That Marvel Super-Heroes #20 also has the 1st appearance of Valeria (Dr. Doom's first love). I bought this book (as well as the 1st 12 issues (12-23) in High Grade about 7 years ago for $10 each at my LCS. I still consider that the biggest "steal" I was ever able to accomplish as a collector.
I love these Keys for every Budget installments that you do and because of them I am able to find keys from characters that I love that I didn't think I would ever find as most iconic characters keys are so expensive. Please continue these great installments and keep up the great content
I especially like Astonishing Tales #1, Marvel Super-Heroes #20 and FF#2 & 5. I have AT #1 and MSH 20 in my collection. Got MSH 20 graded and slabbed and was happy with the 7.5. Here's a quick story. I was 14 and riding my bike to der Wienerschnitzel in 1969 for a little snack and stopped at the corner market to browse the comic book rack. I was reading through a book when the store clerk/manager pointed to a sign that said, "No Loitering" and asked me if I knew what that meant. I said "yeah, it means don't throw garbage on the ground" Ha ha.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the series Stephen! While I would love to be able to get one a week out for you, I don’t have the bandwidth for that right now. Maybe someday!
That could be fun, but the upper tiers would be tough to fill. Outside of a super high grade (9.9/10.0) Xmen221, I don’t even know what would fill the $1k+ or grail tiers. 🤔
Oh and don’t forget dd 37 and 38 where Do switches bodies with dd and I think there are two Luke cage books that doom is in and a couple Namor books etc etc. love the Luke cage one as Luke travels to latveria to get paid his $100.
Waking up to a Como Dr doom video totally awesome! I'm always happy to see that I have a book on your list unfortunately it's not the expensive ones lol and like you that I want a Marvel Superheroes copy so bad but going to have to donate a limb for that lol always enjoy your videos man. Thank you
Love the Keys for all budgets. Or whatever u call it. Well delivered. Well researched and just dang fun. The Ff annual 2 always makes me groan as it and a short box full of silver age that just walked out of the antique shop one day. It was 25 years ago so was only priced around 20 - 30 But it still hurts.
Another dynamite list, Drew. Nice work. And good on ya for mentioning Larry Lieber, who is hugely underappreciated for his contributions to the late 50s and early 60s Atlas/Marvel comic operation. Coupla comments -- First, I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest a different $50 comic, that being Luke Cage, Hero for Hire issue 9. It's insanely over the top, packed with questionable logic and goofy plot twists, and while some folks may find those aspects unappealing, I think they make LCHFH #9 the very definition of comic book fun. (I like it so much that I actually scripted a tongue-in-cheek follow-up issue.) Okay, so you can't afford a copy of FF 5, the priciest comic on Drew's list. And you wonder, "where did the first reprint appear?" because maybe that's affordable. Well, the first reprint appeared in FF Annual 2, which of course is the second-priciest book on the list. Darn. So maybe you ask, "okay, what's a LATER reprint of FF 5 and for that matter where's a reprint of the Doom origin story from Annual 2?" You're in luck. Both appear in the 1976 Fireside book, Bring on the Bad Guys, which also includes the three-part '60s origin of the Red Skull. Nice-condition copies of the paperback version of BOTBG run about $30 to $60 on eBay. (Nice-condition copies of the much rarer hardcover edition will run you a hundred bucks, minimum.)
Great video! About 7 years ago I started collecting "Doom on non-FF" covers. Avengers, Power-Man, Dare Devil, Subby, Dazzler, X-Men, Shang-Chi, Damage Control, etc. But THE best actual single issue I read of that ilk was Cloak and Dagger vol. 2 #10. It is a super secret hidden Doom gem!
Great list love Doom and those wally wood issues are GREAT!! Lieber was good as well. What about those old super villain team ups which Doom was prominent? I actually bought thar whole run last year pretty cheap has some great early Byrne covers and submariner was great in those books as well.. I think I paid like 25$ for the whole run and they were in great shape.
Another one ive been trying to find for a cheap price is Spidey Super Stories #31. It has a nice Star Wars 1 cover swipe featuring Doom, Spidey and Moondragon.
I have the Books of Doom, I remember when I read the series it was so good, that the only thing I could think of is that, it would make a great movie. Maybe now Marvel can actually make it?
Good stuff Drew. I think I heard you mention the Secret Wars #10 with Dr Doom which I have. Maybe I can grab one of these cheaper Doom books that you mentioned in your video but I'm not touching any of the FF ones! Too much ca$h right now!
Drew what is the closest alternative four figure doctor doom book to FF 5? This comic FF 5 is unfortunately not in my budget at this moment. Thanks love the doc doom list. 👏
Jarred if you only knew how long I sat there and tried to talk myself into using that book! It was definitely the closest contender that did not make it on the list. I agree with you, it’s a great book!
