THANK YOU, I HAD NO IDEA HOW THESE WORKED! I HAVE JUST BEEN SCHOOLED. I am 81 years old I love learning about the different transmissions. I have a hobby of collecting older cars and square body pickups. seem all the automatic trans need fixing and if the transmission is on the fritz price is really low . with a little help and knowledge things work out and I can save the horses, under the hood that is. thanks again for the help.
I've been looking for that answer all morning. I've got a 700r4 with no wires coming off of it whatsoever...I thought I was missing some vital computer control...I've been pouring over wiring diagrams, digging in blogs, etc. for hours. Two minutes and every question I had has been answered. Thank You!
I got a 73 Nova with a 350 & a 700r4 transmission non lockup every now and then I drive it to my grandma's house which is like a 70-mile trip transmission holds up great it's never burned out on me even in 100° degree weather ..
700R4's are great for long trips because of the built in overdrive. They are easier on gas. Thanks for your comment! Mad Dog Transmissions 770-781-0949

So either way if u have a lockup torque converter or a non lock up torque converter with a 700r4 u dont have to hook up the lockup. Only thing you have to use is the tv cable right?
@@danhilsabeck6793 Correct it will not affect the performance of the transmission, your converter just will not lockup. Mad Dog Transmissions 770-781-0949
hey thanks it seems to be fine now i drove it today and it didnt act up....thanks for the feed back im gonna take it weelin this week end and see if it acts the same when you hammer on it thanks ill keep you posted!! and again thank you sometimes its just something liltle that can mess things up!!
Mr Koulouvaris I know this video is been a few years I hope you can read my dumb question I apologize in advance I have an 84 corvette Doug Nash 4+3 manual I would like to switch to 700r4 but I'm not familiar with wiring or the computer but you mention that on this video I can run the 700r4 with no computer? thanks in advance.
Just found this transmission 5ME043A can you tell me if this is a 700r4, also I would like information on a TV kit to hook it up to my two barrel carb on a 283 Chevy block
Hey good video, been wondering about this and the TCC since I've been thinking about ditching the EFI and computer in my 89 camaro, and going to carb...
Hi do they make a shift kit for this tranny that will shift it stronger then the Cadillac smooth shift? Not like the old kickers that throw you to the back just a bit stronger when pulling a trailer is needed.
Exactly what I wanted to know, thanks. I've also read that I can just run a relay to a toggle switch to lock up the converter manualy, can u do a video on this? I'm getting ready to swap in a 700 in a 71chevy, mostly around town but some highway driving.
You can. You will need a crank spacer though. You will also have to call Bowtie Overdrive to get your TV Cable and the brackets for your fuel injection. Mad Dog Transmissions 770-781-0949
Thank you Lou ! Been wondering about the lock out and ,Man i feel better, I have a question about the output shaft .Are the splines metric ? i have a 92 Camaro with the 700r4 but planning on using a 87 Camaro driveshaft will i need to buy a new slip yoke ? Thanks for the Video !!!
nastydog131 Hello Nastydog, 27 spline, just like the TH350, 2 speed powerglide, 200R4, and 700R4. So yes, you can use your same slip yoke. hi Lou what is the temp switch for in the 1990 700r4 k case md8 type 18 2wd. I live in a Maine. i need a hand in wiring it up. Need a diagram and advice.
Is this the same for the 4l60 that came in a 93 Chevy Camaro z28. It has a tv cable but also has a round plug as if it’s a 4l60e. I know it’s not. I’m curious because I carved swapped a 97 5.7 vortec and my square plug 700r4 lost 3rd and fourth so my 4l60 should work in in it without using plug. It’s in a 1990 gmc sierra short bed.
Will a 700r4 work on my stock 1985 chevy el Camino? It has a small block 305 about to upgrade the cc qjet to a 1403 Edelbrock. Still has original 200c transmission.
So I have nothing to worry about putting a 700r4 in the 45 pickup I'm building, it's going to shift fine, as long as tv cable is properly adjusted, and I'm not doing alot if long distance driving, ?
700R4's are actually reliable and great for long distance driving because of the built in 4th gear/overdrive. Just make sure that your Brackets and TV Cable is set correctly and you will be fine. If you have any other questions or need help setting your TV Cable and brackets just give us a call. Mad Dog Transmissions 770-781-0949
Do yall have a video on how to properly adjust the TV cable think mine is wrong sense when I'm going down the highway in overdrive I can push the pedal all the way to 1.5" off floor nothing happens but when I push it to the floor then it takes off but when I have gear shifter not in the overdrive position no problems
Yes I'm not an expert at all but I am deep in the 700. I built one in my 83 dually from a diesel 700 and applied the Transgo full kit and had to pull the pan twice to change shift points. It still works great. Now I bought a 93 Suburban and converted to total carb with a 700 from a junkyard. It works ok but it slips a little at full throttle into second so I bought another one to rebuild. I at the valve body now. The trans id is a 91 but the valve body has the 3-4 valve like 88 an older in it. That must mean that is has an older VB in it. I put the Transgo JR in it and a 500 boost in the pump but when I took out the boost valve for the pressure in the valve body it had a 1-2" spacer in it. So I took that out and put the spring in there to match the boost. I also found spacers in the accumulators. I took those out and put it together like the kit. Before I button this up is there something that needs to be changed that someone has done to the valve body that might explode this build? I went 700 Jr on this one. Transtar will have my valve tomorrow.
Hey Mad Dog, great info. I have a 1972 Corvette with a 400 trans. I want to convert to the 700r4. Will I need a new crossmember? I will be calling you soon to get the install kit. Thanks, Tony.
I got a question. I have a 85 IROC Z and I don't think my converter is locking up. At first I thought my trans just wouldn't shift into 4th becuase I couldn't feel a shift. But I do feel a down shift when I go from OD to 3rd. Is that just pressure raising in the trans making it feel like a down shift. Is it my converter not locking up? Or have I just lost 4th gear. Before it would shift into 4th and give me the lower RPMs but now it doesn't sometimes it shifts into 4th but as soon as I try to keep a steady MPH it down shift or slip.
I had a 4l60 on my 91 Silverado trans went bad took it to get rebuilt, mechanic swapped it with a 700r4 without letting me know,....should I be pissed?
Hey thanks for the video really informative although I do have one question my friend has a 94 Chevy truck the 4l60 went out so were putting a 700r4 in it but is there a way to make the circle plug work for the 4 prong plug for the torque converter lockup or do u have to buy the kit?

The only modifications would be you would need a TV Cable and the TV Cable Bracket and the Geometry Bracket for your Carburetor because 700's are cable driven units and not electrical units. 770-837-9481 Mad Dog Transmissions
Mad dog I changed my stall from a 1800 to 2600 both with lock up on a 700r4. my lock up is wired to a switch to hit it when needed. everything is fine..put with the new stall when I hit the lock up switch it feels like a surge ...likes it's jumping in and out of lock up...any ideas?

Great video and information on this. I just bought a rebuilt one and am putting it in my 56 chevy. Thankfully now that I know these non critical issues, I will sleep much better. Is it a 3 speed with over drive or a 4 speed. What do they regard this trans as having? Thanks.
Thanks for that. My buddy is saying to use a t350 instead of a 700r4 because of the over drive lock out issues. Having none, he said can leave you spinning your engine up to 400 rpm MORE than having it locked. You say 2 hundred rpm in your video I think. 400 makes it sound like a lot! Question though. I'm buying a used 700r4 for my 56 chevy. Every one is saying get the one wire kit. Supposedly it is 99 dollars for kit and you install it only from the outside of trans. No internal operation. I can do that, But how is this over drive set up when it is in a factory car? How did it work when plugged in on a factory installation? What did the wires go to? And how did it operate? What makes it function. Maybe that will help me understand why we have to turn it on manually from now on and hook it up with a kit and can never have it work properly in a classic? Thanks!
That is for the lockup control. It locks up at around 47-48 miles an hour in 4th gear. When you hit the brake pedal it unlocks the converter or if you hit the accelerator it unlocks it. You still have all 4 gears even without running the lockup. The easiest and best way to use a lockup is a TCI lockup because it's just a one wire and vacuum hook up. Mad Dog Transmissions 770-781-0949
So factory cars have the lock up come on at a certain speed. Meaning something in the factory set up is telling the overdrive to come on. We don't have that in a classic as it is not designed to do so. Or else it would work without a after market switch, right? What causes the Over Drive To KICK ON with a FACTORY SET UP? I know you said it locks up around 47 to 48. What is the device telling it to do so in the factory operation? Is it wired to the speedo? Vacuum actuated? A computer controlling it? What is the actual factory set up? Or is it all done with a computer on that car? Thank you.
You are right. With the factory set up (a vehicle coming with a 700R4 already) the lockup is already installed in the car and set to turn on when needed, so you don't have to worry about an external or TCI Lockup kit. The classic cars that did not come with a 700R4 will need the TCI Lockup kit to make it lock up. In the converters for the 700R4's they have a lockup clutch that reads from the solenoids and it sends the message to the lock up system to lock it up. Mad Dog Transmissions 770-781-0949
This is probably a dumb question. I got a 700r4 for my next Demolition derby trans. Since ill be manually keeping/shifting from ONLY 1st and Reverse. Is the TV Cable necessary? THANKS!
Thank you for easy answer ( i ask person who work in transmission overhauling company more than 25+ years he tell me without hook up the lockup will burning 700 r4 this is not true ) for 200 rev drop on rpm i think lockup not important , Chevy 350 small block with Holley 670 carburetor, Edelbrock Performer intake manifold what TV cable and bracket i need for this application ( part number ) , i can drive TH 700 r4 without lockup kit if torque converter have lockup clutch , how i know if torque converter with lockup clutch or without , if i increase engine hp and torque after which percentage of power i must change stall speed torque converter. if i start engine with 295 hp and increasing to 400 hp i can use the torque converter stall speed or i must upgraded and if need to upgrade how i know which stall speed i must choose .thank you in advance and best regards,
As long as the converter is a lockup converter then you do not need any additional lockup for the 700R4. All of our converters are lockup unless the customer requests different. Other transmission shops you will just have to ask them if theirs are lockup converters. Some customers do prefer to have an additional lockup that they can turn on and off themselves, it's just a personal preference. Your stall speed on your converter only changes if you change your cam. The Cam duration determines what stall you should use. Hello boss man, the 700R4 is a non-computer controlled overdrive transmission. The 4L60E, of course, is computer-controlled.1994 to 1996 4L60E is the exact same length. Everything will bolt right up. The only thing you will need is of course computer with wiring harness. You can call us and talk to a live person. Up until 10 PM Eastern standard time , Monday through Sunday. Thank You, "Mad Dog" Lou call us Mad Dog Transmissions Phone 770-781-0949
Hello Chandler, the 1-2 shift is 8 to 10 mph always shifts quick because of the 306 1 gear ratio. This also depends on your differential gear ratio. call us any time at Maddog transmissions 770-781-0949 Thanks MaddogLou.
One more question I ended up putting a 700r4 in my truck too and I drive 15 miles one way to work so by me not having the lockup will still be fine driving like this everyday? I hooked it up to a toggle switch worked for about a week and it quit kicking up I put a new solenoid and still nothing with the engine off I flip the switch and can hear it click so what would cause it to no lockup?
Sir, I am replacing a gen 1 350 in a 1994 Chevy pickup. I am replacing it with an early model 350. What do I need to do to keep the 700r. I would like to keep the transmission for the overdrive.Thank you

Hmmm when you run 700r4 with a lockup convertor that you do not use lockup for Normal Use You will overheat the transmission Converter was not designed to run with out Lockup Everything in there is too small to be working all the time Non Lockup convertors are larger internals and the Pump is modified in 700 application so the Cooler will actually have flow wire in 4th gear switch Use Hydraulic lockup mods with early transmissions with Lock up Convertors or you will be sorry in the Long run its not Brain Surgery
Hello boss man, if it is computer-controlled you can disengage the lock up by the tune if it is noncomputer controlled. You can disconnected. Of course, all this can be done without replacing converter. If you prefer, we can call you personally, just e-mail us your phone number. Hello Daniel Morin, the 700R4 from 1982 to 1992 is non computer controlled. It is a true four-speed automatic overdrive lockup is just a clutch built in the converter. You do not need to run it. It is an option. 1993 and up will have a round plug on the passenger side that is a computer controlled 4L60E transmission. You can call us and talk to a live person. Hi MadDog... I realize that your RU-vid video is 8 years old...are you still in business at the same Contact Number and Address ? I just bought an old 1982 Chevy G30 Hi Cube van 350 TH400 trans with 3.75 rear gear ratio... This thing runs fantastic but i'm getting 6.5 mpg. It has a 1406 Edelbrock carb but like I said it runs great.. I just ordered a new AVS2 1906 Edelbrock carb for it but I don't think that is going to help my mpg's a whole lot.
