I agree! I haven't been on RU-vid near as much as in the past, and always preferred Leigh & Raymonds video's on DSLR gear (and usage) so when the mirrorless gear was shown, I felt no need to watch, as even today I'm not seeing nicer images via mirrorless, thus have no interest in it. As Leigh mentioned here, perhaps capturing birds, and the odd fast moving wildlife, it 'may' be possible to get more hits, but for most of us...are those additional hits worth spending thousands of dollars? For me, it's not, and I prefer to get more and more familiar with my D750 as well as afford glass for it, than on any mirrorless kits.

I will occasionally pull out my old Minolta XD-11 35mm film camera that I used in college. It not only "forces" me to get back to basics, but also still takes awesome photos that stand up to my Nikon D500 and D850. Timing, light, and location. That about covers it. Thanks Leigh. (Glad to see you up and about!)

You have certainly reenforced what I believe. I am retired and love photography. Unfortunately my passion is outweighed by my budget! I have a D500 body and a Sigma 17-70 2.8f and I love both and find this kit more than enough for my skill level.

I agree, having a setup that works...why change it up! I use the D750 and generally use my 16-35mm or 28-300mm, giving me full range in 99% of my photography. I do have the Tampon macro, and Tamron 150-600mm for 'other' usage (bugs, flowers or birds) but overall I enjoy Landscape over all other photography, so feel I'm fully covered.

I transitioned from a Canon 6D mk ii to a Canon R and so far I love it. That being said I still believe DSLR’s are very capable, plus all the tech in the world doesn’t replace skill. One of my favorite shots I’ve ever taken was on a 35mm Olympus point and shoot back in 1993.

I made the switch from Nikon DSLR to Sony Mirrorless and I've been super happy with the switch. i shoot a lot of concerts and it was always a guess when i was using a dslr if i did or did not get the shot. 50/50 was the norm, either out of focus or the lighting changed etc etc, now with my mirrorless i see what the pic will look like before i take it and with eye-following i know where the focus is for certain. Anyway glad you are back making videos.

Repetition-Practice-Experience. These are all keys to elevating your photography to another level. It is always about expressing your “vision” not your equipment. Equipment can be very helpful in helping you to achieve that vision but if you master the equipment that you already own, you are on the way to becoming a very good photographer.😊

Hi Leigh, as one who has watched every single one of your training videos I can honestly say that they are both informative and engaging ... well worthy of the time to absorb the wealth of experience you've accrued over several years. As for " it's not all about the gear", I couldn't agree more, I find that 90% of photography takes place behind the viewfinder, though who doesn't love the latest and greatest. Being one with rather limited funds, I try to focus ( sorry for the pun ) on wringing every last bit of performance out of what I have, but honestly I nearly always run out of talent before the camera's features let me down! Keep up the good work, and good to see you looking well.

Hi Leigh great to see the recovery is going well.😊 As an older photographer I totally agree that a good photographer can take a good photo with almost any gear. However as an older photographer the main difference for me is weight, weight and weight. With modern day sensors and IBIS the argument of f2.8 and f4 lenses for most situations is becoming redundant, except where weight/price is concerned. Raymond did a great job but it is good to see you back.

Agree totally , being retired, with dodgy knees and questionable shoulders weight was one of the motivating factors which last year led me to make the decision to go mirrorless. It was an expensive decision for sure but at my age is there a better time to own the gear that I could not have even imagined when I took up photography in 1967 ?

I am older, and have zero issues carrying my DSLR, which I just did in the desert outside of Apache Junction a couple of weeks ago. The flowers where abundant, and late afternoon sun gave great results! So, four or five hours didn't bother me, it was those pesky cactus droppings that would stick me from time to time! Loved being out there, and experimenting moreless without my tripod helped somewhat.

I'm not a professional, I'm lucky enough to occasionally be able to travel around the world for my work (Federal Wildlife Officer). I'll probably never reach or exceed the capabilities of my D810 or D500. I've been buying good glass for years, and I don't ever see the need to go mirrorless. My stuff works, I'm familiar with it, and it's paid for. There is zero motivation to change to mirrorless. In fact, the good deals on used gear, because many people ARE changing systems, had made upgrading my DSLR systems even affordable. In fact, I bought my D810 with low shutter count from a wedding photographer who was trading his gear in for mirrorless. Appreciate your videos and opinions. Thanks

Really great perspective on using equipment. We shouldn't underestimate the importance of our minds, of tools to know when sun and moon rise and set are, of thinking ahead and getting to the right place but also of using that brake and pulling over to the side of the road when you realize something would make a great photo.

Very good appraisal. In the majority of cases, new gear is probably not going to improve your photography, especially if you are a landscape photographer. A new mirrorless camera with better tracking may improve your hit rate for wildlife photography and portraiture but as you suggest invest your money in improving your skills and transport costs!

Having shot nearly everything mirrorless in the last couple of years, I'm honestly looking to go back to a DSLR, like a D800e. Much prefer the optical viewfinder and overall simplicity. To use a "Brownstoneism", I find the futz-factor to be distractingly high with mirrorless.

I started out with a Kodak box-film camera. I've migrated from a Minolta film camera to Nikon DSLRs, and now with Nikon Mirrorless cameras. As camera manufacturers evolve, the equipment and lenses get better. While I still love my Nikon D750, it's hard to compare it to the functionality of my Nikon Z7 II, and mirrorless lenses. Comparing DSLR to Mirrorless is similar to comparing vinyl records, to cassettes, then DVDs, then BlueRay. Technology evolves and usually for the better. Visiting the past can be fun, but I prefer the future of photography. I do love KEH and have purchased several new lenses and one used lens. This is a great company.

I've used Micro Four Thirds mirrorless systems for many, many years, basically I graduated to Micro Four Thirds mirrorless from my Four Thirds DSLR setup. Thanks to Canon's move to RF, their EOS EF system is dirt cheap now. I bought a 5DII and a handful of L lenses for pennies on the dollar - I've always shot "full frame" on 135 film, even after adding digital to my workflow. I missed the 24mm*36mm look in my work as a digital option. Prices and available lenses for "full frame" have come down to a point where it's a no brainer. I pulled the trigger today on a 5DsR which is going to be my architecture and landscape camera going forward. It's exactly as you said: the right conditions and right light are the key factors. Even film cameras from 40 years ago deliver outstanding results in the right conditions.

Then the arguments start about brand loyalty, which is just foolishness in and of itself. It is good to see you up and moving around again Leigh. I wish you, Raymond and your family well and continued success on your recovery. Leigh I have to ask you and Raymond this question, when you are shooting bears like the ones in the photo, how far away are you and do you go into a nature environment like that armed. I agree with you that skill , as a photographer, is most important. DSLR's can be used to create wonderful images. The only problem is that camera manufactures are quickly abandoning the DSLR format. They are all moving to Mirrorless systems. So just like when we went from Film to the DSLR so we are going from DSLR to Mirrorless. Sony as well as Canon and Nikon are all now firmly moving to mirrorless as their future. I have a bunch of old cameras. they all have stories. but I see the writing on the wall. Yes DSLR's are wonderful tools that had their day, but mirrorless is now on the rise.

I possess both a Z6 and a D500. The Z6 has become my “go to camera” due to its low light capabilities and the trio of Z lenses in my kit. I have never owned lenses that can match the quality of the Z mount S series. However, I still fall back on my D500 for moving subjects, action, birds in flight, etc. if the rumored Z8 is what the pundits seem to think it will be, I will likely trade the D500 for the new model. The drawback to having 2 systems is that those great Z mount lenses are not backwards compatible to the DSLRs.

My "home and weekend" cameras are my D7200 (bought used at a "brick and mortar" camera store) and the D800 (I recently purchased from KEH). I prefer them to my Z5, that I use for street photography most of the time. I suppose it's due to my discipline, or process, of photography. As a film shooter since 1976, I have a routine that converts to the DSLR better than mirrorless. I suppose that I feel like I'm "cheating" when the exposure is in the EVF. That said... you can't beat a mirrorless camera on the street. If you're thinking it through... any camera can work for you. If you're reacting in "real time", it's mirrorless all the way.

Awesome Video. The discussion is something that I personally struggle with when looking at gear, "what will it actually get me that I can't already get." Its an awesome discussion. I would like to see some technical creatives talk to nontechnical creatives about how they currently work, I think that the nature of photography is growing in that now someone does not need the same amount of technical background to achieve their visions and opens the way for more creative/less technical people to flourish. It will be interesting to see how much better the gear gets before people laugh at the fact that the cameras like the D700 were perfectly capable (I argue it still is 90% of the time) with only 12 megapixels.

Good #video you did here. Sometimes, it depends on how the photographer uses the equipment. If the photographer only works on weddings, landscapes or still lies, then he/she doesn't need the super duper mirrorless camera meant for sports, auto racing or photojournalism. But by the same token, back in the 1980's sports photographers and photojournalists were able to capture amazing images using only the Nikon F3 or Canon AE-1 cameras.

Wildlife will always be able to put demands on the equipment that we can't satisfy. My passion is owls - especially barn owls and, while it is possible to take great stills and videos of them in the dusk, there is so much of their activity that I can only get a gimps of using IR floodlights and CCTV cameras. I would love to be able to take even 1080p video in full moonlight but, even with a 600mm f4 and ISOs on the limit of current technology we are a few stops short of being able to do that. Perhaps with a cooled sensor it might be possible but not with anything one could consider as "normal" equipment.

@@LeighAndRaymond Many thanks for the reply! We are so lucky that we were able to buy a smallholding on the edge of the Peak District of Derbyshire almost 25 years ago and even more lucky to be able to keep most of it for the wildlife (or to go to rack and ruin as the local sheep farmers call it ☺️). We see one of the barn owls quartering the fields on many evenings. These days I tend to just stand and watch or just listen to the calls. To know they are there is reward enough.

I am a avid photo hobbyist for 45 years. Mirrorless was a huge game changer for me. I like sharp photos as much as anyone, but for that my cell phone does a perfect job if I take the photo, hold up the phone to reality and edit it right there on the spot to make it look exactly as real life. Usually, it’s just color balance and contrast that are off. If someone makes little wildlife telephoto lenses for phones, that would be great. However, for serious photography, I love imperfect old vintage lenses that adapt to my mirrorless with full camera movements. I am waiting for someone to build in a random digital wet plate collodium developer. That would be so easy to program for someone who knows what they are doing. Fuji is going in that popular direction with their film stock simulators. Wonderful time in photography history where all of us can find what suits us. I don’t see any benefit to DSLRs now other than you could get one cheap.

I'll not be changing to mirrorless from my D850, D7100, and D700 anytime soon. Yes Nikon 6 and 7s' have in body stabilisation but with big hands there too small for me and yes most of my film sir's are smaller but there are my collection for occasional use not my EDC's. If Nikon did what Sony did with IBS in their DSLRs, that would have been great, but sadly not.

I myself feel that I had lost some skill when digital AF Bridge/SLR Cameras started "taking over" the world.... However, I seriously feel using vintage 35mm cameras & lenses is a way to grow your abilities and understand light and options on DSLR's and in one context mirror less cameras have been around for a century and a half at least. The technology has really only changed in that sense, ie, photo plates replaced artists conceptions caught in rooms centuries before, and then photographic film has been usurped by digital photo/film files, digital physical media and I thank you for the KEH plug, lol. But as you rightly said, Leigh; one should aquire a familiar place with the equipment you have first....before expending vast sums of money on the latest and greatest, that will be "old" in a year or two.

Coming from SLRs to DSLRs then in 2012 went to Fuji X mirrorless, I have found my way back to DSLRs. With the new hype and availability of all these mirrorless product, the prices went up. I decided instead of upgrading my fuji gear I went back to DSLRs for the simple fact of supply and demand and a suddenly robust used market from everyone going to mirrorless. I don't do a whole lot of hired work anymore so I don't need to follow the pack and hype. Instead I got a refurbished D850 and threw in a Z5 with an FTZ as a backup, albeit a mirrorless but still cheaper than a D780 I have my eye on to cover the 24Mp range. I had to come back to what "photography Tools" mean and shake off that "gotta go mirrorless" GAS. With the money I am getting from selling off all my Fuji gear I can re-vamp some F glass from years back to go along with ones I've acquired over the last 40 years and have an even More robust collection to give me Anything I need and want going forward. I am keeping my X-Pro2 and a couple XF primes however for those personal creative times. I agree, it doesn't matter what you have, and I haven't notice anything different in my image style to waist money on new and more expensive yet ultimately redundant gear in the long run. The smart thing to do is buy used That way you get more bang for your buck.

Mirrorless is the direction, not unlike digital was when it replaced film. There are pros and cons both ways - but I will say that when someone near me is using a DSLR it sounds like an old typewriter. I've had the audio of a few good videos ruined because of it. I'll be glad to see the flapping mirrors gone.

I have both. I'm lucky that overtime I've been able to save my butt off to get different cameras and I have one Nikon D850 and I also have a Fuji X - T5. Which I love. Both cameras serve a purpose. there are things that the Fuji can do really really well. And there are things that the D8 50 does way better than the Fuji does. And I do think that for a what I consider semi professional photographer like myself I definitely need to different systems to work with.. I agree with you that working on your composition craft and finding new places to shoot and learning about light are more critical dinner gear you own. Are the mirrors for me is lighter so sometimes if I feel like going for a longer hike I can take that camera but if I'm shooting a Long Exposure and I want incredible dynamic range then the D850 probably is a slightly better camera. If I'm shooting a Portrait, I prefer the D8 50 but if I'm shooting at an event where I need to get shots now each time I will take the Fuji XT5. It really depends on what I'm shooting and the purpose. I also do sports photography for my local speedway club and I take the D8 50 as I find it. It does not miss focus ever on the speedway cars going at high-speed.... I'm not typically one of those type of people that has 25 different lenses either. I think I have about 8 lenses in total across the two systems and I get everything done with those lenses. I teach photography in my local community, and the first thing I teach people and I get them to do. It is watch the videos and if they are a manual person read the manual to the camera, so the camera becomes as you said part of your hand it is an extension of your fingers and you know what every dial button does. Now this may take probably a good couple of months sometimes longer to learn everything that your camera does I'm still learning things five years on from owning the NikonD850. Oddly, I was not drawn to the Z series cameras and the Fuji provided something different a totally different experience so I'm really enjoying having that camera as well. Thank you for your video and it highlighted many things that we need to work on as photographers and things that I can pass on to students that I work with..

If you on conference or in opera or in theater you NEED noiseless mirrorless camera, if you taking quite sports action moments you NEED 40 fps, you your model moves fast you NEED eye autofocus, if you on concert and you can not see what you filming you NEED eye autofocus as well. If you have 3 camera on you neck you appreciate weight of mirrorless cameras 📷 If you landscape photographer and you have all time of the world and noise will not disturb the wild animals when you taking you beautiful pictures with a tripod, THEN you can stay on DSLR camera. If not, mirrorless camera WILL IMMEDIATELY IMPROVE your skills!! ❤

The biggest difference for me is that modern mirrorless cameras are more compact and easier to use due to the modern autofocus and the increased dynamic range. The result of sharp and correctly exposed images is greater due to the DSLM. But that does not mean that they are better, the finished image does not show the used camera....

The age of my equipment creates unreachable limits, such as 720p vs 4k video. Learning how to better use my video on my aging dslr will never create anything near 4k video. There's also ISO limits that affect low-light capabilities. I love my older dslr but the limits are evident when compared to a mirrorless.

@LeighAndRaymond

The noise in an image doesn’t have anything to do if the camera has a mirror or not. Rather, the sensor and the camera’s software will direct how much noise you see at higher ISO Sensitivities. Plus, every camera is different. In general, I wouldn’t worry about what other people are saying - if you like your camera, shoot with it! :)

Does a mirrorless camera upgrade make you a better photographer automatically? No. But the mirrorless camera allows for a faster learning curve much like a DSLR offered a faster learning curve vs an SLR. An experienced SLR film user can create awesome photographs. I learned on SLRs. but I worked at a photo lab at the time and was able to more affordably shoot a lot of film to learn. DSLRs made the learning curve vs SLRs much faster. Immediate results from settings changes made a world of difference. Now look at a mirrorless letting you see exposure differences before you even press the shutter. The learning advancement difference is relatable. Also, some of us just like new tech. It can be as invigorating as mastering what you have. I'm as much of a tech enthusiast as I am a results enthusiast.
