this is actually more relevant than you may know. Basically the CCP had a HUGE anti-ghost campaign in the 1960s-1970s, before you were born, to prevent murders and suicides, which appear to have stopped, thankfully. Meanwhile, most recently, Xi Jin Ping is trying to do sinicization of religions etc. i.e. to come to terms with religious ideas (they arent all about crusades jihads and witchhunts). Really looking forward to your lesson!

In the Netherlands (Holland); it will bring bad luck when walking under ladder, sneezing can mean tomorrow will be nice weather. Cross fingers is hoping it will turn out fine. Knock on unpainted wood if you said something and you want it to turn out right. (Do not do this on painted wood, this will have reverse effect.) Most people i know will not take this very serious, but grew up with this knowing. From your list I only knew the umbrella.

*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone! Access the playback speed controls as follows: *Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time. *Smartphones:* open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

Walking under the ladder, opening an umbrella inside the house, and breaking the glass of a photo frame are international superstitions that I heard from some eldery people in my country (Algeria) then I found out that many people around the world have the same beliefs!

I guess with the widespread popularity of bubble tea, the phobia against drinking cold water/drinks is fading. Though bubble tea's unhealthy AF actually, with all the artificial chemicals, toppings and sugar.

as for the specific superstitions, there are the more religious ones I won't go into, however there are also some silly ones. like, throwing salt over your shoulder and knocking on wood to avoid bad luck. refusing to walk under ladders, thinking black cats or black animals in general are "bad omens" or signal bad luck. i have a thing about not wanting to use forks with bent tongs because i feel weird about it - could be a superstition! i don't think anyone else feels that way though lol

To understand what this guy is saying I suppose you must be at the level HSK 6 and you don't need to watch tutorials to learn Chinese any more. But nevertheless, Eileen you are great teacher and thank you so much for the incredible job you do in general.
@MrExasperation
@MrExasperation 8 месяцев назад
I like the more challenging speakers. Eileen rephrases what they say and asks good follow up questions that make it easy to follow the conversation - even if I don't understand everything. It's important to be exposed to full-speed native Chinese early on! You don't have to understand all of it. But you need to get used to the rhythm and speed people actually talk at, outside the classroom.

the guy pronounces certain words differently (and might sound odd in your ears) because he somewhat speaks in a dialect, which i believe had nothing to do with hsk level since they don’t teach you dialects. i can’t place what region though

Probably but even at very low levels you can distinguish the words because they're all transliterated and subtitled! Good practice

Have you considered adding RU-vid CC subtitles? I ask because with Chrome extensions you can use those to repeat the same sentence, highlight words etc.

Actually, in Eastern European Slavic culture, if a cup or a bowl is broken, it's considered to be Good Luck, not bad luck. So exactly the opposite of Chinese beliefs.
