Yep, It's best if you don't try and figure it out; just wait for future episodes. Not only is it more fun but also it's like you are at the same level of confusion and time travel with the doctor.

Fun fact: the writers refused to tell any of the actors (including David Tennant) who River was and how she knew the Doctor. David said in an interview that he was instructed to make his own theories and go with that. He spent the filming of this and next episode guessing (and playing the Doctor as having the same guess) that she was a future regeneration. His confusion is entirely genuine.

People don't actually 'randomly' trust the Doctor. It makes it clearer in the classic series, but the Doctor is actually hypnotic in the same way the Master is. The Doctor uses his ability as a bit of a push rather than actually taking control of people, but that was the explanation of why many people tend to trust him so readily.

You have now officially met River Song, one of my favorite characters, and the Vashta Nerada, aka Steven Moffat's scariest creation. This story is one of my very favorites. I don't recommend watching it in the dark, though...

Stephen Moffat (showrunner during this time) makes us terrified of normal things. Statues (Weeping Angels), Shadows (Vashta Narada) and more stuff I won't mention. Do you think he just sits around going, "Oh that's a particularly boring object. How can I make it make people wet themselves?"

It's interesting to note something I never realized until now, there's a bit of a continuity error. River asks "Have we done the crash of the Byzantium" yet, and that is in fact something they cover in a future episode, as you've already seen, but that was a Matt Smith episode, and she would have known that he had a different face for that adventure.

My best guess is that Moffatt had intended River Song and Ten to have at least one more adventure together before the regeneration but with David Tennant having limited availability after Series 4, the limited shooting schedule meant they could only do the 4 specials instead of a full series in 2009, so that idea was scrapped and postponed until after the regeneration.

Simply my favourite story in DW, so well written. Donna in jeopardy, Miss Evangelista dead in an instant, Dr Moon telling the girl that her nightmares are real, and... River Song. But if you think this was good, the second part is incredible.

you probably know dr moon from arrow. there was an actress from agents of shield in season 1 though. the journalist with the hatch in her forehead was one of fitzsimmons' instructors at shield academy.
