Ratings are messed up this year. Aside from this being the age of 'content reach' rather than TV overnights (we're never going to know Disney+ stats for +28 days), are they still calculating consolidated UK figures as Live +7 days? What happens if people watch 17 hours *before* 'live'? The more intrigue the show has - and this season’s set up that way - surely the more people will watch early. Is that factored in?

Overnight ratings, plus iplayer and Disney+ streaming hits most likely add up to a healthy figure. In the age of streaming, overnights aren't indicative of success or failure. People simply watch TV differently these days.

Only 3.58 million watched BOOM over 7 days. That includes those that watched on iPlayer. Also it is not doing well on Disney Plus because it ha snot even got into any top 10 streaming charts. Its not even got into the top ten Disney Plus charts.

It's an inexplicable rise really. The weather was good. So looking at the schedules both the BBC and ITV showed the news just before Doctor Who, meaning the show was up against bog-standard gameshow 'In For a Penny'. At 7.30 Britains Got Talent starts on ITV and I imagine some of the audience switches over to that... so the ratings given here are an average take, not an absolute one. (Do we know how much Britains Got Talent got overnight?). I was outdoors when it was on BBC1, so decided to watch it later that night on I-Player. What struck me about it was how baffling it must have been for the average BBC1 viewer to try watching this episode. I wasn't sure I was enjoying it myself, and the average person would surely be switching over, so I thought. So how it managed to hit this (relative) high in ratings I just don't know... it may just be one of those fluke's, and next week will see a return to normal averages of 2m...

The inconsistency of the ratings is perplexing and shows that RTD is surely failing to do what his job was - relaunch strongly and build a momentum to the climax of a short season

From watching many reviews for 73 yards every last one have said they have needed to rewatch the episode multiple times. To get to grasp and for content for the reviews. One guy said he had to watch it over 4 times. Even watching the episode in fragments, it all add up to give exaggerated figures.
@noblerees1
@noblerees1 Месяц назад
In some ways that is the very point. Dr Who is successful when it has cut through with the general public - not hoping that fans watch it obsessively making notes and joining the dots to make sense or appreciate its ‘value.’ People are watching TV less never mind watching 4 times to find love for it. I like to judge as an average punter. If dr who fans don’t like it or understand it after one watch that is appalling. It means it’s failed. No programme maker can expect our indulgence of more time

In comparison to the immediate episodes previous to this, it wasn't badly written, it's a rehash, light version of "Turn Left", and by standards of legacy episodes it was woeful. However, it was a simple (but flawed) bit of story telling, with no push on agenda, and it seems just this slight reprieve from the holier than thou preaching, was enough to have, a slight positive upswing in ratings then.

Only a small amount of people are watching it on iPlayer before transmission on BBC 1. Only about an average of 118,000 watched it. Only 78,000 watched BOOM on iPlayer before transmission lol. They said they would get millions of views on iPlayer lol. How wrong they were.

It is hilarious that lots of people are celebrating the rise in overnights for 73 yards. But, lets not forget that 2.62 million is STILL a really low figure. Dr Who was getting double these figures in 2023 with the 3 specials and Xmas special.

I’ve watched Doctor Who from the very first episode on Saturday the 23rd of November 1963 as a nine year old. And I was hooked from the beginning and William Hartnell remains my favourate Doctor. Having said that I’ve watched every episode of Dr Who, and Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy stand out for me as amongst my favourates. Peter Cushing didn’t work for me, Jodie Whittaker didn’t work either and the Ncuti Gatwa series just feels so poorly written and acted that I really don’t see anything of Doctor Who and wonder what Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat are thinking. I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking this isn’t working for me and why I’m I bothering to tune in on a Saturday night.
@davidmullen6011
@davidmullen6011 Месяц назад
It's four episodes in now, so I do think we are at the point where criticisms and observation on how the return of Russell Davies are more than fair to make. It isn't working I have to agree, it may be that Davies has too much power now, that there is no one acting as a moderating force over his thinking and decision making, or it may be that he has simply lost all of his onetime good judgement and that ability to connect with his audience out there... But if this is all he can do for his first season, what in the world is his second season going to be like?! I can't imagine people being happy behind the scenes, and I do expect some real drama to come out over the next 12 months. Either Davies steps down, of Gatwa goes. That would be my feeling. There is too much money at stake, and too big a BBC brand to let die on the vine like this.

I really enjoyed Moffats episode. I mean it felt familiar, I badly want to see new writers (or Big Finish/New Adventure writers ala RTDs first run) - but I'd have no complaints if that was the norm. The show desperately needs to seperate out the roles of showrunner, script editor and writer again.

1963 was my starting point too, I was 6. I've hung on amongst the highs and lows of this great series, but it's becoming a struggle. It's nice to know I'm not alone in feeling this way, but also sad that so many fans do.

Boom was terrible and 73 yards was worse. It actually created it's own paradox. It must become a fixed point in time. Or it didn't happen. My reasoning for this at the end it was reset so rubys story never happened. Or they are in a loop constantly going around. It must be one or the other it can't have both one must be true.

I loved Boom, and I loved 73 yards until the ending - then my opinion soured immediately when I realised RTD had nothing to support that episode of mysteries. I assume it didn't happen and it was never really about Mad Jack? But maybe RTD just didn't realise it would be undone if the loop was broken. Who knows. I think maybe he didn't care.
