Now watch all the people that rode the short bus to school say: there is nothing wrong with your car, piston slap/ ticking is normal for gen.2 and 3 engines, just drive the car with the ticking, replace your engine under warranty, so what if your car drastically loses its value, its only a small percentage of cars with the ticking engine, yada, yada, yada. This has been the same mantra 2018, 2019, and now 2020.. Guess what??? FORD DOES NOT HAVE A SOLUTION!!! There has been serious issues with the 2016- 2018 GT 350 ENGINES as well.. Serious oil consumption and replaced engines to name a few.. . I'M telling you right night..If Dodge finally produced the new Hemi Cuda to compete with the mustang and camaro with 470 to 700 horse power versions..It would outsell Mustang for the first time and put a strangle hold on the pony car, muscle car competition for sure....If Dodge would just listen to their fans and customers who are looking for new platforms for Challenger, Charger and a new Cuda...The Ford Mustang would be in trouble. Right now Ford does not have to fix their car because it does not have any competition from the Camaro anymore. The Charger and Challengers are in a muscle car class by itself. Ford knows that they have a lot of fan boys with big palm palms cheering for them and will buy their products despite the tick, shift fork issues, massive oil consumption in GT 350 etc..I'm gonna purchase the C8, , Wide Body Hellcat or Toyota Supra this summer... Cant go with the tick..
my 2020 GT just got it's tick (7k miles). as of right now, I regret not buying the camaro or maybe even a used C7. I get to see later what ford has to say, probably not much from what I've been reading.
I have a 2018 that I started noticing the tick around 4000 miles and it’s only gotten louder over time. I’m now about to hit 14,000 and have added ceratec on my last couple of oil changes but still have a pretty bad cold start tick. What I don’t get is how can an engine that literally sounds like it’s broken not have any drivability issues or loss of power. I’ve beaten the crap out of this thing on the daily purposely to see if it will blow and it just continues to run fine everyday but ticks away everyday
Guys this has been around since the first Coyote in 2011, my 2011 convertible GT does it when it warms up at low idle, it has 43000 miles now. If Ford has not solve the problem by now it is not going to happen. Enjoy your mustang and do not pay attention to the tick.
@@caffeinatedmotors I know it sucks, cuz mine has the tick as well. I've learned to be somewhat disgruntled, yet not too irked about it. All it does is stress me out too much. I want to enjoy my life before the world ends from an AOC climate catastrophe in 12 years. Or is it 11 now? Anyway, I found this stuff called "Ceratec" made by Liqui-Moly. I switched to QSUD 5w30, and I put in 1/2 bottle of Ceratec with every oil change....no more tick!
@@caffeinatedmotors The AOC comment was my sarcasm coming out. Do you want to know what the tick noise is? It's one of two things. Both which basically cause no serious harm to the vehicle. The exact same noise has been attributed to other high compression engines, like Duramax, Cummins, and Powerstrokes. In fact, even Toyotas Tacoma 3.5L V6 has it on occasion. Chevy put out a TSB for the same noise, and they believe it's caused by oil bubbling and popping under extreme pressure in high compression engines. However, with the Coyote V8, the noise is more related to oil pressure of the pump output itself. Ford in recent years has started using a computer controlled bypass valve on the engines oil pump, so idle oil pressure is very low in order to help with engine efficiency. If you look at oil pressure when the tick is present and when it's not, the tick tends appear when oil pressure is below 30psi most commonly at lower RPM ranges, and disappearing when the RPM is higher. The sound heard from this is most likely "Lazy" Hydraulic Lash Adjusters operating at low oil pressure. At those low pressures below 30psi, there at times may not be quite enough pressure to fully fill the HLA to maintain complete contact with the lifter arm. Those tiny gaps close during the cycle and a small tick is heard on occasion. It won't really harm the engine, since the gap is so tiny. However, alleviating the tick by using a very good oil additive to increase lubricity and smooth out operation by allowing the HLA to operate better at low oil pressures, will in fact help the HLA operation, and not just cover up the noise. There are some of us who are interested in trying to find a way to reprogram the oil pump to close the bypass more at idle RPM to maintain it above 30psi at all times to prevent this issue. Doing so shouldn't cause any problems with the engine. However, it may put more drag on the engine when the car is idling, and affect overall engine efficiency (ie, gas mileage). I personally wouldn't care, since most older V8's had mechanical bypass valves, and did idle with higher oil pressures.
2018 with 24,000 miles! Change my oil every 3,000 miles, run e85, drive it daily and drive it pretty hard! I have heard the tick In the beginning have been adding ceratec to oil every other oil change! I know a guy with 40,000 miles and has ran nitrous! Just drive the car and add some ceratec if it bothers you!
I have a 2019 with the tick. I bought an extended warranty and I also took it to ford just to document the issue. They of course said it’s normal but I feel better owning it with the warranty.
I have the tick but not exaggerated as yours . My friend with a gen 2 has the tick to way louder but i doubt it will fail . Keep it stock if your afraid of it failing I tuned mine 5k miles later still running strong . I got my tick at about 7xxx now with 13k . But there’s a difference between getting the tick new and getting it in the long run . Two different things
It's oil cavitation. Look it up. Also many other car makers do this also...mainly coming from diesels due to the high compression / high pressure oil pumps. It's sort of a flashing or bubbling in the oil and it makes a sort of popping or snapping sound. Mine did it since new on startup and once it got warm...it was whisper quiet. I changed my oil at 1,000 miles and it did it a couple of times when warm which kinda concerned me. After a couple of hundred miles after the oil change, it reverted back to it's normal thing of doing this at startup and then becoming quiet. Mine will change at startup if the AC is on, and then I turn the AC off and it's quiet. I'll have mine in Park at startup and it will be quiet at first and then when I shift into reverse it starts doing it. Strange huh? Its because the oil pressure changes when you shift into reverse. Why would it all of a sudden go from quiet to ticking with a shift of a gear? I'm telling you its in the oil. You're gonna work yourself all up for nothing. Just enjoy the car.
You are right that's exactly what it is. Several other manufacturers have put out tsbs about it. I owned a 2019 gt that ticked and I bought in to all the internet nonsense about piston slap or bearing failure Well flash forward I traded it in for a 2020 camaro ss and I just had the oil changed and guess what it has the typewriter tick but its very faint. Before that it was smooth as butter. Its an annoying noise but its harmless.
Tony Amarillas Do you understand what cavitation is? Cavitation is the formation of vapour bubbles in the oil.In a hydraulic system its catastrophic. In effect it is caused by oil actually changing state from a liquid to a gas due to negative pressure or when the oil reaches it vapour point. The bubbles of vapour will eventually implode and leave small cavities in the oil, hence the name cavitation. They do not explode as they are negative pressure when they do they implode with many tonnes of pressure per square inch, and this causes damage to metal surfaces if the bubbles are close to the metal when they implode. It is obviously then not oil cavitation otherwise it would have destroyed components in the engine rather quickly..
@@joeyfleming7626 The Hemi suffered the tick via its failed lifters. The mustang can attribute its tick to the rod bearings. PS: The Hemi's without MDS don't suffer, they're tough as coffin nails.
My car does that every now and then. I have almost 50,000 miles and I beat on it pretty bad. I don’t know man. It could be bad but then again it may not be. Mines been ticking since day one. 2 years later it still ticks every now and then.
Trevor Tyner haha thanks dude, my videos are so unscripted i actually end up having to edit a lot of it because of how many times i mess up lmao, but what you get’s the real me
That sound can be heard so well from the bottom end through that plastic oil pan, iv followed the tick very strictly. Videos and everything. Iv seen alot of forums, and alot of videos showing scratches on the cylinder walls which suggests the piston is bouncing back and forth. But Its so low it makes me believe the rod bearing tolerances are off and perhaps the rods are bouncing slightly on the crankshaft. But its so random, what a puzzle. My challenger RT has been in the shop for 7 days now, radio replacement due to bluetooth being defective. I feel your pain.
Both of my 2019’s have the tick. Took it to Ford and got the same response “it’s normal”. One of my cars is twin turbo and one is stock. I put Ceratec in both and have no more tick. Both engines run phenomenal. I do have the extended warranty on the stock car.
hey i'm genuinely wondering what mods your '18 had done, and what you had done before you had the tick. same on the '20, what mods have you done aside from the roush x if any, and did you start hearing the tick before or after the pipe swap or just both. thanks a lot. also wonderin' which oil you had use when the tick become more pronounced
I have a 2016 with 23913 miles on it the tick started after the last oil change at that mileage, after adding CERA TEC LIQUI MOLI it instantly got rid of it and the engine sounds fabulous, this is my 5th GT.
Yeah I don’t think it’s an issue. I’ve heard of way too many tick stories but no engines blowing because of it. I’ve also heard of many going many tens of thousands of miles without an issue with the tick. Just drive the car and don’t think about it lmao. Add ceratec if you’re really upset about it.
There's something important to acknowledge regarding the engine tick that most people aren't accepting. There's a lubrication issue. After the first oil change and as predictable as the sun rising in the east, the tick shows up or gets worse. This does not imply causation. Take matters into your own hands and get 10w-30 and two bottles of ceretec in there ASAP. Ford and other car manufacturers are straddled by rising government regulations and it warps decision making. - and engineers absolutely do not make the final decisions.
As many people say it's a piston slap I would argue that, there is no way that a piston would so loose in the cylinder to be able to twist and cause a slapping noise, also the ticking sound is high in pitch, there is no way such a high pitch noise would come out of the engine block, there is a few chambers between the cylinder and the outer wall of the the block filled with coolant and oil the sound would get muddy and less defined. this high pitch tick mush be coming out of the over head part of the engine ...injection system, valves, camshafts etc
I have a 2019 GT and about 300 miles in the tick was so obvious from about 20 yards away, and that was with proper break in. We got engine replaced at about 4,000 miles and there was scoring on 3 of the cylinders and oil leaking, tech said the car was close to blowing and up to this point I only went 50% throttle... had a new short block out in and it was fine up until 1,000miles and now I just hit 10,000 miles and I can distinctly hear the tick. Again this is with proper break in and everything. Probably going to get it bore scoped again from the tech at Ford like we did the first time and get the engine replaced again. Although ford claims “the tick is normal” premature damage isn’t normal and that’s what we’re gonna use to get a third short block. I feel for you man, it’s an annoying process
Ya man unfortunately all the updates are not fixing anything. The send it crowds are hilarious. If the tick gets worse or if you have a good dealership they will bore scope it and they will replace the short block still. If you lucky like a bunch of guys you can make it threw your warranty period. But your absolutely right man my car ticked at 60 plus miles and blew at 4600 miles. I appreciate your honesty because many guys will hate you for having opinion about your own car. Your the guy dealing with the problems nobody else. Many will say drive it there’s makes that same noise. Those guys never bore scoped and saw the damage to there cylinder walls either lmao. I suggest leave it stock beat the shit outta it. It will blow up like mine did they will fix it. Do it again and get your buyback or just call and tell them your situation. I feel for you man I was thinking I would buy another gen3 but as of now I won’t ever touch a gen 3 but I would like to get a gen2
Underfedcoyote 5.0 Thanks for your positivity bro. Lots of keyboard warriors out here, and exactly, they wont know what it’s like as its not their car. And yep, i would not reccomend touching a gen 3 😂😂😂
Matt Jones gen 1 and 2 make noise but usually higher Miles and they will to fail. Many gen 2s have been bought back and gen 1s my 14 ticks but it’s not a piston slap tick. The piston slap tick is very obvious because it happens under revs and gets worse and worse the more you add miles. Gotta understand what piston slap is and there are good videos that explain it. Even with piston slap doesn’t mean the car will fail over night. You can go many miles or years with piston slap doesn’t mean it’s good. Eventually it’s gonna fail and it’s not normal.
it doesn't seem to be in sync with the motors Rpms. I would look for an external vibration, use youtube search to find out how to listen to an engine more carefully should find good techniques...
I feel for you. I think there’s definitely something seriously wrong with those engines and would not accept somebody telling me this is normal! It’s a LEMON! I hope the best for you!
Same issue over here bough my 2020 ford mustag gt 5.0 right after the 2nd oil change that ticking came out . When they brought the car back to me i notice that tick . So i told them hey i think u guys left a lessen bolt or something cus that ticking was not thete . So they took it back inside the shop and the lady was like ohh that could oil that was drop on top of the exhaust so they didnt even know about at this point . So afterwards she came back with a paper saying that all 5.0 from 2016-2020 have the same issue . That is completely normal. So as a mechanic my self im like theres no way in hell that is normal . So my mistake for buying a ford .... never thought they would be so shitty ...
I have a 2018 with FBO on e85 and has 15k Miles. Maybe Im just lucky but my car is fine and I beat on it every time I drive it on the weekend. Only thing I check here and there is the catch can for metal shavings
So they have a bunch of bad block castings if you really want them fixed once and for all you pull the motor have the block machined and have actual STEEL cylinder liners installed but that would be out of your pocket expense
damn idk if i want one now. i learned how to drive manual because i wanted a gt. are the ecoboosts more reliable? im not a car guy, i just like the looks of coupes vs sedans.
Pear the ecoboost sure as hell doesnt have the tick, if you’re not a car guy, get the ecoboost, it’ll get you the nice looks of a mustang and its still actually kinda quick
I will tell you my 18 ticked worse without a tune, once I tuned the car it was way quieter then it used to be and I run 5w30 instead of the 5w20 ford also told me it was normal because the 19 models made the same annoying sound. You might try JLT intake a after market tune might help the timing phasers are a problem with these engines as well.
Boostedmt It is not normal. Ford bought back my 18 due to the ticking, don’t let them lie to you. Also modding and voiding your warranty gets them off the hook and they’ll just blame engine noise on your koda
Twister5.0 also you are correct it’s not normal but till ford gets sued they will continue selling as is and getting away with it my car cost me 40,000 it’s the pp1 I test drove an auto and a mt82 both made loud engine noises that the tech didn’t hear till I pointed it out to him on our drive I was very pissed off at Ford my car has 6800 miles now they won’t touch it
My Mustang Gt 2015-2017 has the tick noise, in the delearship they told me, mi engine is fine, but I m pretty sure that this sound is bad, maybe a piston slap or something like that. I”ll try with ceratec.
I have a 2020 mustang gt as well Bro and mine came in at 300 miles and don’t know what to do as well people do say it’s normal frame 2018-2020 mustangs
My 2012 5.0 ticks and pretty much has since new. it also has 162,000+ miles on it now and doesn’t use oil, there’s no metal in the oil, so I don’t care.
If you are in California that would explain why they bought back your car. Because there is a law in California (California buyback) where if you complain about an issue 3 times they have to buy your car back. I am not saying this is not an issue in your case I am just saying that is probably why they are buying your car back and not others. Just a thought.
Im having the same knocking engine problem with my 2020 mustang GT w only 4500k, plus a transmission issue, I'm very disappointed in Ford this engine has been out for 10 years now and yet having this problems, now I'm going through the headache of trying to get ford to buy the car back,
Rod bearings are the issue. It's an easy fix but, Ford refuse to do anything about it. This is really putting me off buying a new mustang now. It's a shame, because the coyote is a great engine.
I am thinking of buying a new 2022 Mustang GT. Are you telling me after all these years with the Coyote 5.0 Ford STILL has NOT fixed this engine "ticking" problem?! That's absolutely disgusting! That's a sure fire way to lose customers. Ford, are you listening?!
Phillip Gogel They gave back the down payment. The payments however were not given back (which is justified considering i put 7000 miles on the car and used it)
Is the tick actually an issue? Does it cause problems? The car still runs and drives just fine. Just drive it until the warranty is up then trade it in
ajgt350 And take a massive depreciation hit? This was a car I wanted to keep, not sell or trade in. The tick is an issue, but it doesnt affect the car in the short term, more so longer term
Audience, It's nOt normal like the spelling in the word "nOt". I'm glad I have been S@@ing all these youtube posted videos, and you aren't the ONLY one. The Ford techs are saying it's normal from other vehicles of the same make, year, and model... No wonder Ford offered me a $7,000 discount. I nearly signed the papers, but felt something was truly strange about the hugh discount. It wasn't a buy back, but a showroom floor model. Now I S@@ why... I'll wait for the 2022 models to verify any changes or maybe a 2021. It depends on the look. If it looks like a plastic space ship, then mustangs are NO longer on my list. I'll just hang on to my 2004 cobra and 1993 Fox.
Okay, so I 100% agree that there should be more coming from ford in relation to this issue. However, (and I'm not one the sEnD iT guys), I have heard of and know a good bit of people who have had the tick for 25-50k miles and have had no problems. I haven't heard much of anything about the coyotes blowing up or failing due to the tick. I get that its frustrating and worrying, but I would just ignore it. Try to get an extended warranty and do as much research as possible to see the actual failure rates of this engine. The 3.7 Cyclones had a similar Tik but never died because of it. some of them are into 150k+ Miles with it and still going strong.
my 13 ticked when i bought it with 22k on dash. took it to ford they said it was normal. end up ticking to 173k miles on it still ran strong. lol now my 18 ticks enjoy lol. i dont know if thatll give yall a piece of mind.
Grampa George my 2019 just hit 2000 miles and I have no ticks whatsoever. I hope it stays that way, lol kind of scared to get a oil change though, if it starts ticking, I'm gonna want a new car
@@11B_GRUNT Mine didn't start until the first oil change, about 2500 miles,it's been ticking all the way up to the 21000 mark.So far it still runs well, but it's tough to listen to!
It’s just Ford engines in general My f150 from 06 does this. My buddies truck from a year before that has it as well. It’s not as prominent as the mustangs .. but it’s not something they’re ever going to fix
I love buying a brand new $50,000 car and every time I start it people say what's wrong with your car man and then you have to go on with this elaborate explanation about how Ford says it's normal. I've said it once and I'll say it again good luck selling one of these Mustang making noise like that. Ford is just telling people to eat it that was the last straw for me.
I traded my 18 for a focus st. I was just thinking about buying a 2020. But now I'm going to wait for a new engine design. Or meaby I should buy a 2009 gt the 4.6 didn't have bullshit tick
These cars are a complete roll of the dice, some guys are lucky and other guys arent.IMO, None of these gen 3 coyotes will be known for their reliability and long life in years to come
@@liama2045 I never took it to the dealer I guess the Ticking sounds is normal on a 5.0 he made a video of it. My tick actually went away on its own ! No more tick! I’ve taken it to the dealer for oil changes & they inspected they car & it’s fine !

All honestly I think what it is... these new cars come in and the dealers(workers) can’t drive or they push on them hard to see what’s it’s like... then I come on in like oh it’s only 185miles on it, average Joe comes in and be like yeah let’s get this one then later on once it’s broken into and since it wasn’t done properly right now we have problems and Ford like what the heck!?! But still a zL1 can take a beating no matter what!! Big Trusss
MATTHEW COLTON lucky for me my car was a special order and nobody test drove it, and i full throttled my car at 1k miles and broke it in properly but its ticking still lol
CA lemon law. Email the service manager your RU-vid link and politely tell him you have XXX # viewers. It’s a beautiful car but obv the tick is f’ing irritating and is not helping your OCD! 😆
My 2020 pp1 just started doing it the other day right after the first oil change at 8000 kilometres. They’re trying to tell me that’s normal. It’s not !!! My tick is worse than yours in the video. I’m not impressed 🤬🤬
It genuinely might be, i've been driving this car now for 10,400 miles and I have run into zero issues so far powertrain wise. I even borescoped it to check for cylinder damage and it was surprisingly in perfect shape. I guess the tick very well may be normal.....idk
roadjunkie well in their defense the gen 2 coyote was outdated with its power, the 392 and ss camaro were spanking it, the gen 3 coyote’s power competes with those 2 cars
I have the 2015 pp gt , it’s got really shitty panel fit quality , and interior plastic noisy , tranny makes a thud when putting into 1st ,but solid compared to the later years
I had a 2018 Mustang gt that I loved dearly. It was pp1, premium stereo, magna ride dampers, active exhaust and the digital dash. The was my dream car I had saved for many years. I couldn't wait to drive it everyday. Then with less than 3k miles the ticking started. When I first heard it the feeling I had was like my throat went to my stomach. I could not believe this was happening to my mustang. I just sat in the car dumbfounded. To make a long long story short, I traded in on a GMC Pickup. I told the dealership and Ford Corp. they screwed up with this engine and people deserved to be treated differently and shown respect. FORD does stand for fixed or repaired daily. I loved that car and was the highlight of my life for about 4 months but Ford didn't really seem to care one way or the other.
I am thinking about buying a new 2020 Mustang GT (or maybe 2021 model year) but I am terrified about this dreaded engine tick. The TSB put out by Ford is complete nonsense. That's like saying I am going to buy a suit but I am told by the designer that many of their suits come with stitching that comes apart and that is just a normal characteristic of the fabric. Are you kidding me? That is a load of BS!!! My response to Ford is, since they are one of the best engine builders in the world, why can't they make a 5.0 Litre engine WITHOUT the tick? There is OBVIOUSLY a design flaw in that engine or else there would be no ticking. You don't have to be a mechanical engineer to know that the sound is 100% NOT normal. Ford puts out this TSB (or let's call it an excuse) to cover themselves legally. Plain and simple. If I were running Ford I would solve this problem immediately by either: 1) Correcting the design flaw to eliminate the ticking in any new models produced; or 2) Come out with a new engine (other than the 5.0 Litre) that is PROPERLY designed that runs quietly and smoothly without any unwanted noises such as this tick. Until I get some answers from Ford that can alleviate my concerns, I will hold off on this purchase.
I agree with you Steven. I have been ready to pull the trigger for a while now and am truly worried about this issue. I would be so ticked at myself if I purchased a new mustang and it had the tick. I wanted one from Saleen or Roush and with it having a bunch of extra HP, it would be a pain to try and get the engine replaced.
Calls the guys who say send it "idiots". But you had the exact same problem with a 18 and you knew the engine tic is an issue, yet you purchase practically the exact same car 2 years later.....😂😂
So still ticking? Damn Gord does not know how to build good reliable cars....damn it I bought this damn car before seeing all the problems related to this! Should have gone with the Chevy Camaro!
I was excited about getting the 2019 BULLITT plus they had it in black! But on the test drive the other day the clutch was making a weird clicking noise and I was like that is not normal am I tripping!? So I said let me wait it out and did research Man thanks for this Clarification... I’m just go with the zL1
does the engine tick mean that it will break? man... Ford mustangs are garbage, bad engines, bad transmissions. it only has good looks and a nice sound but the rest seems to be shit.
