With all these amazing announcements lately, Sony A7S III, Canon R5 R6, Fuji XT4 etc. Does micro four thirds have a place in the future of the camera industry? They aren't even smaller cameras anymore. GH5 is heavier than all those full frame cameras. Stabilization is catching up. Let's see how the Panasonic GH5s fairs against the Fuji XT4 in low light. The results actually surprised me.

Is it just me or did the GH5s wipe the floor with the Fuji today? lol. The GH5 looks more pleasing in most of these shots because it's brighter and has higher contrast. However, the Fuji appears more detailed and with higher dynamic range.

Fuji is the Japanese Leica. I use an X-H1 for my studio and outdoor portraiture work. The colors and film simulations are simply gorgeous. I just sold my Canon M50 to buy a Panasonic G95 for my everyday drive around shooter and primary video camera. You simply cannot beat all the features the G95 has for those applications for the price. Like you said the Panasonic just works. It gets out of your way and doesn't require night classes to learn how to fiddle the 10,000 dials and settings needed to get good video from the Fuji.

The Fuji did much better. The Panasonic was almost washed out and if you used standard (provia) on the T4 with maybe an S curve it would have looked even better.

@What Are You On About It isn't brown, but I get why he is saying it. The black looks a bit more black on the panasonic, the fuji the Tshirt has a slight white cast, if that's the correct way to describe it.

@@proksalevente It is just the profile. He uses the Eterna profile, which is the most flat profile (apart from F-Log). If he was using Provia for example, or if he would processed the Eterna (which it is quite suitable for), you would get your deep black also on the Fuji.

@@dlavian5400 I know post processing would fix it, but we are comparing SOOC results here. I don't hate the fuji, I just dislike the value proposition of it. It is too expensive, the lenses are too expensive for a college student. MFT is for us with a limited budget, and it still provides good-enough results in my book. If the xt4 was priced like the xt-3, I would honestly consider it instead of buying a newer MFT camera.

@@proksalevente But Eterna is not the only profile. If you do not like a rather flat picture, than you should use something else. I myself do not like this flat look, too. And neither do I video processing. So, when I film, I use Provia or Velvia for more contrast and saturation. That is a little bit a problem of this channel. It feels rather, that the settings, which are accidently used in his videos are compared, than the cameras and their actual capabilities themselves.

I use the G9 for nature photography, and it's a great system if you have to carry your gear in a backpack for a hike of several miles. The size of the lenses is what really won me over. the camera my be about the same size but the lenses are a huge weight and size saving advantage. And I'm an amateur so I don't need to impress anyone.

I think this shows what a lot of people who focus on "DoF equivalency" don't highlight, toneh equivalency is only on the blur. Using a F.95 lens vs a F2, thats over two stops wider, it was always going to do better in the dark if he opened them both up all the way. Maybe T-stop was better on the voigtlander too. I think for his street stuff, the Olympus E-M5 III with maybe their 12mm is his ideal setup for low weight, user error aside.

Surely, that's it for the Fuji now? The GH5s footage just looks more pleasing throughout this. Fuji looks like it's being filmed through a stocking. I continue to be confused by the perseverance with a bad camera. The amount of times you've complained about the Fuji and the auto focus continues in every video to be absolute bobbins, but you keep using it!

I'll give you 95 reasons to stay with M43. All 95 lenses, many of which are awesome, sharp, and relatively inexpensive. BTW, most work wonderfully in AF. Fuji currently has about 30 and many of them don't focus well (as you know) in video. Also, they're less available used and more expensive. There's my only reasoning to never go Fuji.

My understanding is the GH5S is one of better low-light consumer cameras on the market because of its low 10MPs sensor. Beats even most full-frame cameras.

I agree, right from the start the Panasonic looked better. The Fuji wasn't sharp enough, maybe user error but I liked the GH5 footage better.

@Mac Nope the highlights are not clipping. They are brighter for sure but all this can be changed with both cameras by changing the grades you do and colour profiles you choose. I think the biggest difference is in the shadows. Panasonic is known for having a higher amount of colour in the shadows. Fuji (and Canon for that matter) have shadows which are more "black". This is something that even transcends into raw files. Its all about your preference.

The GH5S is just a workhorse video camera, really happy with mine. Not many Mirrorless cameras apart from the A7S series that are built for just video first, really shows

The Fuji's increased dynamic range makes things look a little flatter in this specific scenario (a weird simultaneous win AND lose), and oddly the GH5 looked better in the dark shower.

I think the gh5s gains additional stops of dynamic range when shooting in VLog, at least that is the case with the gh4. Also it goes from looking like a video camera to a cinema camera.

Casey, the biggest mistake you're making by dismissing the M43 system is the power of SpeedBoosters, especially since you're now using manual focus on your lenses. If you put the Metabones Speedbooster XL on your GH5s you get nearly a full frame image at a crop factor of about 1.15!!! You can put a 16mm Sigma prime on that and you'll have about an 18mm lens, a light set up and excellent codex, Panasonic image. Alas, only lacking IBIS. You can put that XL on your Olympus and you'll get great IBIS performance too! The trick is in the Speedbooster! You've never tested that! ;) I can see that you'll find the Perfect Camera in ether GH5s or Olympus with the Speedbooster XL. Camera Canada, get on it!!!! LOL!

I'm surprised he's still toying with the GH5s given lack of IBIS. I'm still on the cusp of dropping $997 on a G9. The bang for the buck can't be beat, especially if you already have a lot of m43 glass.

Looks way better. Really hope Panasonic comes out with a solution for AF. I really enjoy and love their cameras. The AF is really the only downside. The little GH5/S may be heavier but it won’t overheat in the surface of Venus. Just look at the Fuji and all the FF options. They still can’t do it for whatever reason!

It just has more contrast, simple to add in post on the Fuji if you need to. Also, most of the Lumix shots had a brigther exposure, people tend to always prefer the brighter image even if it's clipping some highlights. The skintones on the Fuji look better imo.

The Fuji was under-exposed by at least a stop compared to the GH-5 at the beginning, and at the end. Different camera makes can have different meter sensitivities relative to each other. Throwing in different sensor sizes, that's another variable. Lenses make yet another variable. Overall the GH-5 looked better. We learned nothing.

I can almost sense the “M43 is dead” video coming soon at toneh 1.4 in front of a lake. Pany GH5s, G9, and Oly EM and the cream of the Leica lenses and still there’s no love for M43. Most people would be stoked with one of any of those cameras and lenses! It’s time to move on and sell it all ... It’s like watching a long drawn out break up happening on screen 😟. Let those lovely little cameras go to someone who will get enjoyment from using M43 as you once did 👍🏻

GH5S is Toneh at 1.4 (as he said in the video) and X-t 4 on 2.0, of course it is brighter at the same shutter/ISO. Later in the video at T2.0 the brightness isn´t that much different. Fuji tends to be a little darker than other cameras on the same ISO value, but not that much.

Thank you for doing a very extensive, honest review of the xt4. I was looking at it when it was announce, I'm so glad I didn't go down that path. It appears to overheat faster than the R5, AF on par with Panasonic (not a compliment), IBIS between Sony and Panasonic, great colors straight out of camera, and a very limited video centric lens selection, all this at a full frame a7III/z6 price. Overall very disappointing.

I'm waiting for the new GH6 announcements hopefully coming this month. Praying the autofocus is completely revamped. However the newer G9 and g95 cameras appear to be a lot better then the g85's. Death from defocus (DFD) why you do it panasonic why ?

There's no contest here. Look at 6:25 for the low-light advantage of the Fuji, and the composure/dynamic range and colours of the Fuji at 10:55, not to mention shallower DOF. The first scene the Fuji looked a little softer, I'm assuming its sharpening was off when GH5's was on, but even there the Fuji still just looked better imo.

Sensor size vs quality is relative and marketing-driven. Fullframe's larger body size and heavier lenses reduces overall adoption of dedicated cameras down among younger generations, AKA, future consumer base. APS-C may be the best compromise. But companies have to devolop lighter pro-quality APS-C lenses. They Won't now as they want to push larger clunkers at higher prices. Sigma is just begining to shake that up with their smaller lighter 85mm.

Have two fullframe setups, but the little a6400 is my most used. Sigma APS-C 56mm is awesome, just wish their 16mm was smaller, lighter.

M43 has more lens selection than any apsc system including Fujifilm. There are so many weather sealed zoom lenses from m43. Camera manufacturers have never devoted its resources into making professional level apsc lenses. Once you are into their apsc system, they want to push you into full frame which has expensive and heavy lenses. That’s what m43 is all about. Lightweight and mobility as a system.

i've noticed what seems to be some inconsistencies in image quality, which i'm guessing has something to do with your export settings. maybe it's just the actual image quality, you can hopefully judge that better than me. the xt-4 and the samsung look like 4k upscaled from 1080p upscales from 240p. They don,t look pixelated per se, but they give you the whole "did you record that on a potato?"-vibe. something that neither the nikon had or any of the lumix cameras for that matter. they each look brilliant, super sharp, just not as well corrected (colorwise)

For me the biggest advantage is the lack of distortion on fuji. I switched to full frame from a g7 last year.. so it's hard to visually accept the micro four thirds image on wider lenses for me now and the panasonic gives you a grey Alien type melon. I keep debating if I could make the switch to fujifilm aps-c... lenses or lack there of is probably the biggest thing holding me back.

Try shooting in HLG then in resolve let it convert to rec709, all the dynamic range and colour accuracy will be much better! ;)

As a camera guy, if you have two cameras and one gives you better image quality, you tend to go for the better picture even if it's not the best camera for the task.. Or at least that's how I feel. I love how the GH5s operate but I'll take a full frame with me whenever possible.

I generally preferred the duller face tones on the Fuji. The Panny's background colors were WAY better in the shower. For that same reason the "right side" made me feel happier. Wait, that can't be possible. THAT is why I like Kneekon's; because like Sweden, they can be neutral without being dull. If any of my is500 Canon point-and-shoots were still alive it would give them both a run for their money when it comes to video! I always got compliments on videos I took with them. $150, and it was so small I often lost them. LOL

I thought the Panasonic honestly did better for exposure; I'm not sure about the noise in low-light. The Panasonic seemed sharper, but in lighter areas I could see a lot of noise movement... but the Fuji looked like it just anti--aliased as much as possible to smooth out the noise, but it was still there. Have to give the colors to the Fuji though. Too much red in the Panasonic. It's definitely a great camera, but that red. It's like it seeks it out and purposely saturates it beyond what's necessary. Otherwise, the Panasonic performance was very serviceable. I agree with you on the A7SIII... I think Fuji will get crushed in almost every area, except possibly dynamic range and color. Otherwise, on paper the A7SIII is... dare I say it... the perfect camera.

As a current GH5 (not S) user, and former GH4 user, I recognize that orange/yellow glow in skin tones. It drives me nuts. Unless I'm super diligent in exposure and lighting, which is impossible in run and gun situations, you get faces that are hard to correct in post without getting some banding and artifacts. I actually like the flatness of the Fuji, but it looks a little magenta to me compared to the orangyness of the Panny. The magenta/blue cast of Sony's color always bothered me too, but it looks like they solved that in the A7Siii.

Panny just needs to fix their autofocus. They should do hybrid autofocus like Sony. Sony does both phase-detect and contrast-detect autofocus and their number of contrast detection focus points is still like double the amount that Panny has.

The G100 is actually legit! Super compact and AF is not bad at all! Great price too! Fuji is a bit large for some when taking vlogging into consideration

I'm a m43 shooter the first shot looked better interestingly most comments disagree but It looked more plump and 3d like but your mistake with the panasonic is shooting in cine v should have been cine d or also turning down the saturation a smidge

All this video did was demonstrate the strengths of the Panasonic. The GH6 is not far away now and when that arrives, we will see Fuji slowly get closer to that camera, and just when it is almost as good... the GH7 will drop :) The biggest question I have, however, is will the GH6 have Time Of Flight Autofocus? Is Panasonic far enough along in development of the ToF sensor to finally release it. If they do put it in the GH6, it will cause a massive wave of people who were saying MFT is dead rushing to get into MFT. Time will tell.

I started using Fuji film back in the day because it was kinder and more accurate to the skin tones of people of color... maybe they paid that concept forward with its sensors...

I’m sorry dear, but here Panny beats Fuji hands down. Everyone is saying that Fuji ISO is fake, and we have another demonstration here. I have an XT-3 and a GH-5 and I have 1 EV difference consistently to get the same exposure.

Lens weight is a huge factor for me. Fuji lens are huge often making the lens + body way heavier than m4/3 and Sony setups

Only a couple minutes in, but personally I like the look of the panasonic more. Now at almost halfway in I like the Fuji more though. Most of the video I prefer the panasonic colors. The dynamic range on the fuji is def better though I think. I have a gx80/85,l because it's nice and smol :). How does the gh5 not have stabilisation though, mine does and I picked it partially for that. Smol and okay menu and buttons and many options for doing different things with it. The evf suuucks but I don't use that anyways. Aaaand I just do stills really, but I think bi have the option of pretty decent video :). M43 people def seem a bit alternative sometimes. But yeah, every system has it pros and cons, and people should just get what suits them best. And I think there's def a place/niche there for m43.
