Hearing "We Are the Doctors" in its rightful place is so satisfying.

I know right? It's blasphemy that this was cut to put an awkwardly edited Majestic Tale.

Link in the description for the full episode! Every year I would make a new version of this edit, now I finally feel it has reached a good enough quality for me to publish it! The Day of the Doctor had many of its original tracks removed and replaced by old ones in the final edit like “The Majestic Tale” replacing “We are the Doctors” and “The Wedding of River Song” replacing “Song For Four”, the beautiful track Gold created for Tom Baker’s appearance. This is an attempt to restore what was intended by Murray Gold for the episode. I’ve restored almost every Gold track. Only exceptions are “I.M Foreman”, parts of “He Was There” and parts of “Who Are You?”. For all those I thought the broadcast version was better so I left it as is. For the rest, Murray Gold’s intention was, in my opinion, better than what we had on the broadcast version. I hope you will enjoy it! Happy 60th anniversary! Oswin

Woah this is so much better than what we got! One of my slight issues with the actual episode is the bias towards series 5-7 music, and while it is part of the Moffat/Smith Era, the amount of RTD era references like bringing back Tennant and Billie Piper and exploring the time Time War and Galifrey really leant itself to being accompanied by some RTD era motifs. Also - do we know why they made the changes to the music during post production? Excellent work btw!
@OswinPond
@OswinPond 8 месяцев назад
Thank you! Day did have a tons of reference to the RTD era music wise. There's around 7 or 8 variations of "The Doctor's theme", 1 variation of Rose's theme, 3 variations of The Doctor Forever (Ten's theme), 1 variation of an old Waters of Mars track, 1 variation of Doomsday, multiple This is Gallifrey callbacks, The Dalek theme from Series 4 and even the Slitheen theme is in there! Some of them were cut and can only be found on the CD (or my edit!) but most of them are still in the episode. If I recall correctly Gold said Moffat made the changes because he loved I am the Doctor too much, but I'm not sure if that was exactly that. The production of the special was also quite rushed so it's possible they didn't enjoy some of the music and Gold didn't have time to do reshoot? Just a speculation.

Amazing work, bravo. I imagine some of the tracks would have had more work done to them before being put in the episode, as they just feel slightly out of place, I wonder what caused them to ditch so many good new great tracks though?

@OswinPond
@OswinPond 3 месяца назад
@@MysterySeeker Really I thought it was one of the easiest to splice haha. Because you can time it using the "I am the Doctor" present in both the track and episode! Also I managed to include The Fez and the Portal finally, another cut track which featured a Pandorica, Doomsday and Doctor's theme variation, that one was so hard to make it fit

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've never heard about the situation with the soundtrack in this episode before now. So, how exactly did you know what to base the intended tracks on? How did you re/create them?
@OswinPond
@OswinPond 8 месяцев назад
Not dumb at all! The intended tracks are on the CD. I removed the music from the episode for those scenes and replaced it with the intended ones from the official album. As to how I knew, they are mostly obvious. For exemple "Song For Four - Home" is obviously played over the 4th Doctor appearance and 11th's speech about his home. I had to play with it to make it synched perfectly but it was fairly straightforward since after all the musics were composed for the scenes.
@DoctorVision
@DoctorVision 8 месяцев назад
I am particularly disappointed that We Are the Doctors and Song for Four/Home didn't make it into the final cut as they work so well - granted, I know the latter was used later on, but still. It just reinforces my assumption that Moffat has a weird fetish for I Am the Doctor as he feels the need to use it as frequently as he can, which is all well and good but it felt oversaturated by the end and ruined my enjoyment of the track. Fortunately, Murray Gold produced so many variations we weren't subjected to the same track incessantly.
@OswinPond
@OswinPond 8 месяцев назад
I agree, it's the two that really should have stayed in. They fit so well and work so much better than what we got in the episodes. Both thematically and editing wise

As cool as some of these are (like Song for Four, Rose’s Theme and the more prominent use of This is Gallifrey), I actually prefer the versions we got in the actual Special: We are the Doctor sounds good but I feel like a more epic arrangement of it would be needed for that scene, otherwise The Majestic Tale just hits so much harder. While Home is a really good variant of The Majestic Tale, I think the one we got instead just suited the ending better. I feel like starting off with a more dreamlike and mysterious track before culminating to The Majestic Tale when the rest of the Doctors became clear elevated the scene far more than just starting off with a version of it when Eleven was about to exit the TARDIS.
@OswinPond
@OswinPond 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment! Really disagree there, especially for those two examples because I noticed something was wrong with them in the Broadcast version before even knowing they were not intended. For "We Are the Doctors" I find the crescendo much more compelling. There's an actual build up to the Doctors moving. The track starts slow, just like the frozen painting and the more the painting starts to move the faster the track gets, it's just superb. In the Broadcast they just used A Christmas Carol OST then "Majestic Tale" appears without build-up or fanfare, you lose some of the epicness of the scene. And then during the slowdown match (which sadly I couldn't show in the video for copyright purposes), using the end of "I am the Doctor" just feels a bit simple / comical and doesn't really match what we see on the screen. "We Are the Doctor" fits so much better with how epic it is. And it also saves you from having 3 different tracks tackled into the scene with questionable editing. For "Song for Four", I've always found the use of Wedding of River's theme completely inappropriate. I remember being so confused in the theatre when I saw this "Is River gonna show up?" lol. On top of that when they're talking about Gallifrey you actually hear the Earthly / Human Wedding theme that you hear in many movies, or IRL and it just feels so wrong since the scene is not connected to any wedding in any way. Plus I find "Song for Four" much more hopeful with the use of acoustic Guitar instead of the long sad strings of "Wedding of River Song". I do agree about the dreamy sequence at the end, it honestly work better in the episode, but then "Majestic Tale" shows up and it just doesn't work, the editing feels choppy and ending the last shot with the end of "I am the Doctor" is again a bit too simple / comical for me, whereas "Home" ends on a triumphant note that concludes the episode perfectly! And just like "We are the Doctor", it also saves you from having 3 different tracks tackled into the scene with questionable editing. But it's all subjective of course :p
@caderen5624
@caderen5624 8 месяцев назад
@@OswinPond Oh I absolute agree with some of those, I do like how Murray gave The Curator his own theme (and the Synths are a nice touch since the 4th Doctor’s Era primarily used it) and the further use of This is Gallifrey was indeed far more fitting. As for the ending bit, I do agree that the ending is a bit abrupt as the scene just kinda fades and the music just abruptly ends, I do wish that Gold found a way to have the Score end with a more satisfying sting. As for the editing, I do find the ending shot a bit awkward though its mostly due to the fact that its clear most of the Doctors are just pasted on there and they either look dead inside or (the few that are actually there) just stand awkwardly, I feel like a pan up towards Gallifrey with some small final few notes from the Score would have been more impactful.
@OswinPond
@OswinPond 8 месяцев назад
@@caderen5624 Good call for the synths! When i was talking about the edit I was talking about the score edit where they just glue tracks together, but you're right the actual edit is also quite mediocre in those scenes lol (especially the painting scene)
@DoctorVision
@DoctorVision 8 месяцев назад
To be fair, had they used the full original score as intended, you probably wouldn't be saying that as the replacement tracks used are so synonymous with the actual episode it makes it weird hearing the original, intended tracks in its place.
