Adding another hot rod to the stable can be expensive. For a young driver it can be impossible to fund a performance car. Here, Wayne from Maddog Racing shows his son Joe how you can build a fun street/strip car by buying a good rolling chassis as a foundation, and then shopping carefully in the online classifieds.

Guess I should answer the question, too First hot rod: 71 Chevelle SS396 Burnt orange metallic, brown stripes Very stock. Only 2.73 gears. TH400 Ran 15.70s at Englishtown. Never should have sold it First stick car: I had a 59 VW Bug with semaphore signals, a canvas sunroof and Blaupunkt radio. But I only “drove” it in the backyard. Abandoned that project before getting my license. Shoulda kept that one, too

Dakota Bethune Thanks man! We grew up on Chevelles. And had plenty of friends with cars like you described. The Mustang rear suspension set up - just like the Chevelles - was a welcome sight to us. We’ll talk about heavier muscle cars, too. But remember, the basics of acceleration - weight transfer, traction, low parasitic drag - apply to all cars. Sumthin’ to be learned from every car you see here

First ride was a two year old 1984 Mustang GT 5.0 5spd. A rich kid had tried to use it up so dad bought him a new Porsche. Bought it cheap as it needed a new clutch. Fixed that, changed wires, plugs, etc, found the float levels way too low on the Holley, and she ran great. I still remember my first street race. The new Z-28 lost 3 times in a row. My old man was in the passenger seat and I think he was more excited than I was. If my younger brother had not rolled it while I was away at college I probably would still have it.

My first "sports" style car was a little 90's Saturn which had almost no aftermarket and it was fun jerry rigging things to work and also felt good to drive sometime different and was usually underestimated cause most kids had hopped up civics. I bought my first stick car without ever haven driven stick and taught myself on the way home lol I finally got a 90 Mustang GT 5spd a few years later and still have it to this day, it had a NA 347 and is a fun street car.

Ran it into the ground delivering pizzas. Also learned how to lose my license in this car- lol. Was dark green with black interior. Factory slotted mags. Put a Crower “Beast” camshaft in it. First car back in 84 was a 78 mustang II ghia with 4 cylinder and a 4 speed, 85 was a 82 LX again with a 2.3 and a 4 speed, in 87(graduation time) 85 GT 4 speed. 89 added a 84 capri RS and a 86 capri 5.0 efi 5 speed (this is what I'm going to start looking for again) and so it went from there into late model stangs for daily drivers. In 2003 I picked up a 79 notch with 75k mi original owner Colorado car and a doner 1/4 mi car. Built my first engine from bare block to running low 12's. Had to sell it due to hard times, but now things are great again and I miss all the fun I've had crusing. @@stickmansgarage9452 I was most impressed by a little Datsun I owned because it had dual valve springs and wedge combustion chamber. I got it cheap when my friend botched a timing chain job. He got the tensioner wrong. One of my best cop stories happened in that car. I was coming home from my gas station job on a sunday am after pulling an all nighter. I floored it on a extremely long vacant section of hwy. About as I need to turn there are flashing lights behind me. I pause and stop a little past the entrance to the next hwy so we won't get hit by any one else. The cop gets out, huffing and puffing, this old guy with grey hair says "I had it floored and I didn't think I was going to catch you." he said as he stared hard at the little blue hood. (I kept it floored and I know I hit over 100mph. That car was so smooth there because of the rock solid rack n pinion steering.) Apparently I passed him at a bridge embankment doing 79mph. One more mph and I would have had to show up in court. But these days I have to admit I have not burned a gallon of gas in over 15 years. I live right in the very populated heart of the Twin Cities, MN and I drive a self-customized hauling radrover Ebike. I even put 536 studs on it for winter and drive it all winter long. Not only that but because I skip through a few lights I get places faster than people in cars or taxis do. I have a fleet of bikes. Been thinking about getting somewhere south for the winter so I am on the hunt to buy a car. Winters are brutal here and I had a botched TOS operation where the 1st rib was removed and left my left hand pretty useless and in a lot of bad bad nerve pain. So the weather is really hard on me. The medication is awful, too. I still like wrenching on things, though, and I still have my air tools. I'm doing a bottom bracket on a unique Y shaped Chrome Alloy MTB right now. I put chopper handlebars on it. It's full suspension so it's both very light and comfortable to ride. I do miss wrenching on cars and I'm sure any car I pick up around here is going to need something.
