Just wanted to take a moment to say, "Thanks", from a southern neighbor in Montana! Your vids inspired me to do me first NV4500. Tore it apart and just about had the dry heaves from anxiety, then I came across your series, and the rest is history. BTW, you may already know this, but installing the assembled main shaft with the rear bearing already pressed on does work well. Mine went in without a hitch!
@@groutaone I bought it used and discovered in was in need of a complete rebuild. Mine is actually an early GM model for 2wd with the brake drum on the rear. It's going into a 56 GMC with a 402 big block chev. Having that driveline brake allows me to retain the original floor mounted hand brake lever. The original dif has a 4:10 gear, so looking forward to having that 5th gear! Again, great tutorials! I was pretty intimidated when I broke the NV open. Have done a couple of Muncie 4-spds, but this trans is at a whole different level. I just got off of the covid19 quarantine after 2 weeks of the virus, which really sucked. Like a 10-day flu. This project really helped me pass the time. All is well now. BTW, I really appreciate your scripture at the end of each vid.
In all gears accept 4th. Shimmed it tight then backed it off till is spun freely with a little play. I had two shim packs with my rebuild parts. The shins were paper thin not razor thin. All bearings were new. I rebuilt it a few months back and it had the same wine. I Had replaced the input, counter and the bearings for both Shafts. After I reinstalled it, it whines, then after a month the third gear synchro broke apart and I could no longer shift into third. I then (Just) rebuild the main shaft with new synchros and the necessary bearings. Gears are all good, shifts and drives nice. Fluid is GM 135$ 4quarts.
@@localsource I think I would rule out main shaft bearings because 4th is quiet, does it turn freely by hand in 1,2,3 and 5? Could maybe turn it with a drill and listen with a stethoscope for the approximate sound location.
It installed it now. M going to run the truck a bit. See where it gets me. If it’s a tight bearing it could wear in...? It did turn freely in all gears. It wasn’t spinning like a top but with a firm grip it’s spun well. There was no fluid in it while it was on the bench so I’m not sure I would have been able to replicate the sound. I’m guessing the counter shaft is a little Tight.
