Riding in the mountains is probably my favorite thing to do on a motorcycle. Typically when I go ride up there I have a bit of a larger bike with me. Well, with Yamaha loaning me this R3 I'm curious, can you have fun in the mountains, doing technical riding, with a lower CC sportbike like their R3. Get ready cause the R3 really surprised me with what I found out!
See part 2 here: • You NEED a Yamaha R3 t...

Yammie Noob That’s right. Yammie Noob You tell him. You were ripping that KTM 390. Chase is lacking in his confidence on these small CC bikes. He needs to ride these bikes more often. We cannot limit our selves to just the mid level or liter bikes. The small CC bikes are canyon carvers and at best. The best training bikes on the market. It’s better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. Because you can make use of all your gears and feel the power of the Force. Oops, that was a Darth Vader moment LoL

I'm hoping the big jump in popularity of these small bikes and the fact the there's a zx25r out will get more manufacturers to start building smaller cc fun or outright crazy bikes like they did in the 80s and early 90s

Of course down shifting is required if you are going uphill and have less momentum regardless of the engine size. Big bikes may have taller gear ratios Also, in most of the developing countries including mine i.e India mountains are owned by 100cc bikes, 300cc yamaha is a rare thing even in metropolitan cities, forget small town. Yamaha showroom may not even have this in display and employees might not even be aware that it exists. Life is different everywhere yet we climb mountains ✌️

I rode a ninja 300 for 3 years before hopping on to an FZ10 and whenever i go back to the ninja i am always reminded of how much fun i can have on it, sometimes more so than the FZ because i don't need to worry about excessive throttle. I basically run the ninja all the way up the dial and just leave it there screaming the whole time.

Need to be one gear lower the entire time. I live in Western NC and the R3 is my first bike. I ride it on the Blue ridge parkway a good bit and other local, fun roads. That being said the R3 is dang fast when you keep the RPMs around 8500-11,000. I have friends in my group that can't keep up with me on their big bikes. As soon as we took a break on the parkway my buddy said "you are damn fast on that little thing" lol. Yet I am looking for something else that is a little better on the highway and also that sounds better. I am thinking about an MT07 or possibly an MT09. I would love a 600 super sport but my group's average trip is around 4 hours and I'd probably be hurting after that ride. The R3 already makes my lower back hurt a little as it is. Which is why I want something that has more adjustment on the suspension as well or rides better in general

That R3, even described by its designer is half an R6 shoehorned into a smaller but heavier frame. Like an R6, it enjoys getting the piss revved out of it. You spent way too much time in higher gears when you should have been in mostly second wringing the piss out of it and you'd have had a much easier time. You kinda want to keep it on the boil above 8k rpm for best response. What you said about engine power is actually a bit opposite. On very heavy, technical courses, the lighter bikes with shorter wheelbases that can carry a lot more speed at corner entrance will generally do much better than the larger, heavier bikes that are more point and squirt. You got too used to going into a corner relatively slowly and getting passed the apex and relatively up as fast as possible to punch the throttle as soon as possible like the larger and much more powerful bikes tend to want to do. The smaller bikes are about getting as much corner entry speed as you are able and to be as smooth as possible to maintain as much of that speed as possible. You generally wanna do slightly different lines and geometry on these small bikes than a liter bike or even a supersport. This is why some orgs don't let these smaller bikes on the track at the same time as the A riders. The naturally different lines often end up with crossing or intersecting paths and the larger bikes often end up crossing and slamming into the smaller bikes at corner exit as they hammer the throttle.

There's a guy on youtube called decal boy and he does the R3 right on these roads. But the speed limit and LEO is a factor.

This is a ridiculous question. In many parts of Europe, anything above 200 cc is considered overpowered.

Well, I have so much fun on the mountains with my yamaha r125 so I don't see why an R3 wouldn't be able to deliver some good fun

If you get used to r3 for a few weeks. Then get back to r1 you will find yourself driving it better and taking the most of the r1. Because r3 gave you skills. You learn to use the gears at the most efficient way possible.

you should do the same test with the r125. remember European 125 are usually more powerful compared to American but they are still lazy but can be fun.

More torque* they are just different gearing ratios. Very few people ride 125s stateside. Usually start at 250-600cc

Dude I’m 15 and own a scooter and I can garanti u my piaggio liberty 50s can manage to go through high heels pretty easily. Americans really always think that with less power, u can’t have some fun.

my r3 2019 I love the stock tires its so sticky that I put my trust when I'm knee dragging.. I think you just got used to high powered bikes on my r3 I seldom go in 4 to 6 gear when climbing the mountain..but I'm still getting the power and reach 100kph..or its just that i'm lighter since I'm an average Asian guy? hahahahaha

I ride a 1000cc and I bought the R3 for my son and I think it’s a great beginners bike easily one of the best sports bike in its class so if you can’t see that then maybe you should stay riding your so super powerful R6 lol If you need more power through the corner then try knocking it down a gear entering the corner and give it more throttle. Btw you lean that bike less then my son and he’s still learning , maybe ya need that full leather track suit to build your confidence lol 😂, there’s a saying we ride with , “it’s all or nothing” ! And you definitely just showed us nothing
