The only hero of the story and she's already become a forgotten hero; The nurse who stayed by the man's side. The motive was for the man to be the hero who saved the rich man and thereby earn a lot of reward money. His defense was that the authorities were TOO SLOW in rescue of the whole lot of every one. Monaco wishes never to allow any embarrassment to come to their authorities. But they never experience violence and didn't know what to do. The cop's only witness to violence being 20 years prior due to a champagne bottle broken over some one's head. Monaco, the sunny place for shady people.

So, let me get this straight - the nurse sets a fire to alert the police and get help. This, after he has already given up his cell phone, a phone that he could have used to CALL police and ambulance. THEN, he stumbles down the stairs to the concierge to tell him he's hurt, another means by which he could have used to call police and ambulance without having to start a fire. He kills two people in his hairbrained method of alerting help after giving up one means of getting help, and before going downstairs to alert the concierge, another method of calling for help. And anyone with a brain in his head knows that you don't even need to set a fire to set off a smoke alarm. All you need to do is hold a candle up to the detector and that would be sufficient to set off the alarm. And this guy is intelligent enough to acquire a nursing degree? No, no, no - there is obviously something else going on here.
@jimreily7538
@jimreily7538 9 лет назад
Yeah I wondered about the fire alarm thing too. And, why were the bodyguards all away that day ? Did they ever explore that in the trial ? I wonder what Saffre's lawyer thinks of that. What do you personally think about Maher ? What is your impression of him ?
@robrobert9541
@robrobert9541 9 лет назад
***** That's the nurse that set the fire, isn't it? He's either a liar or a complete moron. All through the show I couldn't figure out what the motive was, though. I thought maybe he had been told there would be an inheritance for him and so he decided to do something to kill him and cooked up this crazy scheme to make it sound like a terrorist did it. But then at the end they said something about him just wanting to pull some stunt to make himself look the hero - some kind of Munchaussen Syndrome thing, or something. Either way, he's friggin' stupid.

+Rob Robert I think one guy figured that he thought that he'd get a reward for "saving" his wealthy employer-enough to retire on.
@juliejuliet5770
@juliejuliet5770 8 лет назад
+Jim Reilly Because he was a nurse/bodyguard. It was possibly for a quick moment that's why the other guard ran up to try and save his boss. Ted is a con man that wasn't happy making 600 a day back in the 90's which was big bucks which could be a little over 1.5-3k a day. Nowadays 2016 he was a greedy mf. His heroic plan fireback he probably wasn't trying to kill rather then put on a show or maybe he did intend too to win over The widows sympathy and $ . Retire and sail the world. Just like safra lawyer puts it he doesn't acknowledge anything nor himself its amusing.

I was enthralled with this story at the time it happened with Dominick Dunne's interesting reporting for Vanity Fair, which was a guilty pleasure. I have no doubt in my mind this man is a compulsive liar and murderer. It must have been agonizing for both wives so terribly hurt by his actions. To rub salt in the wretched wounds, he then repeatedly laments a very mild sentence in a cushy Monte Carlo jail - He's not even a marginally decent liar.

My question is if he had given the nurse the phone to phone the police and also informed the concierge why start a fire?? Sounds illogical. I think the 'wanna be hero' theory is accurate.

IF it had been proven at court, that it was possible for enemies to break into the apartment of a rich person and as a result, he ends up dead, because the police and fire department don't get their act together and get him out alive, -rich people would have fled Monaco and the financial loss would have been immeasurable. So there was a huge interest in getting this result....
@frelnc
@frelnc 10 лет назад
I don't think there's anything particularly difficult to figure out here. There is a mental illness called Munchausen's. Where people get off on "rescuing" others that they have willingly put in jeopardy. He stabbed himself (not fatally), started a fire to make the smoke alarms go off, and then let the fire burn until the smoke killed two people. As others have asked - 'What - no phones?'
@tracyfins

Why gave your hp to the lady nurse, and then set off a fire to alert the cops? Why are there no holes in Ted's sweater but he got hurt? Why no guards on duty at the time of the attack? What happened to the security system of the palace? What kind of defense would stop firefighters to stop fire and rescue trapped individuals?! And I have to say this, these filthy rice people knew they are so bad, that the moment someone got hurt, they think it's terrorism. I really don't care about the old billionaire...he had a good long life. The real heroine is the lady nurse that died while serving her duty as a caretaker.

Weird! The male nurse used a metal basket, the floors were marble, and walls cement... looks like he used a few pieces of paper that would snuff out after smoke alarm started alert and what happened to the sprinklers? Why didn't the female nurse tell authorities they may die of smoke inhalation if not rescued immediately! And why didn't authorities ask about gun men-terrorists? The female nurse would have cleared up the issue...too weird!

Nothing makes much sense in this episode, which kind of meandered, fizzling out. First, who the hell makes a fire to summon help? It doesn't make sense. A billionaire doesn't have an alarm system? And what about the bodyguards being off? And since when is the fire department prevented from extinguishing a fire, which should obviously be a priority. And the sentence itself was absurd. He should have received a life term for double homicide, regardless what his motive was. Then we're told the prison is more like a resort, but also that the guards tried to break him? I would have liked to have gone into the prison or at least heard what prison treatment was like.

What a story! One point that I didn't see covered in the program nor in the comments here: if Safra was so concerned about security that he hired former Mossad as bodyguards (leaving aside the glaring question of where they were that night!), why did he not have this guy closely vetted, observed and so on? I mean, regardless of his references as a NICU nurse, even interviewing the guy, you would see that he's weird. Someone on Safra's staff blew it big time. And not just one person. Again: where were those bodyguards that night? And did the nurse know there were no guards on duty? He is weak in the head regardless. Definitely one of the most bizarre stories ever.

Like that wise lawyer at the end said, everything is incredibly simple underneath the 'appearance' of 'things' - and everybody is 'caught by appearance' because appearance is all there is in the world. And it is because people are 'caught' by people's appearance that politicians, con men, frauds and charlatans like Ted Maher are successful. He's a very good con man - so good he thought he could fool everyone into believing he was a hero and make millions. He would have succeeded if the police in Monaco had not been so moronic and rescued those people they told to stay in the bathroom for over an hour. 'Stupid is as stupid does.' Forrest Gump His wife is doing the right thing by preventing him from contaminating his children.

I believe him for one reason, not because he's believable or Bc it makes sense or what have you, but for one reason, the fire took forever to catch, he made numerous attempts to have someone get them out of bathroom, they called numerous times of period of hours!!! It's not his fault regardless of whether he intentionally set it to get help or to kill someone, but had the responded properly no one would have died!! I do think it odd tho he set fire instead of calling for help but when ur in shock and scared sometimes you don't think clearly

When they mentioned Mossad security I thought to myself oops the Mossad/Israelis are at it again. A man of such wealth didn't work for it that is for sure. Probably caused the deaths of thousands of people, munitions, etc., There is not one person sitting in that court room who has not done at least a couple of dishonest deals. Rabbis in the court!. How hilarious with the Cross of Jesus behind them. They must have put their arms over their eyes in case he took his wrath out on them. I can understand him not being knowledgeable about the fire system but flesh wounds? They did not try to enter Mr. Soffia's bedroom? The police were certainly inept. Too scared to go in bcs there might be a terrorist. This terrorist mention is just that a mention. Blown completely out of proportion. With all these new depts HS, FEMA, etc., it is costing the US taxpayers a fortune. Trillions spent on a war that was totally unnecessary. Just another genocide of people that never harmed us, no WMD.

In a murder like this a smart person always asks the question. Who has the most to gain? I guess everyone forgot that, the Billionaire changed his will 2 weeks before his death, leaving most of his fortune to his wife & crossing his Brothers out. Who do you think gave the orders out for most of his security detail to not be there. She was in the same apt. but, did not check on her husband & gets out perfectly fine, come on! Here's one for you, the fire in the pale would not cause that kind of fire unless there was some kind of fuel used to feed it. Fires need 2 things to spread. 1) Oxygen, in a free standing metal pale with the apts. locked up for the night, it would have burned itself out. 2) Fuels, will spread a fire, amazing to me how that fire spread, after the American passed out at the conceirge & the wife got out The fact they were more in to finding intruders than saving lives, who do you think was calling those shots! The American was the perfect patsy. The only one foreigner in employ,, put the blame on ( smokescreen ) & no support in a French Country. To all of you who, believe in truth & justice carry the day, until you have been in court & you realize that shit doesn't matte,r when you are up against someone with money. You will look like your very soul has been plucked from you because everything you ever believed in is a lie.

Whilst it seems strange, I have heard before that Police have held back emergency workers if there is some possibility of violent intruders in a building. This guy caused the deaths for reasons only he knows and will probably make heaps of dollars from it eventually. Stabbed but no hole in the clothing, handing over a mobile phone that he happened to have with him whilst walking around the palace being confronted by intruders. Look at his face and body language when he speaks, he really is up himself saying look how good I am. A real smart arse if ever there was one. What about those people "betraying me", he was convicted and caused the death of 2 people and he wants the world to acclaim and help him.

His sister, Tammy Evans, still insisted that "... my brother is a hero". Well, IF your brother was a hero, then your brother is one fucking brain-dead "hero". First of all, as a nurse slash guard, your "hero" brother had the gull to claim that he set the fire on because he didnt even know how to work the security system. Even if that was the truth, hadnt your "hero" brother heard something called "a phone", and "call 911"? Who in their right mind would set the house on fair to get police help, instead just call 911? On top of that brain dead "daring rescue" your "hero" brother had performed, not only his wounds were superficial, ... guess what, the knife wounded him was found belonged to your "hero" brother himself! And as for you Tammy Evan, unless you are also fucking brain dead (well, since imbecile symptom runs in the family), then you're fucking hypocrite! Had to be one of these two possibilities. Admit IT, your brother is nothing but one sneaky slimy lowlife scum who would do anything to climb UP!
@Unloadonyou
@Unloadonyou 10 лет назад
911 isn't the universal emergency number. In the UK it is 999, in South Africa it is 10 111 for fire/ambulance 10 177 for police. In Sweden the emergency number is 112 and in Monaco it is 18 ambulance/fire and 17 for police. Many countries have different numbers. I can imagine myself having issues if I was vacationing in the Philippines and something happens and I cant get a hold of police because I didn't know their emergency number was 117. :)

Darude Sandstorm I think you have missed the part about him lying about the intruders, which means there was no emergency, no need to do anything (to call or to set the place on fire). He was setting up a fictitious situation so he could be the "hero" who saved the big boss's life, he was a scum asskisser who would do anything to move his way up! And, forget about the setting up trap. Let's say there was intruders, you dont think as a bodyguard of such a rich people, he would have had all the information at hand just in case? You dont think he could have contacted other bodyguard to coming in to rescue?
@Unloadonyou
@Unloadonyou 10 лет назад
Xiaomin L Feador While I agree he staged the whole thing, I was simply focusing on your part of the comment about dialing 911 which would not have worked. When he invented his scheme, he probably overlooked the detail about getting a hold of the police when he went to dial 911 lol. At that point, the only other way to get emergency services there was to set a fire and make the alarm system call police and fire. Things really went downhill for him because he couldn't rescue his boss due to the sever lack of experience on behalf of the emergency responders which went painfully slow.

I think that the point has been missed ... let me explain : after being stabbed he tells the duty nurse to hide with the patient in the bathroom and then instead of "telephoning" anyone to raise the alarm he sets a fire [because that's what private / public nurses are trained to do in this kind of emergency]. Then, he goes downstairs and tells the reception staff he's been "attacked" [ambiguous word in any language] and promptly collapses, assumingly unresponsive. The reception staff "assume" he's been shot and inform the police of the "shooting". The police then "assume" it is a terrorist attack ... and then willfully hold back on the thing that they are hired [paid handsomely] to provide ... because they are afraid of being shot too ............ [there can be no other reason than cowardice on doing what they did in this instance]. This is a comedy yes ?? It must be ... !!! Don't they know the truth about assumptions ??? He set a fire, it got out of hand / control because it was unattended [he went downstairs without extinguishing it even tho it had done it's job in setting off the fire/ smoke alarm and alert authority's] His fire caused the deaths of the other two, therefore he, and he alone, is guilty of causing their deaths, regardless of who actually stabbed him prior to him setting the fire, It would only be classed as "accidental" if he was actually stabbed by an assailant that was someone other than his own self or if the judge was corrupt. If it's true, that his top / jumper had no physical cuts, then the likelihood of him having stabbed himself [on purpose] is greatly increased, as your clothes don't fall up when you fall / are knocked down. I lean towards "guilty" because of the facts in this case .... regardless of what the ignorant think.

It is impossible to conclude that he did not do it. There were security cameras that had no images of the intruders. How can you be stabbed with your own knife through a thick wool sweater, and there are no holes in the sweater? How did such a great fire start in a metal trash container on a marble floor? This is cut and dry, but for drama and for a good long story, the author has to doubt clean evidence. Dominic, this is not your best work. Facts. Evidence.

It's really interesing that Ted Maher appeared like a Zombie in his first trial after being held for 2 years in that said to be luxury-hotel=prison, while most American defendant would have already put on some weight when comes to trial.

I have a "theory". I think he was addicted to drugs and was suffering withdrawal..Had he already served 2 yrs. before trial?....will go back and check that out.... He was and is mentally ill.

There's something seriously wrong with this dork. Who refers to themself in the third person? He and his sister act in a weird, melodramatic way - as if they exist in a bad Lifetime movie.

Undoubtedly Ted was guilty, but the Monaco's Fire Department was extremely negligent. I agree with Leopararouen. It could be a Munchausen's by proxy

While I was watching this I was thinking "Whatever prison this guy (Ted Bundy, er, Oops, 'Maher') is in, is quite ritzy, letting him wear a jacket and tie for his interview." Dominick Dunne always seemed to be a bit of a hypocrite. This just proves it. O.J. Simpson kills a man and a woman and he's 'the killer' and a 'beast'. This guy does the same and he's a 'very troubled soul'... Maher was "An innocent man being railroaded..." Simpson was 'obviously guilty' as soon as there was word that his ex-wife and Ron Goldman were found dead. I wonder if stabbing is a more vicious form of homicide in comparison to leaving two people to asphyxiate from smoke inhalation, or to (possibly) burn to death... Meanwhile, Dunne is slobbering over the widow, Lily Safra's, clothes and wealth. Unadulterated CRAP!

And the apple's killing of two people, a man and a woman, is more acceptable or excusable than the orange's killing of two people, both a man and a woman. "DD's analysis of this case was fair and balanced." Not BOTH cases, in your own words, just THIS case. Who's side _are_ you on?

I dont think the nurse is in prison, is he ? I thougt he was released, but why was he released, did he just serve his time and come back to the US. This was a weird episode to be sure. Also, seriously the Monaco prison serves two course meals ? How good is that ? I honestly would not mind doing time in Monaco. It sounds like one of those relaxation retreats.

I can't say anything was proven here. Why on earth would police stop first responders to stop the fire? This man wasn't given a fair trial in a foreign country BUT why did he start the fire in the first place.

If that nurse guy had a phone why didn't he call for help instead of setting a fire, and then that other nurse had the phone but waited for ages before phoning for help.

Why the hell did he need to start a fire to get police to come ... when all he had to do was step down several stairs & tell that guy at the desk "I've been attacked" That makes no sense.... it showed him starting the fire & then 3 seconds later, he casually is on the stairs telling a man to call police... um then why start the fire if it was that easy to have someone call police anyway ???? I think this guy's fucking nuts

The fire was not made as it shows here. I am sure he has had a much greater fire which could easily and soon come out of control. He, perhaps, got order from someone who wanted the victim killed. His story is just so childish and it is not strange that the judges and jurors didn't belive him.
