when i was 7/8. One day, 3 bullies locked me up in class. I even cried for help! That's the part when i met a girl called Annie. She noticed my screaming and crying and unlocked the door. Since then, we were besties for more then 4 years up until now. 2 years later the bullying (FINALLY) stopped, i was something like 9. I even talked in class about it, and after 2 YEARS of holding it a secret with Annie, they got punished! (HOORAY!) And instead of reacting on their stupid actions, i forgave them for whatever they have done to me. And it WORKED! 1 off them (May) even became friends with me! Now i am just very happy i told my teacher. I finally have REAL friends, that won't care about my ADD. :)
@daivens4342

Nice dude, i have ADD too, and i was super distracted during classes too, and talked to everyone like of they were my friends, but bcs i was so happy and energetic, and thought that they were laughing about the stuff i did, but they were laughing at me. And i even got bullied during one whole year by those motherfucking twins, they even beated me up sometimes, my mother would struggle at our principal to do something and the max that our principal did was suspend them for 1 week. But after that year, i moved to other school, where some friends i knew like my cousin were there too, and they aways understood and explained my situations to people that would start bullying me. And also, last year (i'm 16 now), i was diagnosed as Autistic too, so... Welp, that kinda explains a lot too lol

I was diagnosed pretty late, not until last summer (I'm 15). I hate it when people are like "I bet I have adhd because I don't feel like doing homework". It's so much more than that. It's forgetting everything, it's losing even the most important things, it's feeling like you are physically unable to get tasks done. It's having directions explained to you five times over, and STILL not understanding them, and zoning out through entire lectures. It's failed tests you studied hours for, writing essays at 5 am, and rambling on and on. ADD isn't laziness. It's a real thing that people struggle with, and more awareness needs to be raised about it
@wu1ming9shi

I can only imagine your frustration. I bet that it really makes you feel dumb that people have to eplain things over and over again. Yeah, people need to know more about this form of ADD too.

I'm 14 and I wanna see if I do have it, because I took this quiz and answered yes to every question except for two but I can't remember which ones at the moment. (I know that this quiz doesn't mean that I have A.D.D. but I think it's very likely) I have friends that say "Oh yeah I'm totally ADHD when I'm around my friends cuz I never get anything done ahaha" but that kinda annoys me. How should I bring it up to my parents? Because they just think I'm lazy but it's almost impossible for me to pay attention, stay on top of things like homework, and I forget A LOT of things all of the time.
@MacyTosh

Maya Goosmann I hear you I struggle with this everyday and being in grade 12 makes it harder hnng ;-; I really hate school because of this, I get frustrated almost everyday from something and it's so draining. oh what also pisses me off is when teachers say, "oh you have ADHD and dyslexia heh everyone does now a days stop making stuff up " it pisses me off cause then I have to go find the files and documents from red ladder the place I was tested and bring it to them although seeing there face when I do is kind of like sweet revenge.

SomeRandomPerson absolutely!! adhd is often comorbid with other mental illnesses/disorders, and many adhders develop anxiety as a sort of maladaptive coping mechanism for their adhd symptoms. if you struggle with impulses, social anxiety will often keep that in check since ur too afraid to act out or say something weird in front of people.

I do have a challenge, something I was tested for years ago. Point your index fingers towards each other and with your right hand spin your finger clockwise, at the same time with your left hand spin your finger counter clockwise. (use of waists are allowed) If you're doing this right they should meet at opposite sides of the circle twice in each rotation. This is a form of I.Q. test that I've never seen anyone but myself complete.

I'm an introvert. I hate being around people, exempting a very few. However, I come off as loud and brash because I have a rather short temper when it comes to loud noice, and my classrooms are very loud. I've yelled at everyone in the school, and when I'm not yelling, I'm making jokes. I usually make jokes to hide my emotions, because I have severe anxiety and depression. People think of me as rude, funny, and weird, but I'm actually really shy, and sweet to close friends. It sucks.

A big part of ADHD/ADD is the extreme of focus. Most of the time people associate ADD with the lack of ability to focus but that is not completely true. Instead, ADD pushes your focusing ability to the extreme. This means either you are focusing on everything or you 'hyper-focus' on one thing. There are many people that make the joking claim that they have ADD because they cannot focus long enough to read books. As someone with ADHD this is just not true, sure sometimes it is hard to focus on a book but when I do I often end up reading them in one or two sittings after accidentally staying up all night without noticing the time. People with ADHD can focus but often cannot control whether they are focusing on one thing or everything and this leads to missing things such as where we put our phone. The advantage of this is that we handle stressful situations well and when we do 'hyper-focus' we can often get a large amount of work done in a short amount of time. Whether that work is editing, writing, reading, running, etc... To those who are recently diagnosed I would say: Know that ADHD/ADD is not a curse though it can sometimes seem that way. There are advantages of having ADHD as well as disadvantages. The ability to think differently means that you will accel at certain tasks and you will find things that you do enjoy. Most importantly educate yourself, there is a lot of misinformation out there touted as "common knowledge". When you can better understand why you are the way you are that is when you can really take advantage of the good parts of having ADHD and can better deal with the worse parts. Also how ADHD affects you will change as you age and it does affect guys and girls differently. If you have ADHD/ADD talk to a specialist specifically about medication. Taking medication is not the same as admitting defeat or admitting that you are wrong or broken. It is a potential tool to help you just like a pencil, chainsaw or phone. There is no one pill that is good for everyone. The most talked about medication is adderall but it does not help everyone. For example adderall does not work for me because it makes my mild turrets not so mild so instead, I take a different medication, but only on days that I need it such as school days or job interviews. There is no pill that will instantly solve all of your issues but there will likely be one that will help with minimal side effects. I hope everyone has a good day. :)

dave c that reading bit is really relatable to me. I'm 16 and have often struggled with the symptoms of adhd but not even known about them untill I did some research cause I was curious but I haven't been diagnosed professionally and I don't know how to talk to my parents about it because they will probably think I'm overreacting and being stupid.
@davec8385
@davec8385 7 лет назад
This is a tough situation and I do not have a definitive answer but I would recommend talking to your school counselor. They are hired to help students and would likely have the resources to help with a diagnosis or at least help you approach your parents. I would most definitely recommend talking to your parents about your concerns. Mabey if you do some research it could help you talk to them. I don't know what your parents are like or what your relationship is with them and I am any sort of professional so take this advice with a grain of salt but I wish you the best. Have a good day.

I really hate having ADHD I'm on Concerta and Ritalin for it and even worse I'm in high school my friends keep undermining and bullying me about it. because I have a loss of appetite I'm really skinny so they spread a rumour about me being anorexic and none of them will come near me and I wouldn't be surprised. I go to a performing arts high school and my class were all dancers they were so bitchy. I have only brought one friend from that yr 7 class into yr 8. my old class convinced them to stay away from my and that worked. When i forget to take my medication I get really bad and cannot concentrate for more than 5 seconds. I have new friends though.

Arwen Davidson Wow, I can't believe people would do that to you, it's not fair to make fun of someone because of something they didn't have control over, it wasn't your choice to be diagnosed with a mental disorder. Yet they bully/bullied you because of that. Unless there's something wrong in their lives (family issues, abuse, etc), and their doing it because they want to for fun, then I think that's pathetic to do that to someone under those circumstances. So in short, I'm saying it's messed up to do that to someone, and you shouldn't have to deal with that kind of stuff.

Hey Jack, I think the way you approached this topic was really great and sensitive. I notice that you talk about all mental illnesses this was and I really appreciate that. I also liked how you talked about it's not necessarily how many of these symptoms that you have, its how interfering in your life these symptoms are. All in all, the quiz seemed pretty fair. Good job at picking a good one. I know there are a lot of bad ones out there.

Nicole B I can agree on that. Too many people like to use mental illnesses as adjectives for everyday use. When I was REALLY young i was diagnosed with ADD, Dyslexia, and Epilepsy, and Pain-Induced Anxiety. It's been fucking rough, as my Epilepsy has calmed down to none or one seizure a year my ADD thrives. I'm in school, and some kid was blurting out random crap, as people my age normally do, and he had mentioned 'like dyslexic people don't see colors' My expression turned to a face of grotesque, then my blurting out and interrupting conversations symptom of ADD came through immediately correcting him, while it was the kindest thing I could have done, this kid was pretty nasty toward me in the classes we had together. I have a friend who suffers from ADHD, really badly, It's hard for her, but she gets through it. Here are some tips for people with any of the things I have: If you have anxiety: Stay calm, and breathe, breathing is one of the most important things you can do in this situation, If you suffer attacks at home, hold a comfort item,like a pet, orfocus your attention somewhere else. If you have ADD/ADHD: Staying focused is hard, but my tip for you is taking a bit of time off of what your doing when you start to feel distracted or fidgety, take a breather and stretch, or play a game, it can help you gain the want to continue what you were doing. If you have dyslexia: Dyslexia is something that can be really bad, both socially and academically, but going slow and understanding what you are learning or doing is key, once you understand the concept you will get it and start getting a faster pace. and for people with epilepsy: When experiencing an attack, breath, and close your eyes, stay calm, and once the cause is over it is best for you to take a breather and seriously rest a bit. For everyone who experiences mental disorders your are not the only one, and you don't have to feel like you are, and when you look for it,you can fi places and people that can help you.

Jack, I am professionally diagnosed with ADHD. I can tell one when I see one, believe me :) But it really is not a disaster if you actually are hyperactive. Look where you've got since 2012 - the success that some people can only dream of. People love you, and your content is amazing, thought out and top quality. Even if you do struggle with something, it's barely visible. People love you exactly for how many connections, and tangents, and thoughts you attach to your every experience. People with ADHD tend to be hypercreative aswell. So I think it's done you a service if anything :) As for me, I take medications because without them I simply cannot learn. Anything that is lengthy and complex my brain dismisses, if I am not on meds. College is tough for "normal" people, but with ADHD it's hell on earth. I was toughing through it until on my Sophomore year I almost completely failed my whole quarter of classes. And not because I wasn't trying - the amount of stress I was under also doomed me into the worst depression I've ever had (considering I also have a hypothyroid condition that makes me prone to depression), and I really considered giving up on life at one point. And then I thought - enough. And went to seek help. Now I am fine, and doing good in my studies. Still not really close to graduation, but at least I am conquering advanced calculus, which I couldn't do before. I definitely changed as a person because of that, but I think it was a change for the better. For me, finding out that I had ADHD and finding treatment for it was life-saving. But remember, it's always up to you to decide. Diagnosis is not a sentence. You're the only one who can truly evaluate its importance, and you should never forget that.

This is a great comment! I have learned in my life that people with ADHD need someone in their life to go behind them and put out the fires. My father and husband both have ADHD (dad has the hyperactivity, hubby doesn't). All they needed was someone to come alongside them and encourage their creativity while managing the stuff that they may not be able to on their own. For example, my husband wants to be a drummer professionally, but as we just got married he doesn't have his own drumset (he had been using his dad's). He is saving for his own kit but only because I am managing our budget and purposefully saving money every month for it. He is not that organized, so without my organization he probably would not be saving as much as he is for his kit. The people that I know with ADD/ADHD are some of the most hard-working people I know and they can get so much done when they are doing something they are passionate about. Jack's passion is his channel, so he works very hard to get things done for it. I am glad that you are doing well in your studies. My husband ended up getting enough classes for an associate's degree but could not continue because he was having such a hard time. I think people need to realize that it's okay not to get a degree and to go into a field that does not necessarily require a degree. Our generation has lost the value of being an artist or working with your hands. Keep working hard in school, but never forget that if you find a passion that takes you outside of school don't be afraid to pursue it!

As a person who deals with ADHD/ADD daily and has done so for years... I appreciate that you found a quiz that (while not as reliable or in depth as a legitimate psychological analysis) doesn't just ask about the stereotypic behavioral issues people associate with ADHD/ADD. People say "Oh people that say they have ADHD/ADD are just lazy or hyperactive and use it as an excuse", but it's really not. It's a legitimate disorder that makes functioning as a normal person incredibly difficult. Our brains just don't work the same way as most people's do, and because of that we don't see the world or social situations in the same way. There's so much negative stigma associated with ADHD/ADD because of people not understanding that it's not just laziness or hyperactivity, that people brush it off as something that isn't a big deal, when in reality it makes life more challenging. Doing well in school/college, getting and maintaining a job, and even building meaningful relationships is a genuine struggle.. So I want to thank you Jack, for not treating that quiz like it was a joke. :) Even if it wasn't your intention, I'm happy that someone who watches this video will see that ADHD/ADD isn't just an excuse. It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but to someone who has to deal with it every day it means a lot.

I know for sure that I have ADHD and Autism, and something that annoys me is when people refer to someone having Autism as an insult, just because I have autism doesn't mean I necessarily fit the typical autism stereotype, what most people don't understand about autism is that it's a spectrum disorder which means that the way my autism works is almost definitely different than what someone else with Autism can have and if I sat down and took the time and resources to sit down and edit videos myself, I would upload a video just bringing awareness to Autism and how it effects me

I have a weird and probably slightly rude question: what does it feel like to have autism? I've been hearing a lot more about it lately, and I'm starting to think it may need to be taken into consideration as a possible cause of some of my mood and communication issues. My mom won't take me to get tested because I wasn't "slow" as a baby. Also, I agree with the spectrum thing. I think there needs to be a spectrum for ADHD too. Like "Hyperactive Disorder", "Inattentive Disorder", "Disorganization Disorder", ect.

hey +rockercaterrorencountered its an interesting topic to bring up but there really isnt a feeling about it its how the mind is affected by your surroundings and the way you see things is completely different from an average person ranging from sensory issues to hating doing certain things that most people would find odd or having habits that are strange and i do have autism (high functioning) and it does have advantages and disadvantages all the time

I used to be one of those people that chuckled to myself when I would hear a RU-vidr make a mistake in talking. However, recently I started my own RU-vid channel. Since then, I have seen the difficulty with commentary during game-play. It is easy to accidentally say the wrong words when you have most of your thought process dedicated to a game. I find it genuine when I hear that kind of stuff now. It seems forced, and lacks personality when you are perfect. Your mistakes are what make you great! Love you Sean! You rock.

Person with Adhd and psychology student here. While this quiz can give you helpful info, what determines if you need to see a professional in most psychological disorder cases is called "clinically significant distress" this means you or someone else recognizes that these symptoms are some how impairing your ability function. From what Jack was describing he might have some symptoms of adhd, but he does cope with them and it doesn't appear to be distressing him. I have always had adhd, and my parents helped me make coping mechanisms, which worked very well until the stress of college overwhelmed me. Basic point. Know yourself, know when to listen to those around you, know you can ask for help.

Also it is just ADHD, not ADD. People can be more hyperactive (typical ADHD) or inattentive (what people would think is ADD) or both. DSM5 assesses for both of these which is why the survey was split into two parts (and if I remember correctly, you need to meet the requirements for one or the other, along with significant distress, to be diagnosed).

I was diagnosed with A.D.D. 6 years ago and got put on Adderall. I quit taking it because I was having massive migraines and essentially hillucinating. since Adderall is basically meth, I figured it was for the best anyways. now I use nicotine and it helps just as much as the Adderall but without the side effects. is that because of the chemical it is, or is it kinda the same psychological factor of it being a coping mechanism?
@nsynclancefan

Russ Seidel i dont think nicotine has the same effect on the brain as adderall, so i think it is a coping mechanism. I dont think it is helping control your adhd, but everyone is different.

I have been diagnosed with ADHD since I was in the second grade, so I've known about it and my symptoms for years. I was surprised with how accurate this quiz was because it's incredibly correct, and it even corrected some misconceptions I had with my ADHD about some symptoms that I thought was caused by my dyslexia instead. This was a great tool for those who need a reason to see if they need a diagnosis from a doctor.

I've been professionally diagnosed with ADHD and school was almost impossible before I was diagnosed. I remember sitting at my kitchen table for hours and crying over simple homework worksheets. It was physically impossible to pay attention and get things done. I would constantly fidget and couldn't sit still. I would get so frustrated and I always felt insecure about my grades and how bad I was at school. I often compared myself to the other kids. I also didn't have many friends I just didn't fit in. Insomnia and anxiety are also tied in with this. But now I'm better and I get straight A's. School is much easier and I find that the older I get and the more mature I get the easier it is to deal with. Insomnia and anxiety are still there but I've learned how to live with both. I also have an amazing group of friends. Just remember not to let your ADHD get you down and that I can get better. You shouldn't feel ashamed of yourself in anyway. Even if it does make doing things a bit harder it's still a part of who you are. I've learned that having a creative outlet helps a lot. Things like art, music, and writing have really helped me. Try to get as much sleep as you can and eat well because that helps to.

I get frustrated when some people take ADD/ADHD as a joke. Like when they get distracted they will laugh and tease that they have ADHD when they don't. It's a serious mental disorder that affects a lot of people! It's not some thing to laugh about, it would be like laughing at someone's sweater that their deceased grandma made them! Don't feckin' laugh about that!!! When someone asks if I have it, I just tell them maybe, because I haven't gotten an official diagnosis, but I do relate to many of the symptoms. That is a respectable way to answer if you suspect you have it, but haven't had an official diagnosis.

Thank you, I'm glad you understand. I have ADD and have been officially diagnosed, it gets really annoying when random people will just say they have it when they really have no idea or they don't even understand what ADD can even be. It can be very complex and encompass many things, not just lack of attention. Its good you say maybe, and at least you know more about it than most people. Your school might offer free official testing for it. Otherwise it can be a few hundred dollars. But that kind of testing will tell you any type of disability you might have and also exactly how your brain works and how advanced each portion of it is.

I've been on medication for ADHD since the age of 6, and I'm only just starting to feel comfortable with the idea of weaning off it at the age of 22. It really is crazy to see the vast difference in how you act on and off medication, for better or for worse. I have had my moments of questioning which person is the "real" me, the medicated docile shy girl, or the unmedicated loud absentminded girl. It's taken me a long time to come to terms with the fact that who I am isn't based on whether I am on or off my medication. How I choose to present myself to others determines the person I am, and there is nothing worse than feeling a wave of guilt and anxiety over missing a day because you concede defeat. It isn't easy, it takes work to push through the fog and get through each day to be the best person you can be. But for anyone struggling with ADHD who thinks they may be a little crazy...we're all a little crazy inside, some just hide it better than others. You're all beautiful and worth the effort.
