In 2009, Mawdryn Undead received (optional) new effects for its DVD release. Here is a comparison of the updated footage with the original footage.
Doctor Who is a BBC Property. I do not claim to be the owner of these properties.

Brendan Sheppard and I did the effects for this DVD. Thankfully he did the rotoscoping around the actors.. I did the 3D CGI.. that was sooooo long ago. How things have changed technology wise.

Thank you for the correction Rob, I wasn’t fully aware tbh and was going off a vague memory of seeing yours and Aaron’s name credited for the effects.

Your work is wonderful. I was always quite fond of Mawdryn Undead, but some of those digital effects have always been cringeworthy. Too bad they didn't commission you guys to digitally change the Gaurdians' Hair in these stories. Even when I first watched this in the 80's as a teenager I just thought "Really? This is what they're going with?"

Remarkable. I remember enjoying the updated version, but I never went back and checked the original version to compare the two. This clearly shows what was changed. I am really enjoying these comparison videos. Keep up the good work.

I love seeing the classics dressed up. If I'm honest, I do prefer a couple of the original fx but that's just me. Great job.

The trouble with the new effects for the Black Guardian trilogy is that they aren't sympathetic to the audio - they want to be featured in a special edition. For example when the TARDIS collides with the spaceship, they inserted space shots whereas the action and sound is inside the TARDIS. The effects just don't marry to the sound and without that they don't convince.
@DanTheMan2150AD
@DanTheMan2150AD 3 года назад
I personally don’t mind the sound issues since the new effects are just that much better. They could have overlaid some new sound effects to compensate but otherwise I don’t mind them one bit.
@doctor49152
@doctor49152 3 года назад
we were not allowed to touch the audio. Any audio work went through Mark Ayres for re-mixing. His hands were tied doing the 5.1 remix on Enlightenment.

When you consider the technical and financial constraints of the 1980s versions i think the originals still hold up really well. The new versions have a different flavour but are not necessarily superior. In most cases i prefer the originals but it is nice to have the choice.

Generally good. One small niggle, the flashback sequence misses the music cues for the various incarnations of The Doctor.
@DanTheMan2150AD
@DanTheMan2150AD 3 года назад
Not much to improve there as the music for the sequence is easily one of the best pieces from the 80s.
@davidjefferies2820
@davidjefferies2820 3 года назад
@@DanTheMan2150AD it’s not the music, it’s the clips. The snippet of the them top line originally coincided with the reveal of each Doctor. Now the clips don’t do that and, to me at least, the music cues are now randomly herd. The music, as you say, was one of the best. The clips themselves are a great improvement.

One thing I'd like to see in future special editions is updated sound effects and music alongside the VFX/CGI. Sound is much more important in film and TV than most people realise and I think a good number of Classic Who stories could be even more watchable if they replaced the stock sound effects and repetitive music with something that's more tailored for each individual story. (Though 80s Who doesn't have this problem as it sounds really good most of the time and Mawdryn Undead is no exception to this!)

Mostly brilliant, I especially loved the glowing-eyed statue correction, my only small criticism is I felt the dodgy disco video effect background would have been better replaced by something more equal in feel, like a swirling spiral of expanding coloured mists, just to keep the same mood as the original.

I would have loved if they had further tweaked Turlough's first encounter with the Guardian, so that both characters appeared more stylized - as if their appearance was influenced by their surroundings. It would have made it even more jarring, similar in the psychological impact of the mindscape in Kinda.

Honestly, this along with Snake Dance and Englightenment remains one of my favorite stores from Season 20. I feel that this story benefits from the updated special effects. I can see they have put in a lot of hard work (by updating Classic Doctor Who effects standards). Englightenment with the Widescreen also has some pretty good special effects improvements. My only quarrel would be that in some scenes what we see does not sync well with the Audio. Mostly though, the effects have been consistent in Mawdryn and Enlightenment so I rate the new effects highly.

I really like the updated effects, except for the few that appear where there were no effect prior (so they replace existing footage of the actors) and the fact a few scenes such as the TARDIS materializing on the shit don't seem to fit together right because the extra or new footage isn't added, but put over the scene.

I really love most of these updates, but added crystal effect is just bad and I think the original practical worked fine. I think that's when the effects annoy me most, when they're unnecessary and add nothing.

Not gonna lie... But this effect comparison for "Mawdryn Undead" was quite impressive in my opinion 😏😉👍 But the one effect which I thought was quite a good upgrade was the scene where the Black Guardian talk with Vislor Turlough at (0:36 - 1:13) 👍

All these new effects (for all the releases) just suck of "we have to give the viewer value for money". As such, there are effects replaced that don't need to be replaced (and often they aren't as good because the new CGI is crap) and, as in this case, effects created that weren't there before! Granted, there are the odd story that really does benefit, like Dalek Invasion of Earth, but for the most part I'm not impressed. I understand that one can only do what one can do with the budget allowed, but maybe that money could be put to better use by being picky as to what effects to replace rather than the "blanket all" that seems to be the case. I'm really glad to see these comparison videos as all they do is reinforce my decision to stick to the originals.
