Dodge Ram ABS, Brake Light & Speedometer Fix! (EASY) 

I watched this video on Friday afternoon, by Saturday morning I purchased and installed the ABS speed sensor on my 1999 Dodge 1500 truck. Thanks for the video. You done good kid.

Thank you Elliot, I followed your youtube instructions and replaced my speed sensor. It corrected my problem on my 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins diesel of ABS, Brake light fault and also no speedometer readings. It took less than 1 hour after buying the sensor. Thanks again!!

Thanks man it just happened to me at 70 mph needless to say I was panicking but nothing serious was failing oil pressure, battery, ECT looked at 10 to 15 and then you hit exactly what was up thanks again you have saved me so much time that something don't have much of.

Before throwing parts at your vehicle, make sure ALL your fuses are in the fuse box EVEN SPARES. I had ABS, Check Engine, and Brake warning lights on, and couldn't fix it for 2 years. I replaced ABS sensor, flushed differential oil, replaced EGR valve etc. I read someone say that a fuse could be the culprit. I popped a fuse into the empty "Spare" fuse slot, and suddenly the lights went away! I wasn't able to smog and register my truck for 2 years because of a fuse! I was happy and mad at the same time when the lights disappeared.

Thanks Elliot for the post. My ABS, Brake lights were intermittently staying on and each time they did my speedometer did not work 0-20mph. Just swapped the ABS speed sensor and so far so good. Thanks

You are correct, mine is a 2004 v6 3.7 with manual transmission. I upgraded my diff to a ls diff and now my abs light and brake light are both on, after doing some research I came to find out that I have to reprogram my computer to set my new pinion and tire size. IT WOOORKED!!! Here are the details: I took a screenshot of the sensor label from your video and went to Advance. You're right. The part was $29.99 at advance and $14.99 on Amazon. Wanted it today so I could take advantage of the inspiration that hit. Followed instructions exactly and boom, ABS light off, BRAKE light off, my odometer is now reading at low miles and get this- I realized that my brake pedal even feels different (better). Like a brake pedal is supposed to feel. Thank you so much for the upload.

THANK YOU! symptoms... break light on, ABS light on, speedometer does not function. Replaced the sensor (18$ autozone). Working now. 1/2" deep socket and 15 minutes under the truck. Thank you sir for the video! Happy Goat owner again (wont last long) Ha

Ty I hope I can fix my husbands old Dodge. Trying to sell it & this has been exact problem his truck has entire time he drove it. He has early onset dementia so just used an app but now can no longer drive much less fix anything. Will post if it works!!

HOLY CRAP! I think this is what my problem is! My code checker said I had a bad speed sensor so I replaced both of them on the transmission and still get the code WITH all the same things on the dash that you mentioned. Didn't occur to me about the one on the rear axle! 😵 My truck is a 04 ram 1500 so I think it will be similar. DANG, why didn't I check RU-vid before now! THANKS for sharing this! 👍

Did you have control module runnin all the time symptoms also or just lights on the dash.? I've replaced module and relay no change, guess I'll do the speed sensor

I have a 1996 Ram 4x4 5.9 liter. Had transmission rebuilt and when I got it back my speedometer cruise control and overdrive stopped working. So on a 1995 which speed sensor runs the speedometer? The one in the rear end or the one in the transfer case? Or could I have a different problem since overdrive doesn't work. The transmission shop messed something up and will not fix my truck. Took it back twice and last time they unhooked the my abs speed sensor on the rear end. Shop is called The Tranny Shop in Gretna Nebraska.

So I some what have the same problem I think? The abs light and break light will some on, but only after I hit a certain speed, but my speedo still works fine. Could it be in the process of going out or be something diffrent.

I have a 1998 without ABS. 5.9L-12V. Speedometer is working. My vehicle had a brake light come while driving but it would cycle back off, sometimes with a re-release while off and sometimes with lift of the foot (cable?) Now, for several days, my BRAKE light comes on after 5-6 miles, some time after highway speed in mild weather. I had to add some brake fluid but have no reference for how long it took to go down. I don't see any streak on the rear tires from a drum leak. ***** When I park, maybe after cooling, the brake light stay off. It has what looks like the same unit on the differential. Just happened. QUESTIONS: 1) Is this the same problem even for non-ABS? 2) Is it the same unit as the 98 with ABS? 3) Could it be air, requiring a bleed? (Will do any way.) 4) Can worn drums cause? Tested drums for rub, seems fine. 5) Does "back up/BRAKE" adjust work on this model? Any other advice appreciated.

While the warning lights were on, could you hear the abs controller running even while the key and engine were off?

I replaced the wheel bearings on the front of my 2009 Ram, and that took care of the ABS/Traction control lights

Awesome video! I changed the speed sensor on my 99 dodge Dakota but the problem didn't go away (ABS light still on and speedometer still not working) sometimes the brake light will turn off. Any idea on what the problem could be?

I change both front and back sensors and it did when away but it came the light came again

Pulling mine out it snapped off what would be the best way to get the bottom half out

Thanks for the vid! I have some good u-pull it yards in my town. I went there instead of ordering new. I tried to pull 7 & got 3. Trouble I had was harness wouldn't come off 1, both screws turned together on 2 (can get them out, just a lil more difficult). The biggest problem is the sensor wouldn't come out. They would spin, but not come up. Forcing one with a crowbar broke it, and the bottom part stayed in the pumpkin - the sensor has a nice big magnet and copper coil inside. I don't have any idea how to get a stuck one out - pb blaster? Luckily on my truck it came out pretty well and the first used sensor I tried took care of the issue. Oh and I don't think I was charged for them! They rang up the bigger items I had and glossed over the small stuff. Good luck all! P.s. My '99 2500 has 84k miles and it happened after pulling a full 12x6 uhaul 5 hours.

Thank you so much. I had the same problem as everyone else. Abs and brake light on and the speedo won’t wouldn’t work until 20mph. Just replaces it and fixed all the problems!!

Have a 2003 Dakota. Changed speed sensor on rear pig (5 speed manual) Checked all elect connections, opened main fuse box as well as the one in the cab only found one bad fuse (air cond)) and checked all wiring connections including front ABS sensor connections.. Found all visual grounds to frame , took apart and cleaned. Checked codes, three bad, P0440, P0522, and Poo38. None of these seem to be affecting speedometer.,brakes or ABS. Whats the issue?

PO500 code is popping up. ABS and check engine light are on. Speedometer doesn’t work. I replaced this sensor and it didn’t fix the problem. Any idea what else it could be?

I Have a 98.5 24V, Thank you soooo much for info, my ABS light and Brake light came on, speedo would only work above 15mph ish, 1st lights ever had come on since new, 125k on it now, was in middle of Yukon when it pulled this stunt, drove another 500 mile to whitehorse and Napa had one (a miracle at that) for 30.00 thanks to your utube I watched in Whitehorse was able to put this through the uprights, drove another 3k miles then it would loose speedometer from approx 55mph to zero and only Abs light would come on when speedo dropped. Only did this like 3 time. And seems fine now, I am holding my breath now .any Ideas? Thinking Napa sensor may be culprit but not sure since it acted different then before.. Thanks for help

Hi I have a question on 2006 dodge ram 3500 cumins slt 4x4, speed auto meter won't work. Now the 4wd light come on and off and sometime 4wd engage with low speed. Took to mechanic they are ran the code and told my husband changing both battery,but won't fixed the problem. Now it even won't engage the gear and the N light come on all the time. Any ideas ? Well bummer, just replaced mine (purchased same part as you on Amazon) and it DID NOT correct the issue, Hmmmm. I really enjoyed your video, and I was able to replace mine (2001 Dodge 1500) just like you did yours with ease. Any idea what else might be the issue.
