1. I would have asked if she met her husband there? If so, that should temper her being upset about goingbthere. 2. I would have told her she needs to be honest with her mom about how she feels. Letting those feelings fester will grow worse even if she does pay iff the debts. Unresolved anger is very harmful. Assuming they are both Christians, follow Matthew 18.

After high school my grandparents offered to pay my college tuition and a monthly allowance if I attended a specific private Christian college... thing is I had applied to and was accepted to several others that had course offerings I was interested in. I discussed it with them and asked if they would still help if I chose a different school, but they didn't offer a dime. They said they talked to their accountant and they would get no tax benefit that way. I love my grandparents deeply and have a good relationship with them, but this soured it pretty badly for me. They tried to convince me it was a gift but it really wasn't.

At least you recognised it. It's can form of manipulation, when there's strings attached, but not always. They're within their rights/boundaries to offer something with conditions. Funny thing mom is now not wanting to pay for it a couple of payments in. I mean thats obvious to us but for people out there in the future dont accept someone else paying your debt because it will never end well. My mom helped me with a few thousand and said i didn't need to pay it back and she constantly brings it up even though i do help her with money.
