These brake sensors sound crazy. If you were driving a stick shift car, your right foot would move between the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal. There is no brake sensor thee. Just as you would luft your right leg off the gas pedal and press the brake pedal, effectively cutting off the gas to the engine, you would do the same with your right hand fingers, I.e. remove from the accelerator and grab the brake lever, cutting off the power to the wheels. In this sense, a finger activated press type accelerator wold be the best since the finger will have to be removed to grab the hand brake in ebike.

It's not worth it to install these brake sensors. Not sure why they haven't figured out that many hydraulic brakes levers were not designed to move the same ways as the brake sensors were designed to work with! The trick is to program the mid drive motor to immediately stop delivering power when you stop pedaling! Don't we by instinct stop pedaling when we are about to hit something?

All you have to do is mount your bike with your hand on the throttle and no break sensor cut-off and have the bike jump out from under you or push you to the ground to realize the value of break sensors and power cut-off. For advanced controllers the break sensor is what triggers "regenerative breaking" which puts power back into the battery.
@dumbkoft96
@dumbkoft96 Месяц назад
Here's a tip. Don't put your hand on the throttle when mounting.
@3DPDK
@3DPDK Месяц назад
@@dumbkoft96 A good tip and easily followed ... except for that rare occasion where you don't follow it. I don't really understand the argument against the break cut-off. Why would you want power going into the motor when you are trying to stop? Aside from that, some controllers use the signal from the breaks to activate regeneration. It's not necessary, but it helps in breaking and it does extend the range of the battery to some extent.

I tried putting sensors on my brakes but there was no good way to attach them externally. The hydraulic double hydraulic system is great so I just stop pedaling before breaking

I've been riding with a Tongsheng motor on my mountain bike for around 5 years now and never ever had any brake sensors on it. It has never bothered me either so why would I put them on now. I certainly would never change the hydraulic discs for mechanical ones; that would be a safety issue as far as I'm concerned.🚴

I drive about 6000 km in one year and i tell you don't go for an mechanic braek! You need to maintain it much more und you will lose break power and sensibility. i normally do not need touch my brake once in one year, and i got the cheapest shimano hydraulic disk brakes.

@@LukeLorusso Hydraulic are lower maintenance and don't rub as much because both pistons apply equivalent pressure to the rotor. Hydraulic is better.

I just put the Bafang SSHD on my Norco Sasquatch enduro bike. The hydraulic brake sensors have been a headache; firstly, I had to file a flat surface on the lever housing to mount the sensor sending unit because there are no flat spots whatsoever on my Avid brakes. Then I lost both magnets from fiddling around and moving them repeatedly so they’d actually register that the brakes were “off”. I finally got the front brake sensor to work, but it malfunctioned again on a ride, so I have just unplugged the sensors from the harness until I figure it out. Perhaps by experimenting with differing magnet strengths

If brake sensors on E-bikes are such a safety issue, why aren't they mandated on motorcycles? I'm 70 years old, I now own an E-bike. I have owned three motorcycles in my life. Any of them, massively more powerful than my E-bike. Now my life is in danger without "brake sensors".

The truth has to be told: Mechanical disk brakes are even weaker than V-brakes. It may not be worth compromising brake power for the simplicity…
@Sarge92

short answer no you dont you should and will learn propper breaking technique in no time whenever you reach for the break dump out the throttle long answer: its usefull if your lights system has a brake light helps cars know when your breaking at night also if you bump the throttle causing the bike to pop into a wheelie gripping the brake will kill the motor

ha, rockriders :) I put a tdsz2 on my 520 and I am waiting patiently for a second unit to go on my partners older 340. Just came up from the basement actually where I had to tighten the silver lug nut on the left (it got pretty loose), also applied some loctite. Hopefully this will get rid of the squeaking I developed recently, after a couple of hundreds of kms.

Interesting to hear that you are choosing the Bafang system for your power upgrade. I know you made the impartial comparison video, but I guess this choice shows a little about your preference? May I ask what made you, personally, prefer the Bafang system for this upgrade?
@LukeLorusso
@LukeLorusso 3 года назад
I think I've been clear in both videos. Both systems serves different purposes: it's not a matter of what you like, it's a matter of what you need. I've been specific about the issue of steep climbs in this city. I don't need to workout, I need to go back home without dying of fatigue. Before choosing one or the other, each one should ask himself: why do I need an ebike?
@andersketelsen8016
@andersketelsen8016 3 года назад
@@LukeLorusso Yeah sure, I never meant that you weren't clear. I'm not sure about which one to choose. Can you help me? I never rode any of them, I'm sure given the chance I would be able to find my preference fast, but we don't have them here in DK. I have full suspension MTB I would like to ride in the forest to get some exercise, but would also like to have some fun occasionally so going after one of the bigger versions in either case. I would also be using the bike as my daily bike where it would perhaps be nice to be able to go without too much sweat. Which one would you advise?
@LukeLorusso
@LukeLorusso 3 года назад
 @Anders Ketelsen I gave my Tongsheng based ebike to my girlfriend and we use to hang out together while I use my new Bafang bike. She's so excited about her bike! She uses it to go to work when the weather is pleasant and sometimes she makes fun of me because, if I set a certain assistance level, the motor help me until a certain speed, then it stops. She instead just push a little bit harder and, independently from which assistance level she chose, she pass me while waving her hand to say bye! To reach her, I have to increase the assistance level. She's the kind of person that does way more sport than me and she love the sensation of pedaling and bring the force with her body, but she can decide to maximize the assistance if she's tired or if she has to face a steep climb. I used that same bike for a year when I used to go to work with it and I loved it! Today I've changed job and I take the train, so the bike it's just a hobby and a way to quickly move into the city. Since I changed my habits, I need more like a moped kind of bike and the Bafang is perfect for that. Of course I do have to pedal, but it's different... It's not a cooperation with the motor: it's more like me saying "hey, help me now!", so it helps me until the predefined speed for that selected level. It might help me more than needed or less, depending of the situation and the selected assistance level. It's more like a motorized bike than an ebike. Now you have both angles, and two comparison videos! Good luck with your choice 🤞

I was thinking of putting some mechanical brake on since the sensors are way easier fit. I was also thinking of using one of the mechanical levers as a sort of clutch but since fitting the gear shift sensor I don't feel the need to but I would definitely recommend atleast the shift sensor a well spent £10 on Ali.

@@LukeLorusso Luca, I don't understand that. If you stop pedaling with a torque sensing motor, the motor immediately stop pushing, right? So I thought you wouldn't require to cut the motor through your sensors on the brakes. Am I wrong ? Thanks Ciao L.
@LukeLorusso
@LukeLorusso 2 года назад
@@sidecarural "If you stop pedaling with a torque sensing motor, the motor immediately stop pushing, right?" => No, it does not: as I said, no matter the kind of motor, the stop is not immediate and it can lead to tough situations Moreover, if you are waiting on a red light, pulling the brake levers while having your leg on the pedal, the torque sensing system without brake sensors might see the weight of your leg as an intent to pedal! In that case the motor will try to push you, consuming battery and adding unnecessary force to your brakes. You should consider all the scenarios
