It's very similar to blue collar rural Canada and probably Russia in some ways (I'm guessing, since I haven't been to Russia). It's rugged mountain men and people in general who still have their heads on right. We weren't so glued to technology yet as the first Xbox was just coming out and back then parents were stricter about making sure kids weren't on it for too long (even an hour and they'd kick us out the door and we'd never be on it before our homework was done). I didn't have one, I just had a Gameboy advanced to play Pokémon on lol Truthfully there's so much variation in America and in places like Montana or West Virginia I can promise you everyone is still going outside every bit as much as previous generations. Being outside is just part of our culture. My mom was telling me stories about being a kid in West Virginia growing up where one of her neighbor's family lived in a broken down school bus for a house instead of an actual house. Another neighbor had a bathtub in their yard and that's where they bathed cause apparently they didn't have one in their home? Crazy stuff but some parts of the US are so rural that even today you wouldn't call them quite modern. The people who live in those spots are certainly survivors though and the Americans that do experience it are still tough as anyone else in the world who push through hardship
