If you notice, the Dr scans her into the Sonic he gives her as a gift. The same sonic that 10 uses to save River to the library.

The next time River sees The Doctor will be in the Library as 10th Doctor with Donna. That is how she gets the screwdriver she has there. Story comes full circle.

Those who don't show love sometimes feel it the most strongly. I don't know where you guys get that Twelve doesn't love. He most certainly does. All of season nine was about how much he loves, about how much it hurts too lose people, and how much he's tired of losing people, and how he can't stand the thought of losing Clara, so much so that he is willing to break apart time and space to save her. He loves so deeply that it hurts, which is why he keeps so much of it bottled up inside. And he most certainly loves River, otherwise he wouldn't have been crossing his arms so much! lol

This was a super sweet and significant episode. Because this was the last night they spent together before she went to the library. And when she died there she said, you showed up on my doorstep with a new haircut and a suit, you took me to see the singing towers of derillium, the towers sang, and you cried. He always knew how she was gonna die. It’s one of my favorite episodes because it’s so beautiful and meaningful. And seeing her disbelief that he loved her was heartbreaking, but she got to see later that he really did love her a lot. He said not one living thing is worth you. Their relationship is amazing

The sonic he gave her is the one she is carrying in Silence in the Library. The one that saved her life. She goes there next and mentions the events of this episode.

That is such a tiny baby! My kids were HUGE when they came out! For our daughter, my wife was in labor FOR A WEEK! I love that you spend most of your labor watching Dr. Who. Be proud! Oh...and in the Jewish calendar that date would be in the past.

The sonic screwdriver he gives her is the one she has when she meets the 10th Doctor in the library (Silence in the Library), so this is the last time (unless he uploads her from the Library database) that they ever see each other when both know who the other is.

Congratulations! In River's timeline, the next thing that happens to her after this event is Silence In The Library/Forest of the Dead. You should give it a rewatch.

Errr I think you missed the point here guys. It’s the end of River’s story it’s basically the night before she dies. Remember we always met her out of sequence. Also I’m not convinced that the Doctor loves or shows love in a human way. Personally, I think companions fall for him and he has affection for them. Even 10 couldn’t say he loved Rose, in fact I don’t even think we’ve ever heard him/her express that emotion but as viewers we assume he does.

You guys forgetting one thing though... River has the all the pictures of doctor faces... That is the reason why she doesn't get the Doctor is the Doctor. Which make perfect sense because she think she has all of them. And it is the very same reasons why I think that we can not see any more River Song in the future... Because the book was almost finished. There are just couple of pages left. But if you'll wacth the actress' interviews, you will see that Alex Kingston mention about the Doctor's cribe from the episode when Doctor finds out who is River Song AKA Melody Pond. In that cribe there are multiple names on it who ever slept and maybe even will be sleep... She basically says that there is River's and the Doctor's names on it. But is it just two names? So I think maybe after 24 years or maybe before that, River got pregnant... And maybeeeee they have a child and maybe on that cribe their child's name on it... Who knows? I just can't wait to see what will happen... Because she definitely try to give us a hint. AND SECOND The doctor was not like so much energetic and excited about it because he knows that some thing is off when River did not recognized him. After that he knows that it was the goodbye time for him to River... For god sake! This Doctor never even ment to be like funny Doctor. The vibe of this Doctor is a sarrow because the 12th Doctor the one who is grieving of his wife's death and a life without her... 11th the one who has a family, he was the member of the Pond family and he cry for the first time when he felt like a having a family. Which was when Amy and Rory tell him that they always put a plate on the table for him. Which makes perfect sense again. He lost all of them. Before them he has friends but they were his family... And he will have friends again... It is just sad... If you watch this episode with that information, that the tone of sadness makes perfect sense in this episode... I hope you will have a comment to share about it because after Matt Smith I only wacthed the christmas specials with the new Doctor and couldn't watched it after River. River is the best character. Right next to the best Doctor, 11. Hydroflax said she was telling the truth when she said the Doctor doesn’t love her. But that could be because she believed it to be true. And just because you believe something is true does not make it real. I loved 12 being jealous. How River became a proto Timelord is often misunderstood. It wasn’t just because she was conceived in the Tardis, she was conceived when the Tardis was in the time vortex. That’s how she got time lord DNA. More River and Doctor adventures are in the Big Finish audiobook series. The Diary of River Song. They know how to do audiobooks right. They get the actual voice actors and add sound effects. It’s like you’re watching it. The latest Doctor she has adventures with his 10. Doctor and River, best ship ever.

They have clearly never been THE biggest fans of the show going by how little they remember at times, but dear lord, the fact they didnt remember and therefore pissed the point of this story entirely is mind boggling to me. like theres a difference between not remembering little fan boy ish details and not remembering THE vital pieces of backstory the like of which inform this whole episode.

This Doctor does not kiss and hug. Remember the first episode of this Doctor (8X1 Breathe) with Clara. You sometimes take the whole Dr Who thing a bit too serious and try to break it down instead of just sitting back and enjoying the episode. he Specials are all meant to be different in their own way. From here River goes to the Library, the sonic is the one shown at the end with David Tennant.

Even though it was only for 1 episode, I feel that 1) Capaldi had some of the best chemistry with River Song, and 2) This was in my Top 5 favorite River Song episodes.

River isn't everyone's cup of tea but she is SO well written. Her timeline is perfect. Moffatt was very good at that. Great actress too.

When River is in the Library she talks about the future Doctor and what a night it was on Darillium. Little did we know that night was 24 years and the Doctor she was talking about was 12. I don’t understand why you are still questioning if the Doctor loves River even after he gets a restaurant built for her, takes her to the Singing Towers for dinner, gives her a new sonic screwdriver, and is willing to spend 24 years with her. Why would he spend all those years with her if he didn’t love her? You have to use your imagination what they got up to for 24 years! There doesn’t have to be constant snogging and affection to show that they love each other romantically. 11 was the blossoming romance, 12 is the love that River settles down with and spend the rest of her life with until she went to the Library.

corect myself oldest time lord ever on the showe was 10 miliion thats way more than i thought so time isnt the problem id say but that one was rosallion who rweached imortality so he doesnt exactly count we also know Salyavin who was 22,000 last time we checked i did find that the second docter is referenced qouting that baring any acidents or artificial death his people couold live forever but this contradicted when thefirst docter regegerated due to his body old age its complex

Well... to answer to the previous video's question ; Here is the woman he loves with both hearts (with a sexual dimension I mean. Obviously he loves Clara, but he never looks at her the way he looks River before his "Hello Sweetie"). She's his wife, and they'll spend 24 years together... Sure she'll can speak about his whole new body after that :D

River more than any other companion really bought into that mystique of the Doctor as an immortal god and force of nature, so she frames her relationship with him through than lens and can't conceive of the notion of as she puts it the stars loving her back.

I think he does love her, but the love of a millennia old Time Lord is different to love as we know it. Twelve doesn't often show affection physically in human terms but he does care a lot beneath that shell, and I think the love between them here is clearer than it ever was with Eleven. It's a deeper connection that they both understand and this is a more honest representation of it than the jokey, flirty Eleven.

I was expecting these reactions to be on hiatus for a bit with the little new one around- I’m not complaining, just surprised.

Fun backstory - Moff had not intended to pair up River and Capaldi's Doctor at all. Early in Capaldi's run Russell T. Davies asked when this might happen and Moffat said he wasn't planning on it as he was kind of done with River's story and didn't think she and Capaldi's grumpy Doctor would mesh that well. RTD replied, "What?!?!! Oh, no no no no no!! Capaldi and Kingston?! It'll be a SEX STORM!!!" So Moff had a think and came up with this. They're both damn' fine actors but it always strikes me how amazingly well they play together. And who says this is the last we'll see of them? They could always appear together for an anniversary multi-Doctor story if Chibnall or whoever smartens up and asks Moff for an assist at the scripting stage.

When my daughter was born, my ex-wife didn't know that she was in labor either. She was complaining that she couldn't get comfortable all night while we were sleeping. She had a doctor's appointment at 10am the next morning. So when we went to the appointment, the doctor said, _"Hey, you're at 6cm. . .why don't we go across the street and have a baby?"_ Then at 1:30 p.m. I became a father. 😁 That was 33 years ago in July. While you probably have memories of *11* and *River* kissing, but if I recall correctly, *The Doctor* doesn't initiate the kisses. And he always appears quite awkward and taken aback by them (with perhaps the one exception being when they were on _Trenzalore_ and he kissed her and nobody else could see her). I think judging this *Doctor's* affection for *River* on the single episode might be a little unfair. I think he was extremely tender and loving (and as *Jane* pointed out, even a bit jealous). Perhaps you didn't see it that way because you didn't realize the bigger implication of this episode and its place in their entire history. *The Doctor* certainly did, and sadly, so did many of us. 😔 Also, there was no relationship with *David Tennant's Doctor.* As others may have pointed out, after _this night_ the next time *River* sees *The Doctor* is when she meets the *Tenth Doctor* in the library for what is *The Doctor's* _first time_ (and her last). One of the reasons *River Song* didn't recognize *The Doctor* was because Time Lords can only regenerate 12 times. That's why in the previous episode, before *The Doctor* shot the other time Lord, he asked what regeneration the Time Lord was on. Because if that Time Lord was on his 12th regeneration, that would have meant death when *The Doctor* shot him. So, how did he get _more_ regenerations? Well, it was the result of what happened in *Matt Smith's* final episode. The crack returned and it turned out to be the Time Lords. And after *Clara* pleaded for them to help him, they gave *11* an unknown number additional regenerations. Remember when that regeneration energy was coming through the crack in the sky? *Congratulations! I'm glad you're all home, safe and well now.*
