I remember watching this on its original transmission in June 1965, when I was 8. I remember not being able to clearly make out what was going on in the Daleks vs Mechonoids battle sequence. Now I can see why. It’s the production team being impressionistic, or something, a bit like the approachi to filming early rock acts a couple of years later. RU-vid is such a fascinating treasure trove of memories sometimes, like finding a shoebox of old photos in an attic.
The BBC just cheaped out on the battle scenes .... I guess they did the best they could with the budget they had. (I do see why I preferred Star Trek to Doctor Who when I was a kid! Plus Kirk and Spock were 2 awesome characters and great actors.) In the above footage there does appear to be one Dalek in trouble as he was sandwiched between 2 Mechanoids @ 1:11 and they should have been able to finish him off at 1:19, but the camera cut away. Being sandwiched close in as he was, the flame throwing saw blades of the Mechonoids should have easily exterminated him. Unfortunately for the Mechonoids, they lacked an equivalent to the Dalek's ray guns which could be fired from a much further distance and cause more extensive damage. As long as the daleks could stay 8 to 10ft away from the Mechonoid's flame throwers, they clearly had the advantage. As long as they kept their distance and fired their ray guns, the daleks were invincible!
Can we just appreciate the brass BALLS on the production crew to have a prop setup which includes a freaking FLAMETHROWER? Wow safety standards were MUCH more lax back in the '60s.
@@TheWeepingDalek I only realized that after watching the episode. Doesn't change the fact that it looks like a fight between salt shakers and tea infusers.
@Connor Cooke I just assumed that it was a fan, because I used to use a cheap voice changer app, that had a fan voice changer and it made your voice sound somewhat like a mechanoid.
@@ImperialGamer5 A fan wouldn't chop the audio nearly as finely. You can clearly hear that the audio signal is cut on/off/on/off rapidly, which is not at all what happens when you speak through a fan. A fan blade doesn't completely block all traces of sound does it?
Even with the limited practical effects, you can really tell the carnage being done. Now just imagine a New Who episode with the Mechanoids and Daleks...
the problem is that the mechanoid are technically extinct (well honestly they brought back cybermen because some guy reinvented it so why cant the human re-build mechanoid) but how ever they are still a human creation so they can be added back into series without much of a problem indeed
I think it's always a good idea to give the daleks a threat that they can't defeat, in like this as we font really see them fight a for that they can't defeat except the doctor . I want to see more of the daleks history and conflicts they had with other species. We still have plenty of dalek story ideas as we never see them in the right order. I would like to see them return but be made slightly more speak and modern like they did with the mondasian cybermen, so in think it could work xx
Watching this makes me wonder what it could've been like if the Dalek movies with Peter Cushing as Dr. Who had done a third movie adapting "The Chase". Especially as "The Chase" has a sort of similar tone as the Dalek movies.
Barbara and Ian's last ever story, a great one to go out in, yes it's a brilliant battle and well done given the limitations of the time; a true great.
Me too! Its been too long a wait! They should bring the Mechonoids, Robo Yetis, and the terrifying Drashigs back in series 11 and 12. If they don't I'm going to be very disappointed!
Dude! Three words! Go (Bleep) yourself! Most of the times they do bring back old classic monsters such as Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, Zygons, The Master, Ice Warriors, and also Davros himself. I think they should bring back the Mechanoids, Robo Yetis, and the terrifying Drashigs back in series 11 and 12. If they don't I'm going to be very angry!

I would like to see them return but be made slightly more sleek and modern like they did with the mondasian Cybermen in S10, so I think it could work. Xx
I really love this battle scene between the Daleks and Mechanoids. Wonderfully choreographed and realized. Probably the best Dalek battle of the 60's. Really cool! That shot where all three Daleks move their guns and sucker arms in unison is pretty awesome. My favorite shot of the whole sequence. Anyone who wants to experience a further confrontation between the Daleks and Mechanoids should purchase the Big Finish 6th Doctor audio "The Juggernauts". It's great and features, The Daleks, Mechanids, and Davros Check it out!
I recently watched all of the black and white era of Doctor Who. In many respects I prefer it to much of the later colour stuff. And I'd take this music over the wonky 70s/80s synth any day lol
Black and white and lower resolution is more forgiving. It creates atmosphere on its own, and unfortunately colour much better shows up the details of the low budget sets and props.
Post time war Daleks maybe, but classic who Daleks got their arses kicked a lot. Actually the same is really applicable to the post time war Daleks as well
Wow... No special or CGI effects, the destruction shots of one from both sides was repetitive. And yet more thrilling than that lame shoot-out bridge scene from Revolution of the Daleks. Followed up by that bit Dalek dialogue that reveals all the human Daleks were killed off screen.
I turned over the channel to find an episode of the new series,so I started watching that. But then came a scene in which a man was in a corridor between two Daleks and didn't even try to move out of the way,yet somehow the two Daleks shot each other with him unharmed. I thought "I know you have to suspend disbelief sometimes, but this is beyond silly",gave up on it and turned over the channel again to watch something else.
