Hey Lou, I like the advise you're giving in this video. I really think you need to address gear ratio and tire size though in relation to power band at cruising speeds for cars that will be driven at less then WOT. It's no good to put a "big" cam with a 3500 stall converter in a car that cruises at 2500 rpm at 65 mph.
I'm building a 62 Sunbeam with a 350 sbc, camel humps w/screw in studs, 3/4 Crane fireball cam, Team G intake, 10.5:1 compression, 650 duel feed double pumper, Scorpion roller rockers, T350 w/B&M shift kit. I've been looking at a TCI "Sizzler" 2600-2800 torque converter?
Great video Lou, I have a 06 Pontiac gto 6.0 I'm going with a Texas speed cam 228r 114 lsa. What would you suggest for a stall. The guy from TS suggested a 3600 yank. I thought that was too high. I was thinking 3200. I appreciate your input.
Got a stock cam ,heads, foxbody 5.0 carb .got new nos system 373 gears drag radials tires headers .and a new tci Aod streetfighter transmission what stall do you recommend?
The stall goes off of your Cam. If you know the power band or RPM range for your Cam, you don't want to go more than 200 above where it starts. For example, if the power band is 1600-5200 then the option for the best performance would be 1600-1800 stall. If you do not know your power band or RPM range then since it is stock you can just go with a stock stall. However, since you have NOS then you will need an anti-balloon plate or when you hit the NOS the power is going to blow apart your converter. Any other questions just give us a call. Hi Lou, I have an Pontiac 400 with Edelbrock 750, RPM inlet manifold and no clue, which changes have been done in the the past on the car. The car is since 20 years in Germany and went to various owner, it has been built up nice and seems to have quite good power, but with the TH400 and the current (I expect stock torque converter) it feels like the car starts moving, before the engine built up really torque. From my feeling, the engine should be about 1000 refs higher running before it give the full power to drivetrain. So a 2400 stall may help?
I have a rebuilt 302 foxbody with e303 cam gt40p heads cobra upper n lower intake & 410 gears... Pairing with a b&m trans with shift kit... I put my stall in wrong so I'm going with another one but what would be a match to go with setup... Thanks
The best way to pick a stall for your converter is to go off of what the Basic operating RPM range or basic operating power band range is. Usually it is listed on your Cam Card, but some companies you may have to call for that info. It is a range of numbers, for example 1600-5200 rpm or power band range. You want to stay within 200 of where it starts, so in the example case you would want to go with a 1600-1800 stall. The power comes in where it stalls at so if it starts at 1600 and you get a 2400-2600 stall you miss the range of power between 1600-2400 rpm. Also, the amount of HP you have comes into play with the converter because if you have more than 600HP, are running a Turbo, Super Charger or NOS then you will want to get at least an anti-ballooning plate and possibly a billet hub or dual or triple disk inside the converter. Hey Mad dog ! I'm building an 83 fiord Fairmont the Block is a 70-71 302. Dart World full race heads. 750 holly carb (not a dbl pumper). alum intake. roller rockers, shorty headers. 10:1 compression pistons. Tranny is a C4 auto with a manual reverse shift valve body 3 speed. Rear end is 8.8 with true posi. The stang I got all the stuff out of had a 4000 stall. it only has 500 miles on it. but obviously I ain't gonna use it. I have the brand new cam right here next to me ! I didn't get a cam card in the box but there is a tag on the outside with all the info on it ! for ex.. Cam lift=( INT. .320 EXH. .320) Valve lift= (INT. .512 EXH. .512) There is nothing about RPM range on this box tag ! What size stall is the best ! I want it streetable !
Hello davieboy1970, a 12 inch diameter 2400 stall converter will work excellent with your cam specs also very Street friendly. You can call us and talk to a live person. Up until 10 PM Eastern standard time , Monday through Sunday. Thank You, "Mad Dog" Lou Mad Dog Transmissions Phone 770-781-0949
Ok Yeah I called Summit Racing tech line also and gave them all my specs. and according to my Cam part # they said to use a 2500 stall ! Now the question I have is does it matter the diameter size ?? You said 12" the one that came with the car is a 4000 stall 10". what is the difference between a 10" 11" or a 12" ??
davieboy1970 Hello davieboy1970, the smaller the converter, the hotter, it runs. We can build a 12 inch diameter converter up to as high as 2800 stall. If you drive your car every day That would be the way to go. You can call us and talk to a live person. Up until 10 PM Eastern standard time , Monday through Sunday. Thank You, "Mad Dog" Lou Mad Dog Transmissions Phone 770-781-0949
It's not really gonna be driven "every day" Kinda more or less to take it to car shows, cruise on nice days, Show off to all my friends. I want it to have good power and torque but yet be able to cruise the roads without it being to hard with a big converter. I suppose a 2500 to a 2800 sounds about right !! Thanks ! I'll call that number and see what it would cost me to have one built !
davieboy1970 Instead of playing the guessing game... why don't people just do a dyno run and then you'll know for certain where its producing adequate torque/power to get the car moving fast off the line!.
Hay mad dog just seen your video on stall speed i am building a 05 ford ranger for my son i have a 05 crown vic stock with about 55000 miles i was wanting to put a holeshot stall thinking it would his take off the moter and trans out of the vic are stock with a chip and dual exaust what would you recomend i plan on putting a mid level shift kit also thanks for the video and any advise you may have
Lou how vital is the condition of a separator plate on the 4L60 ? I was installing the pinless valve kit and noticed alot of wear on the separator plate where the spring is located...Are they a replaceable item or need to be ? Thanks .
How much does a Level 4 700R4/4L60 weigh? (trying to work out shipping) How much torque can it handle? Have you ever shipped to Australia (do you have a customer reference for there) Is a trans brake a one way ticket to snap city on one of these? Thanks
I have a 03 ram 1500 with 5.9L engine factory and a 46Re transmission, what Stall speed should I use?? and is their a transmission rebuild kit out there that would give my transmission more performance?

This is my first big cam build. I have a 355 sbc 288 480 cam 106 110 center line. I have a 2 to 2200 stall the card shows 2 to 5000??? Is this not enough stall cause when I pull it into any gear it wants to jump but still idles. When I let off the brake it will to start pulling the car 1988 700r4 transmission
If your Cam card says that the RPM Range or Power Band range is 2000-5000 then yes, the 2000-2200 stall is good to run. In order to utilize your full range of power you want to stay where the Power Band/ RPM Range starts.
@@jasonbeason4780 There are a couple different things that can be done. For example the plate can be drilled and different springs can be used. Mad Dog Transmissions 770-781-0949

Hey Lou, I have a 75 Corvette with original auto trans and rear end, I had the motor built to a 383 Stroker with around 425-450 HP, when I start the car I have to hold the brake to keep it from lunging forward, do you think this has anything to do with the converter being mechanically frozen or could it be something else?
Hi Michael, If your car is in gear and it lunges forward then the stall is to high. If it is in park and it does it then there is something wrong with the transmission. If you have any other questions just let us know. You could give us a call at 770-71-0949 if you want to discus it in more detail over the phone. Mad Dog Transmissions

I know this will sound expensive and time consuming but the best thing to do is to try different stalls within the estimated ball park numbers until you find what the car likes and what gives you that kick in the pants feeling you are looking for, often times the "best" stall based on formulas, books, charts, and numbers is not what guys think they want, just saying, you will buy two or three stall converters and pay two three times more but in the end you will go damn that is the shizzle
Mild camshafts usually were good with a 2200 to 2400 stall. If you still have engine vacuum this converter will work great. A shift kit is always good, Any other questions don't hesitate to call or e-mail us. maddoglou454@aol.com Thank You, "Mad Dog" Lou Mad Dog Transmissions Phone 770-781-0949 Fax 770-781-0969

Lou, when you had a shop on Florida, around August 2003, I was unfortunate enough to have purchased a "Performance transmission" from you. I moved to Pa shortly thereafter and my transmission went bad on the way up. My vehicle was towed the rest of the way home. The shop who rebuilt it showed me all the JUNK stock parts that you claim were upgraded to performance parts. There wasn't any Kevlar or alto parts installed, only stock Mexico junk. If I was in Florida and this had happened, believe me when I tell you we'd be meeting face to face. So yes, there is the evidence of my claim and you are the scumbag, scumbag.
uh, no, you are still the skumbag. you never purchased anything from me, and I have no affiliation with this biz. I searched performance transmissions and got here. I then saw your factless post. Proving your skumbaggery, you try to accuse me of selling you something. If we met face to face and you made absurd, lying claims about me, you'd get your head pulled out of your akk, slapped about a bit, then reinserted. Get your soul in order, skumbag. You accuse others falsely at the drop of a hat, and that is a major sin. You are dismissed.
mike force you are correct, I did not buy a transmission from you. I didn't realize that by replying, it automatically put you name instead of Lou. I fixed that mistake and put Lou's name. The owner of mad dog. But rest assured, he sells junk!!!
This is just basic nonsense!! The only real way to know what you need is to know MANY different things about your ride!!! Weight, trans type, gears, rear end ratio, tire size, engine power band, torque, horsepower, and of course, what's it's main purpose, etc.!!
