"As you might have noticed..." and yet I hadn't, and I've never heard anyone else ever comment on those drawings. Just goes to show, especially in a really great episode, there can always be something new to notice or think about.
Not only one of the best stories of New Who, but also the introduction of the wonderful River Song, one of my all-time favorite characters from the program.
@@rossross3689 - I like the way she seems to keep the Doctor off-balance, being one step ahead of him all the time. It' not often we see the Doctor on the back foot, and certainly not to this extent.
When my granddaughter was writing her dissertation she stayed up all night in the University Library, studying. Her text messages to her mother went thus: Lizzie: Well I've finished my dissertation - stayed up all night in the Library but it's complete. Vicky: Well done. Lizzie: I'm still here, but all on my own now. Where is everyone? Vicky: The Vashta Nerada have eaten them all. Stay out of the shadows. You have to be a Doctor Who fan to appreciate.
I've so been looking forward to your reaction to this two-parter and seeing what you pick up on. I've watched this one a bunch of times and never noticed the girl's drawings!
the scary part about this moment is how 7:35 shes saying "Ice cream" so much that it begins to sound like "I scream" just more clever writing from this fantastic show.
River Song is truly a fantastic character. What makes Alex Kingston's (River Song) performance even greater is that she knew about that character and her back story as much as we viewers knew that time. She plays it as if she would know already everything and she plays it so well.
One of my all time favourite episodes. I need to go watch it in its entirety again, now. And River Song is one of the best additions to Doctor Who ever.
Once again, you've proven that you're smarter than the average bear. Very quickly, you picked up the pieces and codified them into the Doctor and River traveling in opposite directions in time. Best. Leo.
I could tell you that this is one of my all time favourites, but everyone's doing that so here's some trivia instead. Tallulah Riley, who plays Miss Evangelista, has married and divorced Elon Musk twice.
I really like your review (you're really good, to notice the new theme and many other things. Without spoilers, I'm really impress of your analyse), and your reaction when you saw River for the very first time. Well... I'm pretty sure you'll gonna love her, she has already grown on you (she's fascinating, and sassy, and clever and brave ... Yes, she's my favorite character since this episod) But Spoilers ! For Me, the episods of the library are ones of my favorites. But I really, really like Moffat mind, Moffat's way to tell stories. So I'm a fan of Moffat's era (wich it begins in season 5, I can't wait to see your reactions !). In this episod, I immediatly liked the chemistry between River and the Doctor. I'm agree with you, the acting of Alex Kingston is really good (and Tennant is really good with her too, because we can see the Doctor confused, intrigated, worry and ... A little bit fascinated ?), and - thanks to her - we can believe she already has a story with te Doctor, even he doesn't know her yet (which kind of story ? Spoilers, of course). That, that particular idea is really good, two time travelers which doesn't travel in the same direction (not really in opposite direction, but in different direction. That's why they need diary. If they travelled in full opposite direction, they wouldn't need it, they would know the other couldn't have memory of previous adventure, because it would be futur adventure for him. But River thinks he could have memories of the Bysantium or Asard so... Not full opposite direction. Not sure it's easy to understand, I'm not good to explain in english. (it's not my native language, I'm french so is not easy to translate my minds in other language)) Good, good travel with Professor River Song !
Damn. I consider this one of my favorite episodes, and I NEVER noticed the Rose/Bad Wolf paintings before you pointed them out XD Totally makes sense, but I never even glimpsed at them...
This was directed by Euros Lyn and Impossible Planet/Satan Pit was directed by James Strong. Interestingly, both directors worked with Chris Chibnall (and David Tennant) on Broadchurch.
Season four of New Who is still my favourite, although there are comparable highlights from future seasons; but from this episode onwards the quality of the stories in this season is phenomenal, and probably demonstrates Who at its absolute best.
"How old should River be?" - Remember, the Doctor is a time traveller, his chronology is totally mixed up and out of order. Steven Moffat stated that he was inspired for this story by "The Time Traveller's Wife".
Nice in depth analysis! Please be careful of spoilers in the YT comments. A moderator may help as automated moderation may not be enough, or first getting further ahead on Patreon. Anyway, look forward to your hopefully unspoiled reactions for the rest of the season. :)
I watched the TV series ER (1994) when it came out and as Seasons passed. To say that I was totally tickled when Alex Kingston showed up in this episode, having only known her from ER, would be understatement. I was a big fan of hers and this appearance did nothing to change that. Best. Leo.
It's good you picked up on moffat because by this point when this episode first came out it had been announced that he was going to be taking over Russel T Davies as showrinner for the next season so alot of people looked to this episode as a hint for thing to expect from his era of who
For your sake, I hope all your well-intentioned viewers will keep their big trap shut on what you've learned in this episode. It's for your own good. Spoilers. Best. Leo.
