Doctor Who 1x7 Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, Spoiler Review. Theories, & Ending Explained as we get a returning villain! Before you watch Who Culture, you can check out reaction! The episode starts with the Doctor and Ruby seeking answers from UNIT about the mysterious woman who has been following the Doctor throughout his timeline. This woman has appeared in various forms, such as a portrait, an ambulance, and a hiker. The Doctor suspects that she might be his granddaughter, Susan.
UNIT reveals that they have a Time Window, which allows the Doctor and Ruby to relive the moment Ruby was abandoned on Christmas Eve 2004. They discover that the TARDIS was present at the scene, but it is hidden within a cloud. The Doctor realizes that the woman was pointing at the TARDIS, not him. Meanwhile, Susan, who has been working with UNIT, starts to behave strangely. She mentions the Pantheon, a group of powerful gods, and reveals that the God of Death, Sutekh, is behind everything. The episode ends with a cliffhanger, as Ruby stands in front of her birth mother, and the Doctor faces the terrifying realization that Sutekh, an ancient and powerful enemy, has returned to destroy him and everyone he loves. The episode sets up an epic finale, with the Doctor facing his most dangerous enemy yet, and the fate of the universe hanging in the balance.

It'll be interesting to see if that relationship frays and fractures throughout the seasons. The Doctor's absolute morality and UNIT's purpose have always seemed like an awkward partnership to me. Hell, speaking as a member of the human race who happens to live on this planet, I still think Harriet Jones was right. And that's even before The Master showed up to emphasise the consequences of The Doctor's actions.

@@varunvijay9293 The 4th Doctor said that even the Time Lords (who were still a force to be reckoned with at that point) could not stop Sutekh, and that it took 740 of his own kind to stop him. The Doctor only managed to prevent him from escaping his prison. Sutekh could control people (including the Doctor) and kill with the force of his mind while on a different planet.

The same actor voiced Sutekh in 1975 - he also voiced the Beast in the Satan Pit/Impossible Planet so im guessing they’re connecting Sutekh to the Beast, especially with Carla referring to it as the Beast when it first started to appear.

I reckon with all the death and destruction that’s happened throughout the events of the time war, the pandorica, Trenzelore, the flux and any other tragic disaster the TARDIS has been through, all that pain and suffering must have left a big hole in it’s defences for Sutekh to slip through.

I'm really happy I spent time before the 60th Anniversary specials to watch the Tom Baker era. "Pyramids of Mars" definitely prepped me for the final moments of the episode and made me giddy (probably the most giddy about seeing a returning DW foe since John Simm's return in "World Enough and Time")

The villian makeup has been really cool and I think this is some of the scariest we have seen Doctor Who. This is an emotionally vulnerable doctor too (he isn’t the all-knowing badass that we are used to) so his losses will feel even more heavy!

I've been rewatching new who and tbh, he never was all knowing. Clever enough to occasionally badass through it and knowledgeable sure but he's definitely had beyond his fair share of being wrong and not knowing which is something I find myself relishing in my rewatch because him getting out even with a few losses is something I do love about the character

Ms. Flood = Rain, or a Storm. Ruby makes snow, like a snowstorm, and Sutekh dries people out enough to turn to dust. If the two of them get together (Ruby and Ms. Flood) they will make enough moisture to end Sutekh. Then they will reveal Ms. Flood is Susan, and Ruby is his Great-Granddaughter.

Mrs Flood is played by Anita Dobson who plays Angie in Eastenders (80s) they are known to have some of the most classic and memorable moments on the show- idk who or what Mrs Floods intentions are however I do know the actress is a very talented with very diverse acting abilities due to deep plots/storylines. I’m very much looking forward to what that entails:)

the reason Rose Noble was so happy to see the 15th doctor is because he and her uncle (14) weren't split when they met her. to her (and to the doctor) both her uncle and 15 are the person that met Rose Noble and spent time with her in The Star Beast special. the only difference is that the doctor is now two people instead of one, but both doctors were the person that helped save her mom's life. 15 hasn't been cut off from everything the previous doctors did, he has all the same memories and experiences up until the split, including the connection to Donna and Rose Noble.

Yeah I thought that was a weird take. The 15th Doctor is also the 14th Doctor and got to know Rose. We also have to assume the Doctor has many interactions we don't see or he'd be years old not thousands of years. Rose may now have met with many of the other Doctors as well, she could be buddies with River or Amy other Rose. I thought it was cool they way they showed Susan in makeup from other adventures we weren't privy to.

Shot in the dark Theory Ruby is Susan the doctors granddaughter her mother is Jenny (the clone from doctors daughter) who is also Ruby's neighbor. Like Donna passing the time lord stuff to Rose. The timeless child is/was apart of the Pantheon. The doctor passed a part of the timeless child to Jenny and then to Rose which will explain the snow that appears around her. Reasoning 1. Susan was in one of 14th doctors specials (crappy reasoning I know). 2. In this episode the doctor said Susan is from a kid the doctor has not had yet or he does not know yet this works with Jenny because he from what I know still thinks she is dead 3. The reasoning for the timeless child being apart of the Pantheon in some and it being passed down in some way is because on another video someone mentioned that besides the neighbor only other characters to break the 4th wall are some of the Pantheon and the doctor (funny enough the 4th doctor broke the 4th wall) she could just be another Pantheon like the trickster but I want to stretch this crack pot theory out. I know this theory is out there but if by chance I'm right I want proof of it

For me this is the best first part for a finale since World Enough and Time I really enjoyed the episode a lot and I like that they’re bringing in a classic villain who is less known as opposed to going with a popular choice, very excited for next week I’ve really enjoyed the series overall, feels like the doctor who I used to love and Ncuti is really good in the role, the only one I didn’t fully enjoy was Rogue but even that episode had some great moments

What a fantastic episode. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I thought Sutekh might be returning but I still felt the shock factor. I feel hugely empathetic towards Susan Triad; it seems that Sutekh completely used and possessed a very ordinary, very nice woman. Harriet's harbinger speech was bloody terrifying. I don't think we've ever seen Kate so scared. Who is Mrs.Flood? She seemed evil here but there's just enough ambiguity, I think, to turn that around again. What if Flood is Susan and comes to save the day? But, only after letting her grandfather suffer with Sutekh a little bit for abandoning her!? She certainly seems to be a timelord since she spoke about "hiding away" in a way that mirrored the doctor's explanation of regeneration to Ruby. Sutekh has rubies in his head. I really hope for Ruby's sake that she's not Sutekh's child 😅

THAT EPISODE WAS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! This is a master class in how to build suspense perfectly! The music was amazing, the performance from everyone were amazing, the pacing was spot on, the mystery of Ruby Sunday and Susan Twist meshing together was spectacular, the Practical sets and makeup were top-notch, the CGI and VFX are the best Doctor Who has ever had, Ncuti keeps being a top tier doctor, and to be blunt this is the most fun I've had with a season of Doctor Who in a long time! 1000/10 episode! Bring on the season finale "Empire of Death" ASAP!

Went back and watched the Tom Backer serial Pyramids of Mars immediately after. I realize they’ve been dropping hints all season as to where this was leading. There’s almost the exact conversation and scene between Tom Baker’s doctor and Sarah Jane about her knowing the future exists because she was from there and then going to the decimated earth to show her what would happen if they didn’t act. The way Rogue describes decimated the dimensionality of the Tardis is the same as the archaeologists brother when he enters. I’m sure there’s other Easter eggs all by the way telegraphing exactly where this was headed.

Sutekh IS connected to Egyptian Mythology, his other names include "Set" or "Seth", the Ancient Egyptian God of trickery and chaos. Set was also the God of the desert, storms, and warfare. The biggest mystery about Set, however, is his appearance. All Ancient Egyptian Gods and Goddesses had an animal associated with them, but to this day no one knows for sure what animal Set represents. He has the head of SOME kind of animal, but which animal no one is sure, only theories have been made.

Ruby is Rose Tyler’s baby. Hand Doctor - the Father - can’t be fixed is a right abusive git and will become the Valeyard as per prophecy : between 12th and final incarnation. Smith Dr being the last of the original “as seen on tv” cycle (due to War and Hand docs renumbering). This explains why Valeyard interested in stealing (earlier from his perspective) regenerations. He has none. Ruby is Susan’s Mother. Mrs Flood is Susan. Who will regenerate into Sian Clifford. Therefore Ruby and Donna’s Rose instinctively hold hands. They’re both related to the meta crisis! Therefore Susan is both The Doctor’s granddaughter but not the granddaughter! Everyone’s happy 😂 (joke - apart from the Clifford thing)

I think they revealed in a behind-the-scenes video that the Time Window scenes were made by 3D-filming the actual church location with a Lidar scanner and then projecting it on three walls, barely any CGI needed.

Tennant's Doctor is my favorite, and I am glad there is a version of him out there. But my fear of having a Doctor with Ten's face around at the same time as having a new Doctor as the face of the show is that viewers will start to view the Doctor not as one person who changes physiology and adjusts their personality but as a whole new person. I mean, before The Split, many fans had a tough time with that concept. I say all that to say I get why Rose was excited to see the Doctor. This is the same Doctor her mom had all her adventures with. It is also the same Doctor that 14 had all his adventures with. I am sure both her mom and uncle have told her about those adventures. (I am not sure if I am making sense.) Anyway, I really loved this episode and have really enjoyed this season. I can't wait to see the finale.

Trust me guys, it would be super worth it to give the classic Tom Baker serial ‘Pyramids of Mars’ a watch, not for a video or anything but just in your free time. It’s available for free on Tubi, in Season 13. It’s cheap and goofy like all of Doctor Who was at that time, but the story/writing holds up really well and it’s a fun and exciting watch regardless. It has Sarah Jane too, in her prime. It’ll tell you all you need to know about Sutekh.

This reveal shows how lazy the showrunners have been over the last few years. They really have relied on and overused the Daleks, Cybermen and The Master with their big bads. Sutekh is such a deep dive into the history and lore of Doctor Who that I never would have predicted that. RTD keeps proving why he was the right choice to revive the series TWICE.

I like the Master as much as the next guy, and I think the Daleks and Cybermen are fine when the episodes actually engage with the concepts that made them scary and interesting in the first place instead of just a horde of faceless baddies with guns, but come on! There's so many fun and cool villains to choose from! Have some courage and get weird with it!

Brilliant episode. Sutekh was a villain in 1975s Pyramids of Mars with Tom Baker. He’s from a race of aliens who the Ancient Egyptians worshipped as gods. That’s why the gods have animal heads. Sutekh was imprisoned by his brother Horus & in Pyramids of Mars Sutekh is trying to escape. There is a scene in this story which is similar to the scene in the Devil’s Chord when the Doctor takes Ruby to an alternate 2024. Btw I live near Cheetham Hill !!

To answer your question, some Classic Who fans did predict Sutekh, but the reveal was still amazingly done!I was very glad to see it worked for you despite not knowing who he was :) Also, I didn't mind that Rose reacted to 15 like she knew him, even if they technically never met. She's very familiar with 14, and she probably knows and understands that they're still the same person. Also, Donna and 14 did meet 15, and they could have told Rose about him.. Yeah, they couldn't in the past, but it's been about a year in-universe since the events of the 60th, so she had plenty of time to learn and hear about the Doctor. That being said, her presence in the episode was a bit weird (in the sense that it was entirely unexplained how/why she was even working for UNIT at 16 while her mum isn't even there), and she was once again under-utilised imo.. But oh well, was still nice to see her again. Can't wait for next week, this was a great part 1 set-up, hopefully RTD can land it in part 2.
