Amazing review. I appreciate your care and knowledge of Doctor Who lore. Thanks for being one of the few that understand how truly Dr. Who this new doctor is. Keep doin great videos!
I really enjoyed it. I'd go as far as it's the best Christmas Special yet and a fantastic first new doctor story. I loved the Gremlins meets Labyrinth baddies/story-line. It was the perfect daftness to keep you entertained while the series' new characters were given time to establish themselves. I don't get the whole "OMG, 15 dancing in a kilt and a song in MY Doctor Who?!" brigade. There were songs in Hartnell's era, Troughton played (admittedly badly) a recorder, Smith danced like a crazy person and Capaldi played the guitar on top of a tank... and nobody much cared when Jamie wore his kilt throughout his time with 2. It's almost like there's something else going on that they don't quite like... *strokes chin* I quite like that RTD is JNT'ing the feck out of it. Could just be me but I get the feeling there might be a bit of trolling of Chibnall here. *strokes chin again*
I really really enjoyed this episode. 15 and Ruby had excellent chemistry, and the whole thing felt fresh and alive to me. It was the perfect pallet cleanser after the uncertainty that The Giggle left me with about the future of Who. I also cannot express how much I appreciated the restraint here with just 2 babies and Davina at risk. No world ending threat, no invasion, no cracks risking the destruction of time. It was just fun and whimsical, and I am very hyped.
The plot was pretty silly, light fare imo (I know how daft that sounds when it's about baby eating goblins). What really stood out was the characterisation and performances. RTD giving us so many characters to care about or be intrigued by. Ncuti and Millie were great. I did need to watch it a second time with subtitles though - the incidental music is sooo loud.
I really liked the Giggle and this episode also. Doctor Who is fun again. Sure is it perfect? no. definitely not but its nice to have actual rounded characters and the chemistry of Gatwa and Gibbson is pretty awesome
I'd say the whole thing felt resoundingly middle of the road. Very 'meh', no stakes to speak of and very little to enthuse about the new characters for. Especially as they seem to be setting up Ruby as another Rose but with the 'companion as mystery box' storytelling that hamstrung both Amy and Clara in their first seasons.
I liked the episode. Didn't care for the song though, it was a bit too human/pop for me, something a bit Lord of the Rings would have been great. The Doctor and Ruby joining in was quite a good idea. Loved Ncuti and Millie and think the pair will work well together. Looking forward to the new series.
