Space Bro This is like 70s or 80s is leaning over to talk into the microphone that’s affixed to the floor in front of Dolly Parton. This is a family man I can tell LOL
Porter Wagoner. A close personal friend who made her career. I Will Always Love You was actually written because she didn't know how to tell him that she was leaving the show to pursue a solo career, so she expressed it through song.
Adino1 I was rather suprised that Jolene was actually a little girl she met that she found to be really beautiful and absolutely loved her name it makes me less mad when I hear this song 😂
Em Rich lmao what?! there’s nothing wrong with it being lip sync but this sounds like the exact copy of studio version. And considering the time period it was incredibly common for singers to lip sync in situations like this. You can understand your voice all you want but no one sounds like the studio version exactly when singing their song live. At least not perfectly.
adrienne leigh you can tell it’s not lip syncing because she has a little wobble at the end when singing jolene, nonetheless she still sounds amazing and there is nothing wrong with artists lip syncing, especially on songs they made themselves.
Shes using reverse psychology because she fell for Jolene but still loves her husband and cant stop thinking about walking in on them and joining the party
I believe at the time Porter (the host) and Dolly were a couple. I know she wrote "I Will Always Love You" for him. If I'm not mistaken, they were married for a while.
ben yeah it is! lol they thought she was 'too natural' and needed to add more to her appearance. i don't think she told them that she WAS dolly parton, lmao
@@thatonekid6677 That makes sense, because she never looks natural in her performances. Dolly Parton without 10 lbs of makeup and 2 hours of preparation must look like . . . a normal person.
Kitty Grimm Idk if you care but it’s fun to know that the ‘real’ Jolene was an bank teller who was particularly close to Dolly’s husband! And if said husband was out late, the couple would joke that he was with her. The name Jolene came from a little girl Dolly met who she thought was the most precious little thing. There’s no ‘real’ Jolene, and Dolly and her husband joked about the song after it was written :)!
Jolene isn’t the problem. The man is. EDIT: As some people think I’m talking about ALL MEN, I’m not... just the man in this song. It implies that he would leave his partner if Jolene wanted him, so he shouldn’t be with his partner at all. That’s all, applies to both men and women. 😂
Darby Lambert Emily is wrong, she is mixing these notes, although they are not high per say, she is putting so much power into them with relative ease. Much more than the average soprano could do or mezzo.
they clap at points during the song because something strikes them as particularly well done, either by Dolly or by one of the band members - it was normal at concerts to show appreciation and nobody told them to change for a tv show
I think it’s a way of showing their impressed and their way of showing gratitude also it’s way more polite than people screaming and interrupting/overpowering singers like we do now
I always get this sad and gloom feeling when she sings the line: "He talks about you in his sleep And there's nothing I can do to keep, From crying when he calls your name.. Jolene" Gets me everytime
I'd only heard the chorus until this video, and now I'm crying imagining this happening. Especially after seeing and understanding how kind and humble she is. 😿
Well I don’t know much, but thankfully from what I’ve heard, this was just a joke between her and her husband about a bank teller who used to flirt with him. And the name and physical appearance she got from some other people she’s met, or something. Idk much about it but I hope it’s true, because yes, it makes me wanna cry
Kindly, but I doubt if she ever 'owed' him anything. She's way ahead of the game .. in music, and in IQ. Seems she had trouble shooin' him away here though, while trying to remain polite ! Cute.
And during this time, we (women) referred to men like this as .. perhaps 'lounge lizards' is the kindest way to say it B-O-R-I-N-G. (All kinda creepy and all about themselves). Personally, I always steered clear. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours !
For the people who seem to misunderstand, or just don’t know. This song was based off of a woman at the bank who constantly flirted with Dolly’s husband. It was a joke between Dolly and her husband that he would go to the bank just to see her. Dolly also met a beautiful little girl by the name of jolene, that part of the song was written for the little girl. (You can look up interviews)
Nunnles You are a complete idiot. Watch the interviews you dunce. The song was written about the bank teller. The name Jolene came from a little girl who wanted Dolly to sign her autograph, and she signed it to “Jolene”, the little girl had a very unique name and Dolly told her that. The little girl also has beautiful red hair and green eyes. The cheating is about the bank teller, but the beauty she had came from that little girl Dolly remembered. Nobody was singing about a “little girl fucking their husband” you freak.
Thank you Dolly Parton for not only your beautiful voice, but also for generous donation to further covid19 vaccine research. So grateful I am walking this planet with you at the same time.
This was one of those songs a normal women would be to ashamed to admit ... but she was confident enough in her self to admit a woman was better looking and could have her man... very unusual song but brilliant
It really does mock the woman who represents jolene. This is after the fact,so jolene is nothing. I would not wamt to admit that i was the red head. Now the girl whose name she used, yup claim that if i were her. Whose going public and saying i an the ho.
well i think he might be trying to talk into the mic, but he might have one on him.. they have to have another mic tho it is kinda weird how close hes standing to her
I wonder if Dolly knew how popular this song would become back then. This song has earned it's place that's for sure, and Dolly is a gifted song writer.
Jolene was a bank clerk who was flirting with her husband (they've been married 50+ years now), the name Jolene came from a fan who asked her for an autograph. (Just looked this up)
There's probably been other comments on this, but... is it just me or is Porter Wagoner's intro awkward and somewhat creepy? The song is excellent, so this is not a knock on Dolly.
jack flash, you're right, I hadn't noticed that. That is almost certainly why he leans in like that. The director should have put him on a handheld mike... or maybe Porter just likes leaning into Dolly like that.
Bob Kovacs yes i thought so too. At this time they were partners and she was trying to go off on her own in singing and it angered him very much hence the pissed off look and creepy intro..
She was twice as beautiful 20 years later. Also, apparently in 1973, people had no concept of personal space. I hope that presented brushed his teeth that morning.
In an interview Dolly said that the name "Jolene" was based on a small little girl who went on the stage to take her autograph in her early days! Jolene was very beautiful and Dolly told her she would write a song about her and if she ever heard about it she would know it was about her! (Sorry if there were any spelling errors, I try my best)
i just saw a video right before this one and before she sang, she said jolene was a red head that worked at the bank and tried to "take care of" her husband when she was out on the road
+TAYA That's her stage story...she tells it because it sounds more fun to tell about a ''hussy'' trying to take her man, then beating her with her wig - LMFAO - but the story and the song is just something she made up that went well with the lyrics of the song. Like anyone could take her man from her...~laughs
Actually, now that I go through it again, it turns out, both versions are right! Dolly wrote this song, based on that little girl Jolene with red hair, and the red hair bank employee, who would flirt with her husband!
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene I'm begging of you please don't take my man Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene Please don't take him just because you can Your beauty is beyond compare With flaming locks of auburn hair With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green Your smile is like a breath of spring Your voice is soft like summer rain And I cannot compete with you, Jolene He talks about you in his sleep There's nothing I can do to keep From crying when he calls your name, Jolene And I can easily understand How you could easily take my man But you don't know what he means to me, Jolene Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene I'm begging of you please don't take my man Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene Please don't take him just because you can You could have your choice of men But I could never love again He's the only one for me, Jolene I had to have this talk with you My happiness depends on you And whatever you decide to do, Jolene Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene I'm begging of you please don't take my man Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene Please don't take him even though you can Jolene, Jolene
Dolly is the master and Queen of Country. Not only rich but so talented. Saw her live in LA in the late eighties. She came out in a wild dress and very Sexy. She sang a few songs then greeted the audience with a Big "Howdy" in her Tennessean accent. The crowd went wild. She is some kind of Woman. And so talented also, coming from poverty and one of 12 children and now loved by all, and being so rich at over 600 million. Sing on Dolly. We all do not get tired one minute of hearing your songs and seeing you heart with the help you have provided so many everywhere in the world.
Steve Wildes You should meet her. She took my third grade class to her park, got them all winter coats, and held most of them in her lap. She's a wonderful person, and a talented musician.
Elaine S I would love to meet her one day. She comes across in her music & interviews as a warm, honest person with a joy for life that's quite infectious.
Steve Wildes This is true. She would love to meet you as well. Some people are talented, some are genuine, and some have something relevant to say. I believe she has it all. Top it off with experience and an ability to write songs, well, maybe--just maybe--you would get someone as wonderful as Dolly. Maybe.
Fun fact: Jolene was the name of a young fan who approached Dolly Parton. Dolly asked: “what is your name sweetheart?” To which she replied “Jolene” Dolly’s response was “Jolene. I like that name.” And so she used it for the song.
I never ever liked country music, but there is something about Dolly Parton's music that I like. Pasty Cline, Anne Murray, and Johnny Cash are three more examples.
