Apologies if someone else said this already, but fun fact about this episode. Back in 1964, there was a 1st Doctor episode where he told his companion something along the lines of "If you ever catch me wearing a stetson again, feel free to just shoot it off my head." And, well, in this episode, when he wore a stetson and declared their coolness, River shot it right off his head.
Something I love about Moffat's era is his commitment to trying something new in terms of series structure, storytelling style each time. No one Moffat series is the same as another and even though he doesn't always pull it off with the tightness of series 5 (although I'd argue he does reach those heights again) I appreciate the refusal to just fall into a set formula.
Imagine having to follow up David Tennant (in any role) and then you pull off something like this. People (including the BBC) really thought the show might be done after Tennant and RTD departed, it's astounding that they came back so strong.
It was nice to see Father and son act together, Canton was played by William Sheppard (old) and Mark Sheppard (Young). I love this season. Moffat is a master at playing the long game.
So glad you caught 'The Lodger TARDIS'. In real-time these episodes aired almost a year apart, of course, but even most reactors who watch these weekly still miss that.
Yesss I wholeheartedly agree! Lmao I've never seen another person say that S6 is their favourite. The ending was pretty meh but I probably enjoyed this series the most out of Doctor Who.
This was my favorite Series until Series 9 came out. It’s still a close second, but Series 9 is still the best for me. Capaldi’s speeches are unmatched in not only Doctor Who, but all of television IMO.
@@Jim_The_Fish Series 9 is a good one. However on rewatches, I don't like it as much anymore. In fact, Series 10 is now my favorite from Capaldi's era. Capaldi's speeches are really good, but I would also say Smith is just as good. The two best Doctors when it comes to speeches.
Remember what I said about whiplash? Yeah. Yeah, you gonna need a neckbrace for _sure._ I just want to say I love what you said about Rory in regards to him understanding River's predicament. He's a very empathetic person, that's what makes him such a good nurse. And the Doctor is such a good doctor because he is also very observant and make no mistake, the Doctor 100% notices Rory's inclinations. In fact one should definitely keep a close eye on the relationship between Amy and Rory because Moffat oftentimes purposefully places their struggles and successes in front of the observant Doctor in order to teach him a lesson. 😉 And as for Matt Smith regenerating... it's one of the clearest memories I have of watching this live. I remember thinking 'damn, I guess he didn't like the job??' I was kinda annoyed that we were getting another Eccleston situation! 😂 And yes, although Matt's goofy, happy-go-lucky bounciness is endlessly joyful... You haven't seen *nothing* yet. Just you wait until Matt is breaking into painful, achingly beautiful pieces of vulnerability and reverence. He's going to show you the inner wounds of the Doctor that are still raw and bleeding and in need of soothing, soothing love.
I think your reactions are the ones I enjoy most on all of RU-vid. The depth into which you go in your analyses and your honest enjoyment of the show and stories is refreshing. It makes such a difference to see someone who is genuinely invested :) Thanks you!
River Song really doesn't like the Doctor's hats! Another great, detailed analysis (as always). This is a great two-part opener (and one of the best opening episodes full-stop). Including the Xmas special, this is a hell of a run by Moffat (as writer as well as showrunner): the Pandorica Opens; the Big Bang; A Christmas Carol; The Impossible Astronaut and the next one [spoilers!]. Probably the best in all Who for my money. I adore Matt too. A faultless performance here. As you point out, We have all the goofiness (and I love the flirting with River) but boy, here is seriously cold when he confronts River and the others in the Tardis. Another brilliant performance.
crazy run of episodes from moffat. an amazing two part finale then the best christmas special and then maybe the best series opener and as a two parter all in a row. all close to 10/10 episodes. amazing. he opens the series up with what could be a finale.
This is a great season opener (I mean, River's in it, 'nuff said) of a pretty great season. Yes there will be highs and lows, but overall very enjoyable. I also love how for the first time we're in on the secret when River says "spoilers". And say hello to our best dressed villains! I know it adds to the creepiness but I can't help but give props to them for looking so sharp 😂 I know you're excellent at predictions based on even the smallest breadcrumbs, but I'm really hoping you get surprised by a few twists ahead. Have fun!
Series 6 is much more enjoyable than series 5 in my opinion, its Matt Smith's best series and you can really see him come into the character and give it his own spin
I really hope you've got someone to moderate these comments for you because there are clowns spoiling things. Great reaction though as always, you're so good at picking out the tiny but important details. I'm right with you on "don't ever think you're on my level, don't think you're capable of that." When Smith turns sinister he's so much more tangibly dangerous than Tennant was. There's the Oncoming Storm.
You’re EASILY one of my all time favorite Who reactors. Sesskasays is top for me only because she’s completely caught up and has watched half of Classic Who. You and Blind Wave are my next favorite, and that’s literally four different people in that reaction. You’re brilliant. You’re attention to detail is astounding. You don’t miss anything, and you’re analyses are amazing and thorough. I’ve binged all your reactions over the past few days, and I’ll be looking forward to every new reaction you post. You’re in for some whoppers.
Fabulous reaction and review as always! Yeah, Moffat knew and we knew at the time Silence in the Library was broadcast that he would be the next showrunner. "Forest of the dead" and "Silence in the library" were specifically planned that way... we just never realised how much was planned ahead... it was a looooooong game!
I finally understand the line River yells out "They're American" it was a subtle joke about Americans and their gun... 'issues'..... And ive only seen this show like 20 times lol
If you like Mark Sheppard here, watch Supernatural. He's brilliant in that show. Cracks me up that here he's playing an American character in a British show, and in Supernatural he's a British character in an American show!
